Book Care and Capitalism

Download or read book Care and Capitalism written by Kathleen Lynch and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The logics and ethics of neoliberal capitalism dominate public discourses and politics in the early twenty-first century. They morally endorse and institutionalize forms of competitive self-interest that jettison social justice values, and are deeply antithetical to love, care and solidarity. But capitalism is neither invincible nor inevitable. While people are self-interested, they are not purely self-interested: they are bound affectively and morally to others, even to unknown others. The cares, loves and solidarity relationships within which people are engaged give them direction and purpose in their daily lives. They constitute cultural residuals of hope that stand ready to move humanity beyond a narrow capitalism-centric set of values. In this instructive and inspiring book, Kathleen Lynch sets out to reclaim the language of love, care and solidarity both intellectually and politically and to place it at the heart of contemporary discourse. Her goal is to help unseat capital at the gravitational centre of meaning-making and value, thereby helping to create logics and ethical priorities for politics that are led by care, love and solidarity.

Book Life in Rural America

Download or read book Life in Rural America written by Robert L. Scardamalia and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-11-06 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s urban population has been growing while rural areas are declining – especially after the great recession. This is not new, as rural decline has been affected by the long-term shift from an agriculturally based economy to a service based economy. However, the preference of many millennials for urban settings exacerbates the issue and reduces the rural community’s ability to replenish the population. Life in Rural America: A Statistical Portrait presents economic and demographic indicators of the rural population and help users understand the community and geographic differences that rural communities experience. The book will be used as a reference source for data users looking to understand community and geographic differences in the rural component of the nation’s population.

Book Short Term Load Forecasting 2019

Download or read book Short Term Load Forecasting 2019 written by Antonio Gabaldón and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short-term load forecasting (STLF) plays a key role in the formulation of economic, reliable, and secure operating strategies (planning, scheduling, maintenance, and control processes, among others) for a power system and will be significant in the future. However, there is still much to do in these research areas. The deployment of enabling technologies (e.g., smart meters) has made high-granularity data available for many customer segments and to approach many issues, for instance, to make forecasting tasks feasible at several demand aggregation levels. The first challenge is the improvement of STLF models and their performance at new aggregation levels. Moreover, the mix of renewables in the power system, and the necessity to include more flexibility through demand response initiatives have introduced greater uncertainties, which means new challenges for STLF in a more dynamic power system in the 2030–50 horizon. Many techniques have been proposed and applied for STLF, including traditional statistical models and AI techniques. Besides, distribution planning needs, as well as grid modernization, have initiated the development of hierarchical load forecasting. Analogously, the need to face new sources of uncertainty in the power system is giving more importance to probabilistic load forecasting. This Special Issue deals with both fundamental research and practical application research on STLF methodologies to face the challenges of a more distributed and customer-centered power system.

Book Scholarship in Action Essays on the Life and Work of Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje 1857 1936

Download or read book Scholarship in Action Essays on the Life and Work of Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje 1857 1936 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-02-06 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dutch scholar Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857–1936) was one of the most famous orientalists of his time. He acquired early fame through his daring research in Mecca in 1884-85, masterly narrated in two books and accompanied by two portfolios of photographs. As an adviser to the colonial government in the Dutch East Indies from 1889 until 1906, he was on horseback during campaigns of “pacification” and published extensively on Indonesian cultures and languages. Meanwhile he successively married two Sundanese women with whom he had several children. In 1906 he became a professor in Leiden and promoted together with colleagues abroad the study of modern Islam, meant to be useful for colonial purposes. Despite his considerable scholarly, political, and cultural influence in the first decades of the twentieth century, nowadays Snouck Hurgronje has been almost forgotten outside a small circle of specialists, since he mainly published in Dutch and German. The contributors to this volume each offer new insights about this enigmatic scholar and political actor who might be considered a classic proponent of “orientalism.” Their detailed studies of his life and work challenge us to reconsider common views of the history of the study of Islam in European academia and encourage a more nuanced “post-orientalist” approach with ample attention for cooperation, exchange, and hybridization. Book The Criminology of Carlo Morselli Part II

Download or read book The Criminology of Carlo Morselli Part II written by David Décary-Hétu and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second of two volumes, this book about the criminology of Carlo Morselli includes a diversity of contributions that study the social inter-dependence of criminal phenomena. It presents various studies on the importance and impact of social ties on offenders, victims and the social response to crime. The idea that social relationships are central to the understanding of human phenomena draws its roots from Jacob Moreno’s work in 1934, whose contribution – among others made at about the same time – paved the way for social network analysis (SNA), a set of methods and approaches that study dyadic relationships and their connections to other dyads in the same network. Surprisingly, SNA was not widely adopted in criminology until the end of the 20th century. It took researchers like Carlo Morselli to apply the principles of SNA and graph theory to criminological objects. As a researcher, Morselli embodied SNA; he was a so-called ‘broker’ in his network of social scientists, linking dozens of excellent researchers that he collaborated with, directly or not. Granovetter showed that ‘weak ties’ – or acquaintances – were important in the diffusion of new ideas, and Morselli put that insight to practice in criminology. While it is impossible to summarise Carlo Morselli’s work in a single paper or book, the breadth of his contributions to criminology are highlighted in the six chapters of this volume, which all draw from a specific area of interest of Carlo Morselli. The Criminology of Carlo Morselli - Part II will be a key resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Sociology, Social Sciences. The chapters included in this book were originally published as a special issue of Global Crime.

Book Innovations in Fishing Technology Aimed at Achieving Sustainable Fishing

Download or read book Innovations in Fishing Technology Aimed at Achieving Sustainable Fishing written by Alessandro Lucchetti and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years, human exploitation of marine resources has become more efficient as the understanding of the habits and behaviour of the various species available in the sea gradually increased. Thus, technologies have developed naturally over time and fishing gears and practices have become more sophisticated. These technical advances in fishing gear have generally led to more efficient economic fishing operations and better access to resources. However, fishing implies the harvesting of marine organisms directly from their natural environment, therefore general awareness of environmental problems due to the exploitation of fishery resources has also increased. In particular, the poor selectivity of some gears is responsible for the capture of juveniles, immature and undersized specimens of many species, with negative consequences on the state of stocks. In addition, bycatch in marine fisheries is a major source of human-caused mortality of marine megafauna, often leading to the capture of vulnerable species. Finally, many bottom-towed gears are responsible for high impacts on bottom communities and habitats, with cascading consequences on the entire marine ecosystem. All these impacts can lead to changes in the structure, function and integrity of ecosystems, including effects on the food webs and multispecies predator-prey relationships.
