I want to tell everyone that has the nerve to read this truth about my loving son. What they did to him and my family. I raised my six children after my husband died. I took of care of my mother until she passed. I have had to stand tall and not let the tears flow so fast I can’t see. I am trying now, but it is rough. I had to stay strong because we owed for our home when Jim died, and I did not want to lose it. I know that there are people who wanted to help us with this case, but the judge would not let them talk. I thought in my young life I also had been through a lot, but nothing compares to this. My writing is tearstained from crying. It has taken me fifteen years to write this book. I have kept a copy of the News Journal of the trial days. I have tried to write every day to understand what and why this was done to my son and my family. I could feel my late husband near me. I knew they were against us. I counted on the blue bows to help me get through all the lies. Now there is one blue bow left hanging on my red tree. When we can beat the lies and get my son home for good, I will bury all the news articles and the blue bow at the base of that wonderful tree. I have counted on this book to tell the bad stuff. There is very little good stuff. I am now ninety-six years old. I must live long enough to tell the good people the truth. I pray every day that the injustice our country is going through will soon pass. And God will bless our country again. I thank God every day that Milton, my son, has the power to stand up under the unforgettable experience and feel the joy of an uplifted spirit and know he is loved.

Book excerpt: Sarajevo Under Siege offers a richly detailed account of the lived experiences of ordinary people in this multicultural city between 1992 and 1996, during the war in the former Yugoslavia. Moving beyond the shelling, snipers, and shortages, it documents the coping strategies people adopted and the creativity with which they responded to desperate circumstances. Ivana Maček, an anthropologist who grew up in the former Yugoslavia, argues that the division of Bosnians into antagonistic ethnonational groups was the result rather than the cause of the war, a view that was not only generally assumed by Americans and Western Europeans but also deliberately promoted by Serb, Croat, and Muslim nationalist politicians. Nationalist political leaders appealed to ethnoreligious loyalties and sowed mistrust between people who had previously coexisted peacefully in Sarajevo. Normality dissolved and relationships were reconstructed as individuals tried to ascertain who could be trusted. Over time, this ethnography shows, Sarajevans shifted from the shock they felt as civilians in a city under siege into a "soldier" way of thinking, siding with one group and blaming others for the war. Eventually, they became disillusioned with these simple rationales for suffering and adopted a "deserter" stance, trying to take moral responsibility for their own choices in spite of their powerless position. The coexistence of these contradictory views reflects the confusion Sarajevans felt in the midst of a chaotic war. Maček respects the subjectivity of her informants and gives Sarajevans' own words a dignity that is not always accorded the viewpoints of ordinary citizens. Combining scholarship on political violence with firsthand observation and telling insights, this book is of vital importance to people who seek to understand the dynamics of armed conflict along ethnonational lines both within and beyond Europe.

From August 15 to September 27, Prussian forces bombarded this border city, killing hundreds of citizens, wounding thousands more, and destroying many historic buildings and landmarks. For six terror-filled weeks, "the city at the crossroads" became the epicenter of a new kind of warfare whose indiscriminate violence shocked contemporaries and led to debates over the wartime protection of civilians. The Siege of Strasbourg recovers the forgotten history of this crisis and the experiences of civilians who survived it. Rachel Chrastil shows that many of the defining features of "total war," usually thought to be a twentieth-century phenomenon, characterized the siege. Deploying a modern tactic that traumatized city-dwellers, the Germans purposefully shelled nonmilitary targets. But an unintended consequence was that outsiders were prompted to act. Intervention by the Swiss on behalf of Strasbourg's beleaguered citizens was a transformative moment: the first example of wartime international humanitarian aid intended for civilians. Using a distinctive regressive method, it begins with the present and works backwards, avoiding teleological interpretations that suggest the targeting of civilians in war is a modern phenomenon.
