Should the Photographs present a tone painfully dark and gloomy, it will be remembered that most of them have been taken by moon light, from the night side of the city. They are not creations of the brain, but so far as the writer's knowledge of the art extends - they are truthful. Highly-wrought pictures, and more incidents, gathered from the experience of a week, month, or year, might have been produced; but as they occurred, so have they been given. With many imperfections, of which no one ean be more sensible than the writer, he commits his sketches to the public, hoping they may be the means of deepening the already deep interest felt in the subject of Life in the Streets, Wynds, and Dens of the City.
