Book Ultrasonics International 91

Download or read book Ultrasonics International 91 written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonics International 91 is a documentation of conference proceedings that discusses the status and future of acoustic microscopy and its application to materials research, especially focusing on its quantitative analyses. Acoustic microscopy, using focused waves, has been receiving increased attention as a technology applicable to materials characterization at the microscopic scale. In acoustic microscopy, the excitation and propagation of leaky surface acoustic waves (LSAWs) in the environment of the coupling liquid at the solid specimens are observed. Three types of the systems have been developed: point-focus-beam (PFB), line-focus-beam (LFB), and directional PFB acoustic microscopes. In this paper, a brief history of the practical developments is first presented, followed by LFB acoustic microscopy for quantitative material characterization and some applications concerned with characterization of elastic anisotropy and inhomogeneity of electronic materials, such as LiNb03 and LiTa03 single crystals, and thin-film characterization. This book gives a comprehensive account of the majority of the oral and poster contributions made during the conference, and makes a valuable addition to a student or researchers' ultrasonic literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains 17 invited papers and 80 communicated papers presented at the International Symposium on Physical Acoustics, held at the University Campus of Kortrijk, Belgium, from 19-22 June 1990. The twenty-fifth anniversary of the Campus was celebrated with special activi ties such as concerts, exhibitions and scientific meetings. This symposium was a part of the celebration. The 120 participants came from 18 different countries. Among the largest groups we mention 32 French contributions and 19 contributions from the U.S.S.R. We especially thank Prof. V.V. Proklov from Moscow and Prof. S.V. Kulakov from Leningrad who helped us with the distribution of invitations in the U.S.S.R. We also thank Prof. G. Quentin and Ir B. Poiree from Paris who endeav oured to inform all French acousticians. We thank all the lecturers for their effort in producing the material for the book in time. The invited lectures have been collected and retyped by Prof. M. Breazeale (U.S.A.), while the contributed papers were collec ted by Prof. O. Leroy and retyped in Belgium. The first 200 pages of the book comprise the invited lectures, not classified by topic, but are in alphabetical order with reference to the first author. The second part of the book contains the contributed papers and posters also classified in alphabetical order according to the first author.

Book Light Diffraction by Ultrasonic Waves as a Multiple Scattering Process

Download or read book Light Diffraction by Ultrasonic Waves as a Multiple Scattering Process written by H. V. Hance and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of light diffraction by ultrasonic waves has been studied extensively in the past, but quantitative investigations have been limited in scope, probably because of computational difficulties. Recently, there has been developed a method of analysis that allows numerical computation for arbitrarily specified conditions to be carried out on a digital computer. This method, which employs approximate theory and an iterative process, is used in this study to investigate the ultrasonic diffraction effect over a wide range of conditions. When the ratio of light wavelength to ultrasonic wavelength is small compared to unity, the theoretical development on which this numerical analysis is based shows that the intensities in the various diffraction orders are determined by three nondimensional parameters. These parameters are related to three physical parameters of the ultrasonic beam-wavelength, intensity, and width-and two physical parameters of the light beam-wavelength and incidence angle. Special attention is given to the variation of diffracted-beam intensity with variation of the parameters about values that produce strong Bragg scattering into the -1st order. These conditions are of particular interest because of the possibility of diverting all incident-beam power into one diffraction order under control of the ultrasonic beam. In addition, the conditions required for strong Bragg diffraction into the -2nd order are determined. (Author).
