Book Light from Light

Download or read book Light from Light written by Louis K. Dupré and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revised edition of a longtime bestselling anthology of Christian mysticism, editors Louis Dupre and James Wiseman bring together selections from the writings of twenty-three of the most important Christian mystics, from Origen of Alexandria in the third century to Thomas Merton in the twentieth. This edition retains most of the authors included in the first addition, but has replaced some authors from that edition with ones that will be of greater interest to readers today, e.g., Francis and Clare of Assisi, Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal, and Evelyn Underhill. A general introduction discusses the place of mysticism within the Christian life as a whole, while individual chapter introductions place the mystical writers in their historical context and relate their works to others in the anthology. In addition, the editors have completely updated the bibliographies at the end of each chapter.Students and teachers of spirituality, as well as persons interested in their own spiritual growth, will welcome this popular revised resource, because it makes readily available in one volume major works by important Christian mystical writers. Like its predecessor, it is sure to be welcomed in the academic world and spiritual and devotional circles.

Book excerpt: We are not here by chance, but by the design of our Creator. God chose to confer upon man the unique distinction and capacity to know Him and to love Him. But how and in which way? The way is to comprehend that the Laws and teachings of the Manifestations of God are for us, and not for others. It is the way of singleness; it is the inner way, based on our individual efforts, will and understanding. It is a purely spiritual and mental way. It is the reflection of the Sun of Reality in our souls. With our actions, feelings, sensations, thinking and knowledge, we create some kind of mould, figure, shape, power and identity for our soul, and this is what we are and what our soul will become in the next world. Being in this journey, for itself is lovely: it is when a drop becomes an ocean, a tiny seed a lofty tree and a shadow transforms to a sun. It is then, when God engraves on our soul His love. This is a free composition, adaptation and compilation, based on topics and subjects or prerequisites of Mysticism, with the aim to elucidate and simplify this journey. I hope that it will be useful for some thirsty soul.

Book The Mystery of the Trapped Light

Download or read book The Mystery of the Trapped Light written by James Tunney and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the ages, in text and in practices, secretly and openly, spiritual and mystical people focused on the central concept of the force of light. A recurrent idea is that spirit is light and trapped in the world of material or flesh and needs to be released in some way. Many mystics have created a path of illumination to allow our inherent genius of light be liberated to return to its ultimate source. The mystery is about who and what we are and how we might see our spiritual evolution. At the same time scientism seems to attack spiritual activity. In the matrix the spirit lies Destined to fight towards the light To struggle in the harsh, hard brightness To seek the subtle true light This book is divided in two parts. The first part is an exploration that seeks to examine the approach within spirituality and mysticism to light in the context of scientific examination of light. The latter consists of lines, poetry or sutras. Poetic expression sets out the author's vision of a whole path of light reflecting perennial wisdom. Addressing mind and heart, the reader will find something that will help them reflect on their own beliefs or open an entirely new vista.

Book The Big Book of Christian Mysticism

Download or read book The Big Book of Christian Mysticism written by Carl McColman and published by Hampton Roads Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In popular usage, "mysticism" typically refers to New Age or Eastern forms of spirituality. However, the mystical tradition is also an important component of the Christian tradition. At its heart--and much like its expression in other faith traditions--Christian mysticism is an ancient practice that incorporates meditation, contemplation, worship, philosophy, the quest for personal enlightenment, and the experience of Divine presence. This volume is a comprehensive introduction and guide to Christian mysticism. It is a big book about a big possibility: the hope of achieving real, blissful, experiential unison with God. Among the topics covered here are a general introduction to mysticism, the Bible and mysticism, the history and types of Christian mysticism, biographical sketches of leading Christian mystics, and practical instructions about practicing mysticism today. This is a breathtaking work that explores a form of spirituality that has changed lives over the course of 2,000 years. Learning about Christian mysticism and how it has been articulated through the centuries will prove inspirational for today's seekers, regardless of the faith tradition. "The mystic is not a special kind of person; every person is a special kind of mytic." --William McNamara

Book Light Changes

Book excerpt: Light and experiences of light have fascinated humanity since the earliest of times. Annekatrin Puhle traces this fascination, taking a scholarly view of these experiences, raising exploratory questions where necessary and, as a good scientist, questioning, answering, and classifying the data that she puts before us. The data in the book is gathered from numerous sources, going right back in history, through that great period in the 19th century when surveys of apparitions and light phenomena were the focus of much public attention and scientific interest, to the present day and the presence of light in modern digital photographs, where a distinction has to be made between dust phenomena and what are true spiritual energies .

Book Let There Be Light

Download or read book Let There Be Light written by Dr Arthur B Stein and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let There Be Light celebrates the splendor of radiant Light that has been known, embodied and taught by mystics, saints and sages over the millennia. Readers at every level will enjoy this book for its insights and message of hope: Light is available to all who seek it with humility and grace. Within the world's sacred scriptures, many significant passages involve light-be it the "burning bush" experience of the lawgiver Moses on Mount Sinai, the "light brighter than a thousand suns" of which the Bhagavad Gita speaks, or the teaching of Jesus of Nazareth, "If thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be filled with light" (Matthew 6:22, KJV). We seek to highlight in this book those who have experienced this divine light. Numerous esoteric references to Inner Light appear not only in the scriptures of the distant past, but also within the personal experiential accounts by Masters, sages, and seers across the centuries. Also we draw upon wisdom stories and tales from many cultural and ethnic traditions. We draw attention to a number of significant related references and accounts by teachers and practitioners of the closely related phenomenon of Inner Sound, which is also known within various teachings or mystic lineages as "audible sound current," Naam, Word, "celestial music," or other descriptions. Testimonies are provided by persons who have experienced aspects of Inner Light and Sound in a variety of circumstances outside of formal religious or spiritual contexts. These may be precipitated, for example, by being profoundly moved by uplifting music, sudden personal epiphanies, near-death experiences (NDEs), and during the dying process itself. One common thread among great teachers, sages and practitioners of spiritual traditions have emphasized throughout the ages is that Inner Light and enlightenment can be most directly accessed by utilizing meditation, prayer and other contemplative practices. Today humankind collectively is faced with a host of great challenges: political, socio-economic, and ecological-which ultimately at their roots are primarily spiritual in nature. Fortunately, possibilities for transformational changes are also accessible. Increasing numbers of people of all ages around the planet, both individuals and collectively, are seeking to tap into resources that will enhance self-understanding and recognition of a "deeper" shared level of Self and consciousness, within themselves and in the world. Simply put, can enough persons of goodwill find sufficient common ground to pull together and live into being a unifying ethos for humanity? What will it take to build a nonviolent, sustainable world upon foundations of lovingkindness, compassion, cooperation and social justice? It has becoming increasingly clear that there can be no real peace in the world until there is peace within and between religions. It is encouraging in this regard to witness increased participation among the faith traditions in interfaith dialogue. Harbingers of positive change include the "new" interspiritual movement, which attracts people from a wide range of perspectives and highlights a growing awareness that the basic core of spiritual experience emerges from the same wellspring(s). We sincerity hope that Let There Be Light can help contribute to thoughtful questioning, appreciative listening, and openhearted dialogue as people with diverse origins come together to share their spiritual journeys with each other.

Book Mysticism in the Gospel of John

Download or read book Mysticism in the Gospel of John written by Jey Kanagaraj and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1998-04-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first detailed study of Johannine mysticism against a Palestinian Jewish background has been previously undertaken. This book investiages whether there was a "mystical" practice in first-century Palestine and whether John can be better understood in the light of such practice, if there was any. In analysis, two strands of Jewish mysticism, the early forms of Ma`aseh Merkabah and of Ma`aseh Bereshit, emerge as existing in first-century Palestine. While the former narrates by means of Ezek. 1 the experience of seeing God in His kingly glory, the latter describes the same expereince by using Gen. 1. This book consists of three parts. Part one analyses Hellenistic mysticism as expressed by the Hermetica and Hellenistic-Jewish mysticism as presented by Philo. Part two traces the important elements of Merkabah mysticism from the later Hekhalot literature and the Jewish and Christian writings belonging to 2 cent. BCE - 1 cent. CE by defining the term "mysticism" in terms of the fourteen aspects of Jewish mysticism, an exegetical study of seven themes is undertaken in Part Three. The study shows that the conceptual parallels in John with Hellenistic mysticism and Hellenistic-Jewish mysticism are very slender, but indicates John's polemical motive against the Merkabah mystics of his time. He calls them to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, by proclaiming that the divine glory, claimed by them to be revealed in human-like form on the throne, is now visible in the historical person, Jesus, particularly in his death on the Cross. Thus Jewish Throne-mysticism seems to have been reinterpreted by John as Cross-mysticism.
