Download or read book Light Up The Potential of Light in Museum Architecture written by Andrea Graser and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic artificial light in museums In galleries and museums, one’s perception of art, space, and atmosphere is largely determined by lighting. But which light settings should art and museum experts and exhibition designers choose, and on what basis are those choices made? Pioneering LED technologies make customized lighting scenarios possible, turning artificial light into an interactive material in museum architecture – not only in terms of design practice, but also in terms of real-time spatial experiences. Computer-controlled lighting technologies are breaking boundaries, allowing the individual to take full control of lighting design. Light Up explores the potential of dynamic artificial lighting technologies in museum architecture, offering new insights into the use of light in exhibition spaces. How LED technologies can be used to develop customized lighting scenarios Studies in the real context of art institutions as well as programming of interactive light simulations Documents the research project “White Cube Teleporter”

Book The Architecture of Light

Download or read book The Architecture of Light written by Mary Ann Steane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviewing the use of natural light by architects in the era of electricity, this book aims to show that natural light not only remains a potential source of order in architecture, but that natural lighting strategies impose a usefully creative discipline on design. Considering an approach to environmental context that sees light as a critical aspect of place, this book explores current attitudes to natural light by offering a series of in-depth studies of recent projects and the particular lighting issues they have addressed. It gives a more nuanced appraisal of these lighting strategies by setting them within their broader topographic, climatic and cultural contexts.

Book Light for Art s Sake

Download or read book Light for Art s Sake written by Christopher Cuttle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Current museum lighting practice is governed by conservation concerns, the aim being to minimize light exposure of exhibits to protect them from degradation. [This book] puts emphasis upon providing excellent visual presentation of the exhibits, and achieving this with light exposure ... [It] explores different approaches to museum lighting; examines visual responses to light and the damage caused by light exposure; reviews daylighting and electric lighting installations and how they are controlled; leads to practical procedures for designing, installing and maintaining effective museum lighting; [and] is illustrated with copious examples of daylighting and electric lighting installations fro museums around the world"--Page 4 of cover.

This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museum conservators and the like are well acquainted with the fact that some types of museum exhibits are susceptible to damage caused by exposure to light. Currently, such unwanted effects are often mitigated by avoiding non-visible light (UV and IR), limiting light level and restricting exposure duration. This approach can only go so far. The work in the Museum Lighting Protocol Project seeks to extend recommendations to include the potential of incident light in the visible spectrum to stimulate the sense of brightness (illuminance) and balance that against its potential to cause damage (irradiance). Instead of providing light with a smooth curve throughout the visual spectrum like current incandescent filament light sources, the authors propose a lighting methodology using illumination from only three spectral bands. This three-band source would have enough visual satisfaction as the incandescent sources while providing significantly less irradiance. Documentation on the theory, artwork and tests are all included in the report. There were various chromatic and achromatic works studied in differing color temperatures, both in the incandescent source and the experimental three-band source. The overall result is that for the same illumination and visual satisfaction, the three-band source had very significant lowering of the irradiance incident on the exhibited works. Subjects were questioned about any apparent differences they noticed, generally reporting only slight differences. The nature and import of the differences is discussed and the authors conclude that a practical light source for museums that utilized similar three-band light sources could be developed with equal visual satisfaction at equal illuminances. This would expose the exhibits to significantly less irradiance and thus reduce the rate of degradation of the objects on display.

Book excerpt: "Made of Light - the Art of Light and Architecture explores our illuminated world in a way that is both affecting and thought-provoking. Rather than addressing quantitive criteria, this book deliberately focuses on qualitative, ephemeral and abstract considerations and shows them to be an essential part of the relationship between light and built form. Made of Light is not intended to prescribe an approach; rather, it attempts to recognise that while we have our own, individual, subjective perception of light, there is also a dialogue to be had, through which this most exciting but elusive medium might be explored." "Jonathan Speirs and Mark Major was well-established authorities on light. Taking their cues from the natural world, their approach - at the forefront of lighting design - is both invigorating and inspirational. Edited by Anthony Tischhauser, this book includes an interview with both architects, as well as vivid illustrations of their personal approach to an architecture that is Made of Light."--BOOK JACKET.
