LAW--MYSTERY OP FELONY BACKED BY ASSASSINATION --RULOPP THE PERPETRATOR OP EIGHT MURDERS-- PEARPUL CHAIN OP CIRCUMSTANCES. The old and usually quiet borough of Binghamton, N. Y., was greatly excited with the dawn of the new year, by a murder trial that had in it enough of the terribly dramatic to move even a community accustomed as New York to such horrors from the even tenor of its daily life. It is not strange, therefore, that the Binghamton .court-house should have been the centre of attraction to all classes, luring the farmer from his fields, the lawyer from his briefs, the physician from his patients, the artizan from his bench, and the scholar from his studies. No more cruel crime than this was ver committed, and no criminal was ever surrounded with more of the tragically romantic than Edward Ruloff, alias Edward C. Howard, alias Edward Lenrio, the .culprit lately put on trial. 'WOHKING TTP THE CASE. Captain Hedden and Detective Keilley beginning with most slender clues, worked patiently and shrewdly for many weeks upon this case, until they at last unravelled many mysteries and laid bare lives of crime cloaked by assumed respectability. Such signal success as crowned their efforts rarely falls to the lot of detective experience, because such patience and common sense in dealing with isolated facts is rarely displayed. It is not proper to state exactly how the information received was obtained by Hedden and Keilley, and the re'ader must be content with knowing that by the aid 'of these officers Mr. Hopkins was enabled to present an almost impregnable case to the jury. He was prepared to prove who the dead men were, and to trace.them, step by step, for...

Book excerpt: " '... you cannot kill a unquiet spirit, and I know that my impending death will not mean the end of Rulloff. In the dead of the night, walking along Cayuga Street, you will sense my presence. When you wake to a sudden chill, I will be in the room. And when you find yourself alone at the lake shore, gazing away at gray Cayuga, know that I was cut short and your ancestors killed me.' These were the words of Edward H. Rulloff as he faced the gallows in May of 1871, following some twenty-five years at war with society. He was unrepentant murderer, thief and bona fide evil genius who committed robberies to fund his grandiose research into the lost origin of all languages. His trial created a sensation in post-Civil War America, inspriring a wry editorial by no less a personage than Mark Twain." - back cover

Selected for graphic appeal, range of subject matter, and historic interest, these broadsides show the attitudes and literary appetites of Pennsylvania Germans as expressed in printed matter. Known for their love of color and decoration, Pennsylvania Germans often hand-illuminated broadsides so that many are classified as fraktur. Flying Leaves and One-Sheets will appeal to readers in Pennsylvania German visual arts, culture, and history."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection contains material related to two different trials that involved Edward H. Rulloff. Edward H. Rulloff (or Ruloff) was tried and convicted in 1846 for the presumed murder of his wife but lacking a body and any tangible evidence he was charged only with abduction and served ten years. Upon his release he was then charged with the murder of his daughter - again without a body. Following his claims that the daughter was well but that he refused to disclose where she was living to protect her from his wife's family Rulloff was sentenced to another ten years in prison for the abduction. During his appeal of the conviction Rulloff escaped from prison but was recaptured. His second abduction conviction was overturned and he was released. He returned to upstate New York where he was involved in a series of violent robberies one of which resulted in the murder of a store clerk, Frederick A. Merrick. Rulloff and two accomplices split up and escaped. The two accomplices subsequently drowned under mysterious circumstances and Rulloff was eventually arrested and, once identified by the surviving store clerk was tried and sentenced to be executed. His appeal of the death sentence was dismissed.

Book excerpt: Acclaimed crime historian, podcaster, and author of American Sherlock Kate Winkler Dawson tells the thrilling story of Edward Rulloff—a serial murderer who was called “too intelligent to be killed”—and the array of 19th century investigators who were convinced his brain held the key to finally understanding the criminal mind. Edward Rulloff was a brilliant yet utterly amoral murderer—some have called him a “Victorian-era Hannibal Lecter”—whose crimes spanned decades and whose victims were chosen out of revenge, out of envy, and sometimes out of necessity. From his humble beginnings in upstate New York to the dazzling salons and social life he established in New York City, at every turn Rulloff used his intelligence and regal bearing to evade detection and avoid punishment. He could talk his way out of any crime...until one day, Rulloff's luck ran out. By 1871 Rulloff sat chained in his cell—a psychopath holding court while curious 19th-century "mindhunters" tried to understand what made him tick. From alienists (early psychiatrists who tried to analyze the source of his madness) to neurologists (who wanted to dissect his brain) to phrenologists (who analyzed the bumps on his head to determine his character), each one thought he held the key to understanding the essential question: is evil born or made? Eventually, Rulloff’s brain would be placed in a jar at Cornell University as the prize specimen of their anatomy collection...where it still sits today, slowly moldering in a dusty jar. But his story—and its implications for the emerging field of criminal psychology—were just beginning. Expanded from season one of her hit podcast on the Exactly Right network (7 million downloads and growing), in All That Is Wicked Kate Winkler Dawson draws on hundreds of source materials and never-before-shared historical documents to present one of the first glimpses into the mind of a serial killer—a century before the term was coined—through the scientists whose work would come to influence criminal justice for decades to come.

Book Mark Twain at the Gallows

Download or read book Mark Twain at the Gallows written by Jarrod D. Roark and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a literary exploration of Mark Twain's writings on crime in the American West and its intersection with morality, gender and justice. Writing from his office at the Enterprise newspaper in the Nevada Territory, Twain employed a distinct style of crime writing--one that sensationalized facts and included Twain's personal philosophies and observations. Covering Twain's journalism, fictional works and his own personal letters, this book contextualizes the writer's coverage of crime through his anxieties about westward expansion and the promise of a utopian West. Twain's observations on the West often reflected common perceptions of the day, positioning him as a "voice of the people" on issues like crime, punishment and gender.
