Book Island of the Blue Dolphins

Download or read book Island of the Blue Dolphins written by Scott O'Dell and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 1960 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far off the coast of California looms a harsh rock known as the island of San Nicholas. Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches. Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply. More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

Book The Library Screen Scene

Download or read book The Library Screen Scene written by Renee Hobbs and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades, several U.S. states have explored ways to mainstream media literacy in school curriculum. However one of the best and most accessible places to learn this necessary skill has not been the traditional classroom but rather the library. In an increasing number of school, public, and academic libraries, shared media experiences such as film screening, learning to computer animate, and video editing promote community and a sense of civic engagement. The Library Screen Scene reveals five core practices used by librarians who work with film and media: viewing, creating, learning, collecting, and connecting. With examples from more than 170 libraries throughout the United States, the book shows how film and media literacy education programs, library services, and media collections teach patrons to critically analyze moving image media, uniting generations, cultures, and communities in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seleukid empire, the principal successor-state of the empire of Alexander the Great, endured for over 200 years and stretched, at its peak, from the Mediterranean to the borders of India. This book provides a wide-ranging study of the empire's economy and the methods used by the Seleukid kings to monetise and manage it so as to extract tribute, rent and taxes as efficiently as possible. It uses a variety of Greek literary sources and inscriptions, cuneiform texts, archaeological, numismatic and comparative evidence to explore in detail the manner of exploitation of their lands and subjects by the Seleukid kings, their city-building activity, the financing of their armies and administration, the use they made of coinage and their methods of financial management. The book adopts a highly original, numerical approach throughout, which leads to a quantified model of the economy of an ancient state.

Book The On track Indicator as a Predictor of High School Graduation

Download or read book The On track Indicator as a Predictor of High School Graduation written by Elaine Marie Allensworth and published by . This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Year Of High School Is A Critical Transition Period For Students, Those Who Succeed In Their First Year Are More Likely To Continue To Do well in The Following Years And Eventually Graduate. Because A Successful Transition Into High School Is So Important, In 1999 The Consortion Developed An Indicator To Gauge Whether Students Make Sufficient Progress In Their Freshman Year Of High School To Be On-Track To Graduate Within Four Years. The Evidence Presented Here Suggests That the On-Track Indicator Can Be A Valuable Tool For Parents, Schools, And The School System As They Work To Improve Students Likelihood Of Graduating.

Book What Matters for Staying On Track and Graduating in Chicago Public High Schools

Download or read book What Matters for Staying On Track and Graduating in Chicago Public High Schools written by Elaine Allensworth and published by . This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost half of all Chicago Public School students fail to graduate, and in some CPS high schools more students drop out than graduate. It is a problem that can sometimes feel overwhelming to address because the causes of dropout are myriad and complex. What is often lost in discussions about dropping out is the one factor that is most directly related to graduation-students' performance in their courses. In this research report, CCSR authors Elaine Allensworth and John Q. Easton look into the elements of course performance that predict whether students will graduate and suggest what schools and families can do to keep more teens in school. Building on earlier CCSR research of "on-track indicators" that demonstrated a connection between failing freshman classes and dropping out, the authors found that a number of freshman-year factors can be used to predict high school graduation. Grades are as predictive as on-track indicators; almost all students with a "B" average or better at the end of their freshman year graduate, compared to only a quarter of those with a "D" average. The research also revealed how critical attendance is for freshman success. Conventional wisdom holds that eighth grade test scores are good predictors of students' likelihood to do well in high school courses. However, course attendance is eight times more predictive of course failure in the freshman year than test scores. Just one week of absence is associated with a much greater likelihood of failure, regardless of incoming achievement. The authors also examine how school practices affect students' grades, failure rates and attendance. Students' grades and attendance are particularly better than expected in schools characterized by two features-supportive relationships between teachers and students, and a perception among students that the work they are doing in high school is preparing them for the future.

Book Multidisciplinary Research Perspectives in Education

Download or read book Multidisciplinary Research Perspectives in Education written by Indika Liyanage and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The editors of this extraordinary book, Indika Liyanage and Badeng Nima, have brought together a wonderfully wide-ranging collection of chapters. The breadth and depth of the studies of education issues in China and Australia are impressive. The topics encompass important questions concerning education policies, curricula, pedagogy, equality, parental engagement, cultural heritage, and anti-drug education. The scope of the book includes Chinese and Australian settings that range from kindergartens to higher education, and from rural to urban environments. The diversity of the book strengthens rather than weakens its coherence, because the golden thread running through all the chapters is a portrayal of the complexity of education provision when global, national and local forces interact. Written by academics with hands-on experience, the chapters provide evidence-based discussions of practical conundrums, enriched by the sophisticated use of interdisciplinary approaches. As a result, this book is powerful, challenging and ground-breaking.” – Bob Adamson, UNESCO Chairholder in TVET and Lifelong Learning, Education University of Hong Kong

Book Smart Health

  • Author : Andreas Holzinger
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2015-02-24
  • ISBN : 3319162268
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Smart Health written by Andreas Holzinger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prolonged life expectancy along with the increasing complexity of medicine and health services raises health costs worldwide dramatically. Whilst the smart health concept has much potential to support the concept of the emerging P4-medicine (preventive, participatory, predictive, and personalized), such high-tech medicine produces large amounts of high-dimensional, weakly-structured data sets and massive amounts of unstructured information. All these technological approaches along with “big data” are turning the medical sciences into a data-intensive science. To keep pace with the growing amounts of complex data, smart hospital approaches are a commandment of the future, necessitating context aware computing along with advanced interaction paradigms in new physical-digital ecosystems. The very successful synergistic combination of methodologies and approaches from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD) offers ideal conditions for the vision to support human intelligence with machine learning. The papers selected for this volume focus on hot topics in smart health; they discuss open problems and future challenges in order to provide a research agenda to stimulate further research and progress.
