Book Snow on the Equator

Download or read book Snow on the Equator written by H.W. Tilman and published by Vertebrate Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'To those who went to the War straight from school and survived it, the problem of what to do afterwards was peculiarly difficult.' For H.W. 'Bill' Tilman, the solution lay in Africa: in gold prospecting, mountaineering and a 3,000-mile bicycle ride across the continent. Tilman was one of the greatest adventurers of his time, a pioneering climber and sailor who held exploration above all else. He made first ascents throughout the Himalaya, attempted Mount Everest, and sailed into the Arctic Circle. For Tilman, the goal was always to explore, to see new places, to discover rather than conquer. First published in 1937, Snow on the Equator chronicles Tilman's early adventures; his transition from East African coffee planter to famed mountaineer. After World War I, Tilman left for Africa, where he grew coffee, prospected for gold and met Eric Shipton, the two beginning their famed mountaineering partnership, traversing Mount Kenya and climbing Kilimanjaro and Ruwenzori. Tilman eventually left Africa in typically adventurous style via a 3,000-mile solo bicycle ride across the continent—all recounted here in splendidly funny style. Tilman is one of the greatest of all travel writers. His books are well-informed and keenly observed, concerned with places and people as much as summits and achievements. They are full of humour and anecdotes and are frequently hilarious. He is part of the great British tradition of comic writing and there is nobody else quite like him.

Book Across East African Glaciers

Download or read book Across East African Glaciers written by Hans Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across East African Glaciers: An Account of the First Ascent of Kilimanjaro In the matter of geographical exploration, which may be said to constitute the groundwork of the successful development of all countries, German East Africa has not hitherto shared the advantages enjoyed by our colonies on the western side of the continent. There, and more especially in our Protectorate of the Cameroons, the work of geographical research has been systematically carried out under Government supervision and at Government expense, whereas the exploration and exploitation of East Africa have been left entirely to the more limited resources of commercial companies. In all the expeditions which have penetrated the region since the first delimitation of the various spheres of interest, the interests of Geography and of Science in general have been of secondary importance to the making of treaties and the establishment of stations. It seemed to me, therefore, that, since Government showed no signs of moving in the matter, the work of geographical research in East Africa must be taken up by private individuals, I resolved to devote myself and my means to it forthwith; and in the course of three expeditions I have done my best to make known the districts geographically the most interesting and colonially the most valuable. Book My Kilimanjaro My Perseverance

Download or read book My Kilimanjaro My Perseverance written by Monde A Mondi and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story is about the trip I undertook to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Climbing Kilimanjaro was not in my bucket list of things I wanted to do before the end of my time in this world, nor was I physically ready to be part of such a great venture. My experience of this venture related very well with how I see the world around me and how we as people engage and relate with the universe. Climbing Kilimanjaro became a perfect analogy on how to interpret the life we live. It was about the survival on this earth. Our interaction with people and earthly creation is fully captured in a matter of few days on the mountain.
