Book excerpt: "I can see them in his eyes, underneath it all... His demons calling for mine." I wanted to give in to the hunger... Niklas Bergman stalked in the shadows of the silent woods, a depraved hunter... and I am his prey. I traded one captor that broke my body and soul, for one that threatens to break not only my heart, but the walls that contain the darkness that lives inside of me. He is a beautiful monster, everything I searched for before my capture, the only one that understands my secrets and I fear my heart and mind will not survive him. I am a monster, I am a monster... I was a monster... Suki Knoxx hides a legacy of blood and I will drown her in it myself if that's what she needs to embrace it. I wanted to use her - no limits, consequences or remorse - but when I set my eyes on her, broken and abused, her enemy became mine. Now I can't let her go, not until I break her open. Her darkness calls to mine, her demons dance on heathen songs sung by my own and sometimes... prey wants to be prey. Souls break open. Limits are crossed. Secrets are unleashed. A monster is born. Content Warning This book contains material that is suitable for ages 18+, with dark themes that may be triggering to some, including dub-con. Its golden rays straggled into the aisles of the wood as into some noble hall. I was impressed as if some ancient and altogether admirable and shining family had settled there in that part of the land called Concord, unknown to me,-to whom the sun was servant,-who had not gone into society in the village,-who had not been called on. I saw their park, their pleasure-ground, beyond through the wood, in Spaulding's cranberry-meadow. The pines furnished them with gables as they grew. Their house was not obvious to vision; their trees grew through it. I do not know whether I heard the sounds of a suppressed hilarity or not. They seemed to recline on the sunbeams. They have sons and daughters. They are quite well. The farmer's cart-path, which leads directly through their hall, does not in the least put them out,-as the muddy bottom of a pool is sometimes seen through the reflected skies. They never heard of Spaulding, and do not know that he is their neighbor,-notwithstanding I heard him whistle as he drove his team through the house. Nothing can equal the serenity of their lives.

Book excerpt: Lilith, first published in 1895, tells the story of Mr. Vane, the owner of a library that seems to be haunted by a raven-the ghost of the library's former owner. Mr. Vane eventually follows this strange figure through a mirror and into another world, the "region of seven dimensions." There Vane meets a number of characters, including Biblical characters like Adam and his first wife Lilith. Thus begins a battle of good versus evil that reverberates through dimensions. The narrative is heavy with Christian allegory, and MacDonald uses the world to expound on his Christian universalist philosophy while telling a story of life, death, and ultimately salvation. Critics consider Lilith to be one of MacDonald's darker works, but opinion on it is divided. Despite this, some critics praise it for its rich imagery, with scholar Neil Barron claiming that the novel is the "obvious parent of David Lindsay's A Voyage to Arcturus," itself a highly influential work of fantasy.

Book excerpt: Lilith is a fantasy novel written by Scottish writer George MacDonald and first published in 1895. Its importance was recognized in its later revival in paperback by Ballantine Books as the fifth volume of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in September 1969. Lilith is considered among the darkest of MacDonald's works, and among the most profound. It is a story concerning the nature of life, death, and salvation. In the story, MacDonald mentions a cosmic sleep that heals tortured souls, preceding the salvation of all. MacDonald was a Christian universalist, believing that all will eventually be saved. However, in this story, divine punishment is not taken lightly, and salvation is hard-won.

Book excerpt: Nothing more happened for some days. I think it was about a week after, when what I have nowto tell took place.I had often thought of the manuscript fragment, and repeatedly tried to discover some way ofreleasing it, but in vain: I could not find out what held it fast. But I had for some time intended a thorough overhauling of the books in the closet, itsatmosphere causing me uneasiness as to their condition. One day the intention suddenly became aresolve, and I was in the act of rising from my chair to make a beginning, when I saw the oldlibrarian moving from the door of the closet toward the farther end of the room. I ought rather tosay only that I caught sight of something shadowy from which I received the impression of a slight, stooping man, in a shabby dress-coat reaching almost to his heels, the tails of which, disparting alittle as he walked, revealed thin legs in black stockings, and large feet in wide, slipper-like shoes. At once I followed him: I might be following a shadow, but I never doubted I was followingsomething. He went out of the library into the hall, and across to the foot of the great staircase, thenup the stairs to the first floor, where lay the chief rooms. Past these rooms, I following close, hecontinued his way, through a wide corridor, to the foot of a narrower stair leading to the secondfloor. Up that he went also, and when I reached the top, strange as it may seem, I found myself in aregion almost unknown to me. I never had brother or sister to incite to such romps as makechildren familiar with nook and cranny; I was a mere child when my guardian took me away; and Ihad never seen the house again until, about a month before, I returned to take possession.Through passage after passage we came to a door at the bottom of a winding wooden stair, whichwe ascended. Every step creaked under my foot, but I heard no sound from that of my guide.Somewhere in the middle of the stair I lost sight of him, and from the top of it the shadowy shapewas nowhere visible. I could not even imagine I saw him. The place was full of shadows, but he wasnot one of them.I was in the main garret, with huge beams and rafters over my head, great spaces around me, adoor here and there in sight, and long vistas whose gloom was thinned by a few lurking cobwebbedwindows and small dusky skylights. I gazed with a strange mingling of awe and pleasure: the wideexpanse of garret was my own, and unexplored

Book excerpt: The final version of Lilith: A Romance, published in 1895, was the result of George MacDonald's extensive revision of a draft written in 1890 that was one-third as long and less elaborate in symbolism. The novel concerns the adventures of Mr. Vane, who has returned home from studying the physical sciences at Oxford to manage the family estate he has inherited. One day he follows a ghost-librarian, named Mr. Raven (who at times actually takes on the form of a raven), into a parallel world where he must wander, after having rejected Mr. and Mrs. Raven's invitation to join the countless people sleeping off the effects of earthly suffering in their vault. Mr. Vane is soon forced into bondage by some loutish Bad Giants but is kept company by the guileless Little Ones, who have never grown up because in this desiccated world there is no water for them to cry tears. Lona, the oldest of the Little Ones, informs him that they turn into Bad Giants if they become greedy.

Book excerpt: Lilith is a fantasy novel written by Scottish writer George MacDonald and first published in 1895. Its importance was recognized in its later revival in paperback by Ballantine Books as the fifth volume of the celebrated Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in September 1969. Lilith is considered among the darkest of MacDonald's works, and among the most profound. It is a story concerning the nature of life, death and salvation. Many believe MacDonald is arguing for Christian universalism, or the idea that all will eventually be saved. Mr. Vane, the protagonist of Lilith, owns a library that seems to be haunted by the former librarian, who looks much like a raven from the brief glimpses he catches of the wraith. After finally encountering the supposed ghost, the mysterious Mr. Raven, Vane learns that Raven had known his father; indeed, Vane's father had visited the strange parallel universe from which Raven comes and goes and now resides therein. Vane follows Raven into the world through a mirror (this symbolistic realm is described as "the region of the seven dimensions," a term taken from Jacob Boehme). Book excerpt: I had just finished my studies at Oxford, and was taking a brief holiday from work before assuming definitely the management of the estate. My father died when I was yet a child; my mother followed him within a year; and I was nearly as much alone in the world as a man might find himself. I had made little acquaintance with the history of my ancestors. Almost the only thing I knew concerning them was, that a notable number of them had been given to study. I had myself so far inherited the tendency as to devote a good deal of my time, though, I confess, after a somewhat desultory fashion, to the physical sciences. It was chiefly the wonder they woke that drew me. I was constantly seeing, and on the outlook to see, strange analogies, not only between the facts of different sciences of the same order, or between physical and metaphysical facts, but between physical hypotheses and suggestions glimmering out of the metaphysical dreams into which I was in the habit of falling. I was at the same time much given to a premature indulgence of the impulse to turn hypothesis into theory. Of my mental peculiarities there is no occasion to say more. The house as well as the family was of some antiquity, but no description of it is necessary to the understanding of my narrative. It contained a fine library, whose growth began before the invention of printing, and had continued to my own time, greatly influenced, of course, by changes of taste and pursuit. Nothing surely can more impress upon a man the transitory nature of possession than his succeeding to an ancient property! Like a moving panorama mine has passed from before many eyes, and is now slowly flitting from before my own.

Its chief room was large, and the walls of it were covered with booksalmost to the ceiling; the rooms into which it overflowed were of various sizes and shapes, andcommunicated in modes as various-by doors, by open arches, by short passages, by steps up andsteps down.
