I had many enjoyable memories when I was a child (eighty years ago), reading Aesops Fables and the story of Narcissus and Echo. All of Aesops fables have moral meaning (Example: [a] The Boy Who Cried Wolf tells you not to tell lies or else nobody will listen to you and [b] The Lion and the Mouse tells you that everyone needs help and the mouses kindness). In Narcissus and Echo, Narcissus saw his reflection in the pool and fell in love with his reflection. Echo fell in love with Narcissus. You may hear Echo if you go out in an open space and shout Hello, and she will answer you.

Book Trivialities About Me and Myself

Download or read book Trivialities About Me and Myself written by Yeng Pway Ngon and published by Epigram Books. This book was released on 2014 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by Asiaweek as one of the 10 Best Chinese Novels of 2006 Winner, Singapore Literature Prize for Chinese 2008 Selected by The Business Times as one of the Best Books of 2014 The Chinese protagonist of Cultural Medallion recipient Yeng Pway Ngon's novel, Trivialities about Me and Myself, is a journalist turned entrepreneur who possesses a split personality. “Me” is a figure consumed by greed and sexual desire, two impulses that undermine his careers, his two marriages, and his relationship with his son. Throughout the novel he engages in a dialogue with his other identity, the moralistic “Myself”, whose principled stances try but usually fail to win over his other half. The protagonist’s lifetime, from childhood to his dying days in a rest home, parallels the modern history of Singapore itself and its evolution from a colonised city to a consumer-oriented nation, one in which an English-language educational system and commercial interests suppress indigenous languages and traditions. While the meticulously described action takes place in the city, the real setting is within the psyche of the narrator, whose two halves are engaged in an epic struggle for dominance.

Book Son Daddy Has To Go

Download or read book Son Daddy Has To Go written by Momcilo (Michael) Pupavac and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-06-09 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When young Novak Jovanovic returns to Serbia to find his bride, he is full of optimism, hoping things will go well and that the three-week vacation will turn out as he imagined it might. He believes that a girl of his own nationality will share his values and honour the same customs as he does. He is sure that a relationship based on these common elements and on honesty will doubtless grow into a loving one. And it seems his choice agrees with him as she flings her arms around him and assures him that she will, indeed, marry him. After winning her parent’s approval, the happy couple plan their modest wedding, and afterward, they leave for a three-day honeymoon. Upon their return, Novak flies back to Canada, promising Lily that he will start the immigration process immediately. After Lily is in Canada, the young couple set out to make their life together. While times are tight, Novak understands that Lily is facing many adjustments, including a pregnancy with its hormonal changes and physical challenges. But, even so, he has occasional doubts about the strength of their relationship, and an internal alarm bell begins to sound. All too soon, it becomes apparent that Lily is not committed to the same family values and customs that Novak is. And over time, life for Novak becomes something of a nightmare. Son, Daddy Has to Go documents Novak’s misery as Lily exacts the pound of flesh that only she understands. The memoir reveals his forty-one years of sacrifice, disappointment, despair, and incomprehension over the seeming mess of his life. This memoir offers an in-depth look at the often-overlooked topic of male spousal abuse and its effect on one man’s life. And while it exposes the author’s frequent emotional upheaval, it also demonstrates the power of hope and faith in family and one’s own integrity. Novak stayed true to himself, and, out of the blue, beauty and joy and love emerged.

Book Re Storying Human Earth Relationships in Environmental Education

Download or read book Re Storying Human Earth Relationships in Environmental Education written by Kathryn Riley and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-21 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is situated in the simultaneous thinking (theory) and doing (action) of posthumanist performativity and new materialist methodologies to bring forth a multitude of stories that demonstrate co-constituted and co-implicated worldmaking practices. It is written in response to the fact that our Earth is at a critical juncture. As atmospheric temperatures rise and cast unprecedented and wide-spread social and ecological crises across the planet, social and ecological injustices and threats cannot be separated from globalising, neoliberal, capitalist, and colonial discourses that proliferate through anthropocentric and humancentric logics. Manifesting in binary classifications that position the human as separate from the Earth, and dominant categories of the human in hierarchies of power, such logics homogenise and institutionalise the field of environmental education and result in an over-emphasis on instrumentalist, technicist, and mechanistic teaching and learning practices. Exploring the affects emerging within, and between, an assemblage comprising Researcher/Teacher/Environmental Education Worldings, this book seeks to understand how the researcher makes sense of herself with/in the broader ecologies of the world; collaborative processes with an elementary-school teacher in Saskatchewan, Canada, as actualised through four co-created and co-implemented multisensory researcher/teacher enactments (Mindful Walking, Mapping Worlds, Eco-art Installation, and Photographic Encounters); and how the researcher/teacher organises themselves with Land-based pedagogies, environmental education curriculum policy, and wider discourses of Western education. This book does not propose a better way of teaching and learning in environmental education. Rather, showing how difference between categories is relationally bound, this book offers a conceptual (re)storying of human/Earth relationships in environmental education for social and ecological justice in these times of the Anthropocene.
