Book Like Letters in Running Water

Download or read book Like Letters in Running Water written by Mary Aswell Doll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2000-07-01 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Letters in Running Water explores ways in which fiction (prose, drama, poetry, myth, fairytale) yields transformative insights for educational theory and practice. Through a series of intensely original, powerful essays drawing on curriculum theory, literary analysis, psychology, and feminist theory and practice, Doll seeks to confront a commonly held bias that reading literary fictions is "mere" entertainment (not a learning experience). She suggests that fiction has immense teaching power because it connects readers with their alliances within themselves and this connection attends to social, outer issues addressed by traditional pedagogies with greater, deeper awareness. Her elaboration in this book of the concept of currere--the lived experience of curriculum--through literature, drama, and myth is a major contribution to the field of curriculum theory.

Book God Faith and Reason

Download or read book God Faith and Reason written by Michael Savage and published by Center Street. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, Michael Savage has been preaching his political faith of borders, language and culture to millions on his nationally-syndicated radio show, The Savage Nation. Now, Savage gives his audience a look into his religious faith and his ideas about the Judeo-Christian foundation of the American culture he has fought all his life to preserve. But rather than a dry, theological treatise, Savage provides something more akin to an ancient mystery text. Drawing on Christian, Jewish, Buddhist and other spiritual sources, as well as autobiographical material and highlights from his radio show, Savage shares a series of glimpses of God he has experienced over the whole of his life, before and after his groundbreaking radio career. Moving childhood stories, his dinner with an atheist and a Buddhist, an interview with a Jewish gangster and Savage's reflections on selected passages from ancient scriptures are just a few of the eclectic group of experiences and insights Savage shares in what is easily the most unique book on spirituality in decades. From his days as a boy growing up in New York City to many years searching for healing plants in the South Seas to his current incarnation as one of the most popular talk radio hosts in the world, Savage has been haunted by glimpses of the divine and struggled to find their meaning. Rather than trite, orthodox answers, GOD, FAITH, AND REASON presents the reader with one man's perceptions and consideration of the daily presence of God in the world around us and how the search to find God is the finding itself.

Book Bad Environmentalism

Download or read book Bad Environmentalism written by Nicole Seymour and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces a tradition of ironic and irreverent environmentalism, asking us to rethink the movement’s reputation for gloom and doom Activists today strive to educate the public about climate change, but sociologists have found that the more we know about alarming issues, the less likely we are to act. Meanwhile, environmentalists have acquired a reputation as gloom-and-doom killjoys. Bad Environmentalism identifies contemporary texts that respond to these absurdities and ironies through absurdity and irony—as well as camp, frivolity, irreverence, perversity, and playfulness. Nicole Seymour develops the concept of “bad environmentalism”: cultural thought that employs dissident affects and sensibilities to reflect critically on our current moment and on mainstream environmental activism. From the television show Wildboyz to the short film series Green Porno, Seymour shows that this tradition of thought is widespread—spanning animation, documentary, fiction film, performance art, poetry, prose fiction, social media, and stand-up comedy since at least 1975. Seymour argues that these texts reject self-righteousness and sentimentality, undercutting public negativity toward activism and questioning basic environmentalist assumptions: that love and reverence are required for ethical relationships with the nonhuman and that knowledge is key to addressing problems like climate change. Funny and original, Bad Environmentalism champions the practice of alternative green politics. From drag performance to Indigenous comedy, Seymour expands our understanding of how environmental art and activism can be pleasurable, even in a time of undeniable crisis.

Book Letters from Korea

Download or read book Letters from Korea written by Julia Irvine and published by Strategic Book Publishing Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lost art of letter writing comes alive in a soldier's letters from the front, in Letters from Korea, an historical bit of Americana from the year 1953, when the United States was fighting in the Korean War. These letters were written to the author's mother, Elsie Jones Irvine, while her father, James Preston Irvine, was stationed in Korea during the war. They are not only love letters, but are a chronicle of the time, providing an intriguing slice of history of what was happening during that era in both countries. Julia Irvine came across the letters in an old footlocker in 2005, fifty-two years after they were written. Retired teacher Julia Irvine grew up an Army brat. She now lives in Columbus, Georgia. This is her first book, which was inspired by "finding the letters my father wrote to my mother." Publisher's website: http: //sbprabooks.com/JuliaIrvine
