Book How to Produce Methanol from Coal

Download or read book How to Produce Methanol from Coal written by Emil Supp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to efforts and legislative action - initiated above all by the government of the United States - to use cleaner fuels and thus make a contribution towards a better environment, public attention is back again on using methanol in carbu rettor and diesel engines. Most prominent among the raw materials from which methanol can be produced is coal, whose deposits and resources are many times larger than those of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons. This book deals with the production of methanol from coal. It describes both the individual steps that are required for this process and the essential ancillary units and offsites associated with the process itself . . It is not meant to inform the reader about the intricate details of the processes, which can much better be taken from the specialized literature that deals exclusively and in detail with them or from the well-known standard engineering books. Rather, this book is to give the reader an impression how manifold a field this is, how many process variations and combinations the designer of such plants has to consider in order to arrive at an optimum design in each particular case. Apart from the production of chemical-grade methanol, the book deals briefly also with fuel methanol production, i. e. with the production of alcohol mixes. One of the many possible routes from coal to methanol is illustrated by a process flow diagram, and a material and energy balance is compiled for this typical example.

Book Lignite to methanol an Engineering Evaluation of Winkler Gasification and ICI Methanol Synthesis Route

Download or read book Lignite to methanol an Engineering Evaluation of Winkler Gasification and ICI Methanol Synthesis Route written by S. Goyen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report was prepared by DM International (formerly Davy PowergasInc.) Houston, Texas. It summarizes the results of a study, conductedfor the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to provide a conceptual design and an engineering evaluation of an integrated plant, incorporating Winkler Gasification Technology and ICI Methanol synthesis for the production of fuel grade methanol from North Dakota lignite. The proposed processing scheme, while using only proven technologies that are commerically available, is relatively low in capital requirements and still provides a reasonably energy efficient grass roots plant. This volume of the report presents the results of this effort cleared of confidential information.

Book Synthetic Fuels

Download or read book Synthetic Fuels written by Ronald F. Probstein and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the outgrowth of a graduate course the authors taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was designed to fill an urgent need—the training of engineers in the production of synthetic fuels to replace dwindling supplies of natural ones. The authors presented synthetic fuels as a unified engineering subject, while recognizing that many of its principles are well-understood aspects of various engineering fields. The presentation begins with a review of chemical and physical fundamentals and conversion fundamentals, and proceeds to coal gasification and gas upgrading. Subsequent chapters examine liquids and clean solids produced from coal, liquids obtained from oil shale and tar sands, biomass conversion, and environmental, economic, and related aspects of synthetic fuel use. The text is directed toward beginning graduate students and advanced undergraduates in chemical and mechanical engineering, but should also appeal to students from other disciplines, including environmental, mining, petroleum, and industrial engineering, as well as chemistry. It also serves as a reference and guide for professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely revised and updated, the third edition of this bestseller discusses the concept and ongoing development of using methanol and derived dimethyl ether as a transportation fuel, energy storage medium, and as a chemical raw material to replace fossil fuels. The contents have been expanded by 35% with new and up to date coverage on energy storage, methanol from biomass and waste products, as well as on carbon dioxide capture and recycling. Written by the late Nobel laureate George Olah, Alain Goeppert and G. K. Surya Prakash, this is an inspiring read for anyone concerned with the major challenge posed by environmental problems including global warming and ocean acidification due to massive increase in fossil fuel use. The book provides a comprehensive and sustainable solution to replace fossil fuels in the long run by chemical recycling of carbon dioxide through renewable methanol utilizing alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and nuclear. The Methanol Economy is being progressively implemented in many parts of the world.
