Book excerpt: This book, written by one of the pioneers of laser theory, is now considered a classic by many laser physicists. Originally published in the prestigious Encyclopedia of Physics series, it is now being republished in paperback to make it available not only to professors and scientists, but also to students. It presents a thorough treatment of the theory of laser resonators, the quantum theory of coherence, and the quantization of electromagnetic fields. Especial emphasis is placed on the quantum-mechanical treatment of laser light by means of quantum-mechanical Langevin equations, the density matrix equation, and the Fokker-Planck equation. The semiclassical approach and the rate equa tion approach are also presented. The principles underlying these approaches are used to derive the relevant equations, from which, in turn, the various properties of laser light are derived. Preface. The concept of the laser came into existence more than a decade ago when SCHAWLOW and TOWNES showed that the maser principle could be extended to the optical region. Since then this field has developed at an incredible pace which hardly anybody could have foreseen. The laser turned out to be a meeting place for such different disciplines as optics (e. g. spectroscopy). optical pumping, radio engineering, solid state physics, gas discharge physics and many other fields. The underlying structure of the laser theory is rather simple.

Book excerpt: The concept of the laser came into existence more than a decade ago when ScHAWLOW and TowNES showed that the maser principle could be extended to the optical region. Since then this field has developed at an incredible pace which hardly anybody could have foreseen. The laser turned out to be a meeting place for such different disciplines as optics (e.g. spectroscopy), optical pumping, radio engineering, solid state physics, gas discharge physics and many other fields. The underlying structure of the laser theory is rather simple. The main questions are: what are the light intensities (a), what are the frequencies (b), what fluctua tions occur (c), or, in other words, what are the coherence properties. Roughly speaking these questions are treated by means of the rate equations (a), the semiclassical equations (b), and the fully quantum mechanical equations (c), respectively. The corresponding chapters are written in such a way that they can be read independently from each other. For more details about how to proceed, the reader is advised to consult Chap. I.4.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 159 elements only between states which differ in one of the single-electron wave functions, in short, HeR induces only one-electron transitions. The matrix elements 1mn and Pmn reduce to matrix elements between the single-electron wave functions. We are interested primarily in crystalline solids for which the band model is a good approximation. The Bloch single-electron wave function in this model has the form: N'I ili-';; U. r.;;) ( (1.14) ""nk r, =e nh\r , where n is the band index and U (r) has the periodicity of the lattice. The form of the Bloch function follows from the translational symmetry of the crystal, and the matrix elements between Bloch states are subject to the condition of wave-vector conservation: k'=k, for

Book Electronic Engineering and Informatics

Download or read book Electronic Engineering and Informatics written by G. Izat Rashed and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2024-04-11 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic engineering and informatics are disciplines which underpin the complex digital technology on which we have all now come to depend. This book presents the proceedings of ICEEI 2023, the 5th International Conference on Electronic Engineering and Informatics, which took place as a hybrid event from 23 to 25 June 2023 in Wuhan, China, with around 150 participating delegates. The conference brought together leading academics, researchers and practitioners from around the world to present recent innovations, trends, and concerns, and discuss practical challenges and solutions. It also gave delegates the opportunity to share their experience and research results and exchange views on all aspects of electronic engineering and informatics. A total of 266 submissions were received for the conference, of which 93 were accepted for presentation and publication after a careful double-blind peer review process. The papers are divided into 3 sections, covering electronic device simulation and system modelling; target recognition and information decision making; and network data processing and security detection. Providing a current overview of advances and research results in the relevant fields, the book will be of interest to those working in all areas of electronic engineering and informatics.

Book Mid infrared Quantum Cascade Lasers for Chaos Secure Communications

Download or read book Mid infrared Quantum Cascade Lasers for Chaos Secure Communications written by Olivier Spitz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mid-infrared domain is a promising optical domain because it holds two transparency atmospheric windows, as well as the fingerprint of many chemical compounds. Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are one of the available sources in this domain and have already been proven useful for spectroscopic applications and free-space communications. This thesis demonstrates how to implement a private free-space communication relying on mid-infrared optical chaos and this requires an accurate cartography of non-linear phenomena in quantum cascade lasers. This private transmission is made possible by the chaos synchronization of two twin QCLs. Chaos in QCLs can be generated under optical injection or external optical feedback. Depending on the parameters of the optical feedback, QCLs can exhibit several non-linear phenomena in addition to chaos. Similarities exist between QCLs and laser diodes when the chaotic dropouts are synchronized with an external modulation, and this effect is known as the entrainment phenomenon. With a cross-polarization reinjection technique, QCLs can generate all-optical square-waves. Eventually, it is possible to trigger optical extreme events in QCLs with tilted optical feedback. All these experimental results allow a better understanding of the non-linear dynamics of QCLs and will extend the potential applications of this kind of semiconductor lasers.

Book Light and Matter Id Licht und Materie Id

Download or read book Light and Matter Id Licht und Materie Id written by H. Bilz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamical properties of solids have recently attracted renewed interest in connection with the increasing understanding of phase transitions and re lated phenomena. In particular, soft modes or, more generally, phonon 'anom alies' seem to play an important role in structural and electronic phase tran sitions, such as ferroelectric or superconducting transitions. The understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the occurrence of unusually low frequencies in phonon spectra requires a detailed analysis of the microscopic forces governing the lattice vibrations. Of particular importance is the influence of the electron lattice interaction in the adiabatic approximation which in many cases is the origin of peculiarities in the phonon self-energy. In this work the vibrational spectra of pure non-metals and of those con taining point defects are investigated. ' In these materials the interrelation be tween the pseudo-harmonic forces (determining the phonon dispersion re lations) and the non-linear anharmonic and electron-phonon forces (as they act in infrared and Raman spectra) is most obvious and can be quantitatively analysed in terms of appropriate models. The main task is to arrive at a physically correct treatment of electronic degrees of freedom, as for example in an electronic 'shell' model, which leads to the description of phonon spectra in terms of long-range polarizabilities and short-range deformabilities. The pur pose of our review is to stimulate further investigations which, we hope, will result in explicit relations between the parameters of the semi-microscopic models and the matrix elements from the electronic band structure.
