Book excerpt: L'incendie est un phénomène complexe, le développement d'un modèle feu permettant à la fois une étude physico-chimique et toxicologique, offre la possibilité d'aborder l'évaluation du risque lié à la décomposition thermique des matériaux, des végétaux et des produits chimiques. Au cours de ce travail, nous avons essayé dans un premier temps d'élargir l'utilisation du modèle feu, qui répond généralement à des conditions rencontrées dans le bâtiment, à l'évaluation de la toxicité des effluents issus de la dégradation thermique des végétaux impliqués dans les incendies de forêt, puis dans un deuxième temps, nous avons élaboré une méthode d'étude de la toxicité, en cas d'incendie, des produits chimiques utilisés comme retardants du feu. Pour évaluer le risque toxique engendré par la décomposition thermique des végétaux et des retardants, deux bioessais ont été utilisés :inhalation des fumées par des souris et inhibition de la croissance de la microalgue Selenastrum capricornutum. En ce qui concerne les végétaux, cette étude a permis de les comparer et de les classer entre eux selon leurs risques toxiques potentiels. Les végétaux secs présentent un risque (incendie et toxique) plus important que les végétaux frais.Les essais effectués sur certains produits chimiques utilisés comme retardants ont montré la fiabilité du modèle feu pour une telle étude. L'ignifugation par ces produits semble avoir un effet plus important sur le risque incendie que sur le risque toxique, même si ce dernier se trouve lui-aussi légèrement diminué.
