Book Sparse representation of visual data for compression and compressed sensing

Download or read book Sparse representation of visual data for compression and compressed sensing written by Ehsan Miandji and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing advances in computational photography have introduced a range of new imaging techniques for capturing multidimensional visual data such as light fields, BRDFs, BTFs, and more. A key challenge inherent to such imaging techniques is the large amount of high dimensional visual data that is produced, often requiring GBs, or even TBs, of storage. Moreover, the utilization of these datasets in real time applications poses many difficulties due to the large memory footprint. Furthermore, the acquisition of large-scale visual data is very challenging and expensive in most cases. This thesis makes several contributions with regards to acquisition, compression, and real time rendering of high dimensional visual data in computer graphics and imaging applications. Contributions of this thesis reside on the strong foundation of sparse representations. Numerous applications are presented that utilize sparse representations for compression and compressed sensing of visual data. Specifically, we present a single sensor light field camera design, a compressive rendering method, a real time precomputed photorealistic rendering technique, light field (video) compression and real time rendering, compressive BRDF capture, and more. Another key contribution of this thesis is a general framework for compression and compressed sensing of visual data, regardless of the dimensionality. As a result, any type of discrete visual data with arbitrary dimensionality can be captured, compressed, and rendered in real time. This thesis makes two theoretical contributions. In particular, uniqueness conditions for recovering a sparse signal under an ensemble of multidimensional dictionaries is presented. The theoretical results discussed here are useful for designing efficient capturing devices for multidimensional visual data. Moreover, we derive the probability of successful recovery of a noisy sparse signal using OMP, one of the most widely used algorithms for solving compressed sensing problems.

Book Light Field Applications to 3 dimensional Surface Imaging

Download or read book Light Field Applications to 3 dimensional Surface Imaging written by Wenxian Hong and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure of light around a scene may be contained in a 4-dimensional array known as a light field. This thesis describes methods for acquiring and manipulating light fields for applications in 3-dimensional imaging. By actively sampling parts of the wavefront impinging on a lens, or using microlens arrays and patterned sinusoidal masks to modulate the rays reaching a camera, both the spatial distribution and directionality of light may be captured to produce light fields. Simple depth estimation algorithms using stereo and focus measures are then applied to recover quantitative depth information. Experiments on real-world light fields demonstrate their utility in performing digital refocusing, reconstructing occluded objects as well as accurately estimating depth and shape. The performance of the algorithms developed are discussed theoretically and compared empirically.

Download or read book Chlorophyll a Fluorescence written by G.C. Papageorgiou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-12 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chlorophyll a Fluorescence: A Signature of Photosynthesis highlights chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence as a convenient, non-invasive, highly sensitive, rapid and quantitative probe of oxygenic photosynthesis. Thirty-one chapters, authored by 58 international experts, provide a solid foundation of the basic theory, as well as of the application of the rich information contained in the Chl a fluorescence signal as it relates to photosynthesis and plant productivity. Although the primary photochemical reactions of photosynthesis are highly efficient, a small fraction of absorbed photons escapes as Chl fluorescence, and this fraction varies with metabolic state, providing a basis for monitoring quantitatively various processes of photosynthesis. The book explains the mechanisms with which plants defend themselves against environmental stresses (excessive light, extreme temperatures, drought, hyper-osmolarity, heavy metals and UV). It also includes discussion on fluorescence imaging of leaves and cells and the remote sensing of Chl fluorescence from terrestrial, airborne, and satellite bases. The book is intended for use by graduate students, beginning researchers and advanced undergraduates in the areas of integrative plant biology, cellular and molecular biology, plant biology, biochemistry, biophysics, plant physiology, global ecology and agriculture.

Book Unstructured Light Fields

Download or read book Unstructured Light Fields written by Myers Abraham Davis and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a system for interactively acquiring and rendering light fields using a hand-held commodity camera. The main challenge we address is assisting a user in achieving good coverage of the 4D domain despite the challenges of hand-held acquisition. We define coverage by bounding reprojection error between viewpoints, which accounts for all 4 dimensions of the light field. We use this criterion together with a recent Simultaneous Localization and Mapping technique to compute a coverage map on the space of viewpoints. We provide users with real-time feedback and direct them toward under-sampled parts of the light field. Our system is lightweight and has allowed us to capture hundreds of light fields. We further present a new rendering algorithm that is tailored to the unstructured yet dense data we capture. Our method can achieve piecewise-bicubic reconstruction using a triangulation of the captured viewpoints and subdivision rules applied to reconstruction weights.

Book Light Field Imaging Applied to Reacting and Microscopic Flows

Download or read book Light Field Imaging Applied to Reacting and Microscopic Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light field imaging, specifically synthetic aperture (SA) refocusing is a method used to combine images from an array of cameras to generate a single image with a narrow depth of field that can be positioned arbitrarily throughout the volume under investigation. Creating a stack of narrow depth of field images at varying locations generates a focal stack that can be sued to find the location of objects in three dimensions. SA refocusing is particularly useful with reconstructing it can also be used for shape reconstruction. This study applies SA refocusing to reacting flows and microscopic flows by performing shape reconstruction and 3D PIV on a flame, and 3D PIV on flow through a micro channel. The reacting flows in particular posed problems with the method. Reconstruction of flame envelope was successful except for significant elongation in the optical axis caused by cameras viewing the flame from primarily one direction. 3D PIV on reacting flows suffered heavily from the index of refraction generated by the flame. The refocusing algorithm used assumed the particles were viewed through a constant refractive index (RI) and does not compensate for variations in the RI. This variation caused apparent motion in the particles that obscured their true locations making the 3D PIV prone to error. A microlens array was placed in the imaging section of the setup to capture a light field from the scene, which was then refocusing using SA refocusing. PIV on these volumes was compared to a CFD simulation on the same channel. Comparisons showed that error was most significant near the boundaries and the step of the channel. The axial velocity in particular had significant error near the step were the axial velocity was highest. Flow-wise velocity, though, appeared accurate with average flow-wise error approximately 20% throughout the channel volume.

Book Spectral and Spatial Light Field Encoding for Tissue Imaging Drug Delivery and Focused Field Shaping

Download or read book Spectral and Spatial Light Field Encoding for Tissue Imaging Drug Delivery and Focused Field Shaping written by Saharnaz Baghdadchi and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical signatures of the biological tissues and spectral characteristics of the chemotherapy agents provide distinctive information on the nature of these tissues and the chemical properties of the chemotherapy drugs delivered at the tumor sites. Equipping the tools routinely used in interventional procedures, with optical guidance could provide real-time feedback on the characteristics of the tissues and the drugs under examination by acquiring and evaluating their spectral information. A new optically guided needle system is designed here that transmits the spectrally encoded modulated light to the medium at the tip of the needle and processes the detected backscattered light to sense the presence of the blood or bile within the liver parenchyma, differentiate the benign and malignant breast tissue, activate a photocleavable prodrug and estimate the amount of the drug accumulated at the tumor site. In addition to spectral imaging of the tissues, spatially encoded light fields were used to generate images of the objects hidden within scattering materials and methods were proposed to calculate and generate the desired spatially encoded vectorial fields at the focus of high NA lenses. The results of the imaging through scattering experiments showed that utilizing the designed set of spatially encoded projection patterns significantly reduced the number of measurements required to reconstruct an image of the hidden objects. The developed reflective imaging setup is compatible with the majority of the bio-imaging settings. To generate the desired spatially encoded vectorial light fields at the image plane of the high NA lenses, a new method was proposed to calculate the required incident fields with spatially varying polarizations in the back focal plane of the lenses. With the refresh rate of 40 Hz for calculating 128128-pixel incident fields, this method could be used to update and adjust the designed focused fields in near real time. The application of this method in generating line traps for imposing translational movement on the trapped particles was also discussed.

Book Waves and Imaging through Complex Media

Download or read book Waves and Imaging through Complex Media written by P. Sebbah and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in wave propagation in random media are certainly consequences of new approaches to fundamental issues, as well as of a strong interest in potential applications. A collective effort has been made to present in this book the state of the art in fundamental concepts, as well as in biomedical imaging techniques. As an example, the recent introduction of wave chaos, and more specifically random matrix theory - an old tool from nuclear physics - to the study of multiple scattering, has pointed the way to a deeper understanding of wave coherence in complex media. At the same time, efficient new approaches for retrieving information from random media promise to allow wave imaging of small tumors in opaque tissues. Review chapters are written by experts in the field, with the aim of making the book accessible to the widest possible scientific audience: graduate students and research scientists in theoretical and applied physics, optics, acoustics, and biomedical physics.
