This book was released on 2018-10-20 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium matrix composites (TMC) are being evaluated as structural materials for elevated temperature applications in future generation hypersonic vehicles. In such applications, TMC components are subjected to complex thermomechanical loading profiles at various elevated temperatures. Therefore, thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) testing, using a simulated mission profile, is essential for evaluation and development of life prediction methodologies. The objective of the research presented in this paper was to evaluate the TMF response of the (0/90)2s SCS-6/Timetal-21S subjected to a generic hypersonic flight profile and its portions with a temperature ranging from -130 C to 816 C. It was found that the composite modulus, prior to rapid degradation, had consistent values for all the profiles tested. A micromechanics based analysis was used to predict the stress-strain response of the laminate and of the constituents in each ply during thermomechanical loading conditions by using only constituent properties as input. The fiber was modeled as elastic with transverse orthotropic and temperature dependent properties. The matrix was modeled using a thermoviscoplastic constitutive relation. In the analysis, the composite modulus degradation was assumed to result from matrix cracking and was modeled by reducing the matrix modulus. Fatigue lives of the composite subjected to the complex generic hypersonic flight profile were well correlated using the predicted stress in 0 degree fibers. Mirdamadi, M. and Johnson, W. S. Book A Comparison of Life Prediction Methodologies for Titanium Matrix Composites Subjected to Thermomechanical Fatigue

Download or read book A Comparison of Life Prediction Methodologies for Titanium Matrix Composites Subjected to Thermomechanical Fatigue written by Calcaterra, JR. and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several methodologies have been developed to predict the lives of titanium matrix composites (TMCs) subjected to thermomechanical fatigue (TMF). This paper reviews and compares five life prediction models developed at NASA-LaRC, Wright Laboratories, and Clarkson University. The models developed at NASA-LaRC and Clarkson University are based on a single parameter, the fiber stress in the load-carrying, or 0°, direction. The two other models, both developed at Wright Labs, are multi-parameter models. These can account for long-term damage, which is beyond the scope of the single-parameter models, but this benefit is offset by the additional complexity of the methodologies. Each of the methodologies was used to model data generated at NASA-LeRC, Wright Labs, and Georgia Tech for the SCS-6/Timetal 21-S material system. Viscoply, a micromechanical stress analysis code, was used to determine the constituent stress state for each test and was used for each model to maintain consistency. The predictive capabilities of the models are compared, and the ability of each model to accurately predict the responses of tests dominated by differing damage mechanisms is addressed.

Book Fatigue Life Prediction of Titanium Matrix Composites Under Mission Spectrum Loading

Download or read book Fatigue Life Prediction of Titanium Matrix Composites Under Mission Spectrum Loading written by T. Nicholas and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue life predictions are conducted for a high temperature composite for hypersonic vehicle structural applications. A SCS-6/Timetal® 21S [0/90]s composite is evaluated under thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) as well as under typical hypersonic mission profiles and segments of those missions. The fatigue life analysis is based on micromechanical stresses which, in turn, are input into a damage summation model. Spectrum loading is decomposed into a series of in-phase and out-of-phase TMF segments whose lives are predicted from a life fraction model which was developed for isothermal and TMF data. Analytical predictions for the mission spectrum and the simple mission profiles are compared with experimental data obtained here as well as in a previous study. The model is demonstrated to be able to predict fatigue life under mission spectrum loading based solely on calibration under simple isothermal fatigue and TMF conditions.

Book Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading Mechanisms Mechanics and Modelling

Download or read book Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading Mechanisms Mechanics and Modelling written by J. Bressers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium "Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading", held at Petten (The Netherlands) on May 22-24, 1995, was jointly organized by the Institute for Advanced Materials of The Joint Research Centre, E. C. , and by the Societe Fran~se de Metallurgie et de Materiaux. The fast heating and cooling cycles experienced by many high temperature components cause thermally induced stresses, which often operate in combination with mechanical loads. The resulting thermal / mechanical fatigue cycle leads to material degradation mechanisms and failure modes typical of service cycles. The growing awareness that the synergism between the combined thermal and mechanical loads can not be reproduced by means of isothermal tests, has resulted in an increasing interest in thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue testing. This trend has been reinforced by the constant pull by industry for more performant, yet safer high temperature systems, pushing the materials to the limit of their properties. Dedicated ASTM meetings in particular have set the scene for this area of research. The proceedings of the symposium organized by D. A. Spera and D. F. Mowbray in 1975 provided a reference book on thermal fatigue which reflects the knowledge and experimental capabilities of the mid-seventies.

Book Strength of Fibrous Composites

Download or read book Strength of Fibrous Composites written by Zheng-Ming Huang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Strength of Fibrous Composites" addresses evaluation of the strength of a fibrous composite by using its constituent material properties and its fiber architecture parameters. Having gone through the book, a reader is able to predict the progressive failure behavior and ultimate strength of a fibrous laminate subjected to an arbitrary load condition in terms of the constituent fiber and matrix properties, as well as fiber geometric parameters. The book is useful to researchers and engineers working on design and analysis for composite materials. Dr. Zheng-Ming Huang is a professor at the School of Aerospace Engineering & Applied Mechanics, Tongji University, China. Mr. Ye-Xin Zhou is a PhD candidate at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the University of Hong Kong, China.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue failures occur in aerospace, marine, nuclear structures and automobile com ponents from initiation and propagation of cracks from holes, scratches or defects in the material. To design against these failures, crack propagation life and fracture strength need to be accurately predicted. It is reported in the literature, that these failures often initiate as surface cracks, corner cracks and cracks emanating from fastner holes. Such cracks are with elliptic or nearly elliptic in shapes. The deviation from elliptic shape is due to varying constraint effect along the crack front. Even in situations, when the cracks are through the thickness of the material, there would be thicknesswise variation of constraint effects leading to three dimensional nature of crack growth. Accurate predictions of the crack growth in these cases by numerical methods can be made only by solving three-dimensional boundary value problems. Empirical relationships have been developed [1] based on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics over years describing fatigue crack growth response. Some of these empirical relationships required modifications in the later stages, to meet the design applications. The Crack closure phenomenon discovered by Elber[2, 3] during the crack growth phase is mainly attributed to the local material yielding near the crack tip and the consequent residual plastic wake behind the crack tip. It helped considerably in understanding several aspects of fatigue crack growth and rewrite these relations.
