Book excerpt: Life with God for Children is spiritual formation curriculum for children. It has been used in Sunday school, children's church, small groups, homeschooling and even adapted for Vacation Bible School. Life with God for Children is based on the people profiles in The Renovaré Life with God Bible. While the children are engaging in a life together, they are also engaging in the lives of those in the Bible who have journeyed with God. They learn the ways in which people in the Bible have connected with God, and then practice the same. These ways of connecting with God are called spiritual disciplines. Life with God for Children uses the twelve classic spiritual disciplines written about in Celebration of Discipline, by Richard J. Foster. Over the course of a year, the children will practice all twelve in kid friendly ways. Life with God for Children is moldable to the child. There are portions for nearly every kind of learner. It is available in four volumes, written for individual developmental levels. Each level requires a Bible that is developmentally appropriate. Suggestions are made within the curriculum. The entire curriculum consists of: Preschool and Kindergarten First and Second Grade Third and Fourth Grade Fifth and Sixth Grade A biblical time line, which can be downloaded at www.GoodDirtMinistries.org/curriculum. A CD of original music with an accompanying songbook, Do Life with Me. Every human ever born receives a spiritual formation. The question becomes just what kind of spiritual formation will we receive. Life with God for Children is based on the premise that children are born with a hunger to be in relationship with God. Right from the womb they search the eyes around them for connection. Children have a natural openness to God, therefore Life with God for Children was written to give children a place and space to experience God. Life with God for Children is about true connection. Entertainment has become the fast and sterile substitute for the hard work of relationships. Children are hungry for relationships. They come into this world looking for connections. They call our names to woo us, they learn to make eye contact, and they cry and giggle, all for connection. Unfortunately our driving desire to be entertained has left us relationally depleted. For this reason, this curriculum has not been written to entertain. Instead it has been written to give children what they need, what they really want, and what they have been asking for if we were listening- relationship. Relationship with the adults who love them and relationship with Jesus who loved them so much he lived and died for them. That's not to say that there won't be fun, or laughter, or the exhilarating sense of celebration. A life with God is full of these emotions. Our focus is connection, both to God and to each other, because that is what we are all seeking no matter how old we are.

Book Living in the Children of God

Download or read book Living in the Children of God written by David E. Van Zandt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the height of the religious ferment of the 1970s, David Van Zandt studied firsthand the most vilified of the new radical religious movements--the Children of God, or the Family of Love. First feigning membership and later gaining the permission of the Family, the author lived full-time in COG colonies in England and the Netherlands. From that experience, he has produced an informed, insightful, and humane report on how COG members function in what seems at first to be a completely bizarre setting. The COG, an offshoot of the Jesus People movement of the late 1960s, was one of the first radical religious groups to be accused of "brainwashing." Led by the charismatic David Berg, known as Moses David, the group demands total commitment from its full-time members and proselytizes continuously. Until recently the COG used sex as a proselytizing tool, and it continues to encourage full sexual sharing among group members. Instead of examining the COG's ideology in the abstract, Van Zandt analyzes how its ideas are understood and used by ordinary members in their daily lives. For them the Family is its practical, day-to-day, and all-consuming activities, such as "litnessing" (the street sale of COG literature). This is a vivid eyewitness account that will fascinate anyone interested in life in modern radical communal religions, such as the Unification Church and the Hare Krishnas, as well as in other radical, Christian-based, total-commitment groups. Van Zandt's frank reflections on his near-conversion experience and on the ethics of his covert observation enrich our knowledge of doing research with such groups. Originally published in 1991. Book What Is God Like

Download or read book What Is God Like written by Rachel Held Evans and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The late, beloved Rachel Held Evans answers many children's first question about God in this gorgeous picture book, fully realized by her friend Matthew Paul Turner, the bestselling author of When God Made You. Children who are introduced to God, through attending church or having loved ones who speak about God, often have a lot of questions, including this ever-popular one: What is God like? The late Rachel Held Evans loved the Bible and loved showing God’s love through the words and pictures found in that ancient text. Through these pictures from the Bible, children see that God is like a shepherd, God is like a star, God is like a gardener, God is like the wind, and more. God is a comforter and support. And whenever a child is unsure, What Is God Like? encourages young hearts to “think about what makes you feel safe, what makes you feel loved, and what makes you feel brave. That's what God is like.”

Download or read book Life with God written by Richard J. Foster and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2010-05-04 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often, our study of the Bible focuses on searching for specific information or some formula that will solve our pressing needs of the moment. But what if we approached the Bible differently, and instead of transforming the text to meet our needs, allowed it to transform us? That's exactly the idea behind Life with God, Richard J. Foster's much-anticipated book on the Bible. Foster, bestselling author of Celebration of Discipline and general editor of The RenovarÉ Spiritual Formation Bible, claims that God has superintended the writing of Scripture so that it serves as the most reliable guide for Christian spiritual formation. According to Foster, the Bible is all about human life "with God." As we read Scripture, we should consider how exactly God is with us in each story and allow ourselves to be spiritually transformed. By opening our whole selves—mind, body, spirit, thoughts, behavior, and will—to the page before us, we begin to grasp all the Bible has to teach about prayer, obedience, compassion, virtue, and grace and apply it to our everyday lives to achieve a deeper relationship with God. With a wealth of examples and simple yet crucial insights, Life with God is an indispensable guide to approaching the Bible through the lens of Christian spiritual formation, revealing that reading the Bible for interior transformation is a far different endeavor than reading the Bible for historical knowledge, literary appreciation, or religious instruction.

The freshness and honesty of her own prayers and her helpful prompts invite them to find and value their own words as offerings to a God who wants to be in relationship with them.” –Anabel Proffitt, Associate Professor of Educational Ministries, Lancaster Theological Seminary

Download or read book Life in The Family written by James D. Chancellor and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2000-07-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a unique insider's perspective—including interviews with more than seven-hundred family members—James Chancellor charts The Family's course since its emergence as the most controversial group to grow out of the Jesus People Movement in the 1960s. Chancellor, who had extraordinary access to rare Family records, includes the experiences of members who have remained loyal to the community and to the founding vision of their prophet, David Brandt Berg. In the first book of its kind—comprising often painful personal histories and firsthand accounts—Chancellor focuses on the motivation and process of becoming a Child of God, the core beliefs of the community, the mission of the disciples, their shifting sexual mores, and the cost of membership in terms of internal discipline and external persecution. Intense confrontation with the legal, religious, political, and educational establishment marked the movement's activities from the beginning. The young disciples heeded the call of their prophet to flee a soon-to-be-destroyed North America. Dispersed throughout Europe, Latin America, Africa, and East Asia, they virtually disappeared from the American landscape. In the late 1980s, The Family had gone through extreme theological and lifestyle changes, including a radical reordering of their sexual ethos. The Children of God started to come home. Now a worldwide counterculture of some twelve thousand members, the movement's colorful history reveals a profoundly religious group that has tested the limits of human experience.
