Book excerpt: We live in a broken world. Amid the daily realities of sickness and isolation, disappointment and pain, it can be profoundly difficult to grasp the real goodness of God. But this is where God breaks into our darkness with beauty. In the wonder of creation, in art or film, story or song, in the kindness of his people and the good they create, God breaks into our pain in a tangible way, teaching us to trust his kindness and hope for his healing. Beauty is a voice singing into our suffering, beckoning us toward restoration. In This Beautiful Truth, Sarah Clarkson shares her own encounters with beauty in the midst of her decade-long struggle with mental illness, depression, and doubt. In a voice both vulnerable and reflective, she paints a compelling picture of the God who reaches out to us in a real and powerful way through the "taste and see" goodness of what he has made and what he continues to create amid our darkness. "To recognize and trust God's gift in pain," she writes, "empowers us to create and love as powerful witnesses to God's healing love in a hopeless world." If you want to renew your capacity to recognize and encounter God's beauty in your life, this hope-filled book will show you the way.

Book Light in the Darkness

Download or read book Light in the Darkness written by Gary H. Lovejoy and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When depression invades our hearts and minds, or those of our loved ones, many well-meaning Christians can respond with unhelpful advice on how to create light out of darkness. But perhaps the real question should be, what is blocking the light? Authors Gary Lovejoy and Gregory Knopf reveal why depression is a common symptom of so many very real problems that cast deep shadows, whether these problems are physical, emotional, or spiritual; often 'it's all three. Simply trying to will away the pain is no solution to what really troubles a soul. With authentic and practical wisdom, Light in the Darkness unpacks how depression in the believer can be an instrument of transformation, not a source of shame and self-condemnation. It's in the darkness that God provides the signal alerting sufferers to clear away life's damaging debris, which obscures the light of his truth. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hidden struggle against depression's devastating effects on mind and spirit has always attracted writers. Protagonists battling depression in fiction, cinema, and other media are frequently portrayed as nuanced, multifaceted figures whose internal conflicts are as formidable as any exterior challenges they may confront. This essay goes into the nuanced battle of depression, its impact on the individual, and its significance in storytelling as experienced by the protagonist. The Meaning of Depression Depression is a widespread mental health problem that affects millions of people throughout the world. It has been called the "common cold" of mental illnesses. Depression, in contrast to transitory melancholy, is characterized by an all-pervasive feeling of hopelessness, emptiness, and despair. Depression robs an individual of motivation, warps their view of the world, and drowns them in a sea of pessimism. Writing a protagonist who suffers from depression requires an in-depth familiarity of the disorder, from its causes to its many symptoms. Conflict Within the Heroine A protagonist who is depressed provides a fresh take on the story. Their inner agony becomes a main point, providing a powerful portrayal of the human soul in duress. A striking contrast between the protagonist's inner difficulties and the outward world is created by the protagonist's thoughts, feelings, and perceptions being veiled by the gloom of despair. This contrast is a useful tool for storytelling because it lets audiences feel the protagonist's anguish and understand the complexities of their mind. Relationship Effects The protagonist's connections with his or her loved ones are all affected by his or her depression. Because of the protagonist's struggle, the dynamics of these relationships are often altered, resulting in resentment, hostility, and alienation. Examining these difficulties in social interactions provides further context for the story and highlights the negative effects of depression on others. It's a chance to reflect on the strength of human bonds under pressure and how encouragement may alter perspectives.

Book Encountering Transcendence

Download or read book Encountering Transcendence written by Lieven Boeve and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of several contributions to a refined understanding of religious experience in view of contemporary theological epistemology. Diverse sample studies taken from the extensive field of religion, theology and religious studies reveal that 'religious experience' is today clearly a pivotal issue. More specifically, this is made evident in modern theological hermeneutics and in the anti-modern and/or post-modern reactions thereto, the theology of world religions and inter-religious dialogue, the contemporary resurgence of religiosity in Western society and culture, and the so-called turn to religion in contemporary continental philosophy. It would appear from such studies that the category of 'religious experience' is frequently called upon to clarify or explain the phenomenon of religion and religiosity on the one hand and to support and legitimise religious positions or the critique thereof on the other. Because of the loss of plausibility of tradition-bound religiosity and of foundational, so-called onto-theological schemes, 'religious experience' has come to constitute, for many, the last (or latest) point of departure and anchor for religion and religious thinking. This is certainly the case with respect to tendencies within contemporary Christian traditions and theological reflection. In a multitude of ways and from a variety of different perspectives, 'religious experience' and 'experience of transcendence' or 'of the divine' have gained a prominent place in philosophical and fundamental-theological conceptual schemes. In reaction to this, other authors have denied the very primacy given to religious experience in reflecting upon faith, pointing to the constitutive role of tradition and narrative without which there is no religious experience. From all this follows that the category of religious experience is in great need of reconceptualisation, not least from a theological point of view. On the one hand, religious experience is all too easily called upon to legitimise religious claims (often against 'tradition') and on the other hand, the category has become misleading in so far as it is tainted by the modern scientific understanding of experience - in reaction to which 'tradition' is then easily invoked to protect the core of religion. Both young scholars at the preceding junior conference and senior scholars during the conference's paper sessions presented from diverse perspectives new ways to conceive of religious experience in view of today's challenges of secularisation, religious plurality, the aestheticisation of religion, etc. The selected contributions have been arranged in four thematically oriented parts: 'Approaching Religious Experience in a Postmodern Age', 'Modern (re)Thinking of Religious Experience', 'Liberating Religious Experience', and 'Challenges for Spirituality'.
