Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tale of the Thames It was the pursuit of this natural but neglected pastime that had brought the two, after an excellent early breakfast at the King's Head, Cirencester, vigorously tramping along the Tetbury Road as far as Thames Head Bridge. From the bridge they descended to the towing path of the nearly dry canal, thence they wandered down the bank into the pleasant meadow, hoping to discover the Source of the Thames. Our two friends had a vague notion Of making a tour of the Thames, partly on foot and partly by boat or canoe, but as yet they had no very definite view on the subject. Book From the Thames to the Trosachs Classic Reprint

Download or read book From the Thames to the Trosachs Classic Reprint written by Mrs. E. H. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Thames to the Trosachs The Epworth league, aiming for the complete Christian character, recognizes the importance of intelligence when superadded to an earnest spiritual life. The man of God needs knowledge, and not only knowledge in the word of life, but in the world of thought. Therefore in the course of reading of the Epworth League it is proposed to have each year at least one book of general literature, such as will enlarge the mental range and promote intellectual effort. In the selection and arrangement of this book various reasons influenced the committee. It was thought that some work on foreign travel would prove interesting to the readers in the League, and would suggest valuable programmes for literary meetings. As it would not be possible to make a general tour, that land was chosen which is of all lands most closely connected with America, and to no Church is nearer than to our own, since in it lived our founder, who with Luther and St. Paul looms up in history as one of the three greatest men in the annals of Christianity. All that is best in England is the heritage of America. Her literature is our literature, for we may enjoy Chaucer's tale and Shakespeare's strain and Bunyan's immortal dream and Browning's "veined humanity." The heroes of her history are ours - for Alfred and Cromwell and Pitt all joined hands in the making of America. If there had been no Runnymede and Marston Moor there would have been no Plymouth Rock and no Bunker Hill. Every American has the deepest interest in that land, which has been the bulwark of liberty and the mother of a mighty nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thames and Tweed From very early, if not from the earliest times, men seem to have enjoyed the pursuit and capture of fish. We find angling in our oldest written re cords, in the perhaps still more ancient records of the Egyptians. Job, in the earliest of our books (unless the Pentateuch be still earlier), is asked, Canst thou draw out Leviathan with a hook, or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down 9 Cleopatra, we are told, cajoled Mark Antony, Abel was a keeper of sheep -of domesticated sheep - such sheep as the Eastern shepherd has, ever since the actions of man were recorded, led forth to the green pastures; not of the Aoudad, the wild type of the race, the active, unsubdued creature, still found in numbers on Ararat and other mountains of the East. Job possessed cattle and asses, but surely neither the bison nor the buffalo, the quagga nor the zebra: untamed and untamable they then were untamed and untamable they continue to the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Father Thames In those days everything was on a much grander scale, and this river, though only a small tributary of the great main continental river, was a far wider and deeper stream than the Thames which we know. Here and there along the present-day river valley we can still see in the contours of the land and in the various rocks evidences of the time when this bigger stream was owing. (of this we shall read more in Book III.) Thus things were when there came the great surface change which enabled the water to ow across Wide tracts Of land and so form the British Islands, standing out separately from the mainland of Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles by Rivers, Vol. 1 of 2: The Thames To enjoy a Ramble on the banks of Thames. Cowper, Task, book i. While, however, to enjoy a ramble on the banks Of Thames actually is an easy matter, to describe it, or to enjoy it in a description, is not so easy. The general character of the scenery of the Thames is that of a calm and tranquil beauty, but with so much of sameness, that a continuous account of it would speedily become tedious: yet the endeavour to enliven it by digressions, however tempting, would protract a ramble beyond any reasonable length; while to enter, except in a cursory manner, into historical or antiquarian details, would little accord with a ramble at all. The space we are to pass over is so considerable, and the objects Of in terest in our way are so many, that we must Of necessity keep close to the river and only slightly survey what catches our attention as we saunter along it. We must not pretend to notice every thing that deserves to be noticed, and we must con fine ourselves to a general view. We shall thus, however, find sufficient to occupy as-i hope with out wearying us - or at least with only occasional weariness: there are spots beside every stream so absolutely barren, that weariness must be felt even by the best tempered, and I cannot expect that my river will be found an exception.
