Book Manic Depressive Insanity and Paranoia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manic Depressive Insanity and Paranoia Classic Reprint written by Emil Kraepelin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manic-Depressive Insanity and Paranoia The conception of Manic-Depressive Insanity as a definite form of mental disorder, various and antithetical though some of the symptoms appear to be in different attacks and even in different phases of the same attack, is one of Professor Kraepelin's most happy generalisations. Naturally, so startling a departure from older classifications was not at first accepted by all, though the way for recognition had been paved by the differentiation and description of Folie Circulaire by French alienists, but further experience and familiarity with the idea led to the almost universal admission of its truth. It is to Professor Kraepelin's credit that he also has developed his own views with increase of knowledge, for he now includes what is often called Involution Melancholia in this group, his failure to do so in his original statement having been regarded by many as a mistake. Professor Kraepelin's account of Manic-Depressive Insanity, conjoined with that of Dementia Praecox, forms probably his greatest achievement in psychiatry. The last word, however, has not been said on the subject. Many important problems have yet to be solved. Professor Kraepelin, for example, apparently takes the physiological view that the essential feature of Mania is excitement and excitability, and of Depression or Melancholia, inhibition and depression of function. This leads to difficulty when Anxious or Excited Melancholia comes to be dealt with, which is avoided if the psychological view be adopted, that the symptoms in Mania are but morbid developments of the feelings of elation or anger, and in Melancholia of depression and despair, or of fear and anxiety, a species of caricature of these feelings as Maudsley has suggested. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its first depictions in ancient medical literature to contemporary depictions in brain imaging, mania has been largely associated with its Greek roots, "to rage." Prior to the nineteenth century, "mania" was used interchangeably with "madness." Although its meanings shifted over time, the word remained layered with the type of madness first-century writers described: rage, fury, frenzy. Even now, the mental illness we know as bipolar disorder describes conditions of extreme irritability, inflated grandiosity, and excessive impulsivity. Spanning several centuries, Manic Minds traces the multiple ways in which the word "mania" has been used by popular, medical, and academic writers. It reveals why the rhetorical history of the word is key to appreciating descriptions and meanings of the "manic" episode." Lisa M. Hermsen examines the way medical professionals analyzed the manic condition during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and offers the first in-depth analysis of contemporary manic autobiographies: bipolar figures who have written from within the illness itself.

Book Psychic Empire

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cate I. Reilly
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2024-06-11
  • ISBN : 0231560397
  • Pages : 239 pages

Download or read book Psychic Empire written by Cate I. Reilly and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nineteenth-century imperial Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, new scientific fields like psychophysics, empirical psychology, clinical psychiatry, and neuroanatomy transformed the understanding of mental life in ways long seen as influencing modernism. Turning to the history of psychiatric classification for mental illnesses, Cate I. Reilly argues that modernist texts can be understood as critically responding to objective scientific models of the psyche, not simply illustrating their findings. Modernist works written in industrializing Central and Eastern Europe historicize the representation of consciousness as a quantifiable phenomenon within techno-scientific modernity. Looking beyond modernism’s well-studied relationship to psychoanalysis, this book tells the story of the non-Freudian vocabulary for mental illnesses that forms the precursor to today’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Developed by the German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin in the 1890s, this psychiatric taxonomy grew from the claim that invisible mental illnesses were analogous to physical phenomena in the natural world. Reilly explores how figures such as Georg Büchner, Ernst Toller, Daniel Paul Schreber, Nikolai Evreinov, Vsevolod Ivanov, and Santiago Ramón y Cajal understood the legal and political consequences of representing mental life in physical terms. Working across literary studies, the history of science, psychoanalytic criticism, critical theory, and political philosophy, Psychic Empire is an original account of modernism that shows the link between nineteenth-century scientific research on the mental health of national populations and twenty-first-century globalized, neuroscientific accounts of psychopathology and sanity.
