Download or read book Life on the Plains and Among the Diggings written by Alonzo Delano and published by . This book was released on 1857 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Aurora, New York, Alonzo Delano (1806-1874) moved on to the Midwest as a teenager. July 1848 found him a consumptive Ottawa, Illinois, storekeeper, and he joined a local California Company. He remained in the West after the Gold Rush, winning fame as an early California humorist. Life on the plains and among the diggings (1857) is based largely on letters from Delano published in Ottawa and New Orleans newspapers of the day (see Alonzo Delano's California correspondence [1952]). Covering the period April 1849-August 1852, he discusses his voyage to St. Joseph and an overland journey to California; sojourns in Sacramento, Marysville, and San Francisco; and experiences as a storekeeper at Mud Hill, Stingtown, Gold Lake, and Grass Valley. Other topics include quartz mining, crime and vigilantism, and real estate investment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two kinds of illness set Alonzo Delano on the path to California in 1849: a bodily sickness that his doctor said would improve in the West...and GOLD FEVER. In one of the most fascinating pioneer accounts of the "mistakes and sufferings of the emigrants" as well as interactions with Native Americans, Delano left a highly detailed, fast-paced account of his trip across the plains and his time in the California gold rush. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Delano evinces a sympathy for the plight of Native Americans of his time and frustration with the white settlers' inability to see what was happening to an entire people in the West. Nevertheless, more than once he was armed and ready to confront approaching bands of Indians. Equally fascinating is Delano's descriptions of early California, the rough and tumble world of prospecting, and the lawless life in frontier towns. He made a successful life there after his mining expeditions and stayed for the rest of his days. Abridged and annotated. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE by clicking the cover above. Buy it today!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life on the Plains and Among the Diggings: Being Scenes and Adventures of an Overland Journey to California; With Particular Incidents of the Route, Mistakes and Sufferings of the Emigrants, the Indian Tribes, the Present and the Future if the Great West Whether toiling through the deep sands of the barren desert, suffering from hunger and thirst; or weary and way-worn in climbing stupendous heights of the Sierra; whether surrounded by death and desolation on the Plains, or obtaining slight repose in the new cities of the Pacific - the reminiscences of our happy, school-boy days, too often intrude on my memory, to permit me to forget my old and well-tried friend of early years. And now that the dangers are passed - when we can sit side by side in "the old arm chairs," and trundle the hoop, or throw the ball, in fancy, and laugh over our boyish follies - these recollections of by-gones only cement the kindly feeling, which is rarely "of this world." It is only a slight testimonial of respect - indeed, were it an hundred fold greater, you would deserve it - but such as it is, my heart dedicates this little work to you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When The World Rushed In was first published in 1981, the Washington Post predicted, “It seems unlikely that anyone will write a more comprehensive book about the Gold Rush.” Twenty years later, no one has emerged to contradict that judgment, and the book has gained recognition as a classic. As the San Francisco Examiner noted, “It is not often that a work of history can be said to supplant every book on the same subject that has gone before it.” Through the diary and letters of William Swain--augmented by interpolations from more than five hundred other gold seekers and by letters sent to Swain from his wife and brother back home--the complete cycle of the gold rush is recreated: the overland migration of over thirty thousand men, the struggle to “strike it rich” in the mining camps of the Sierra Nevadas, and the return home through the jungles of the Isthmus of Panama. In a new preface, the author reappraises our continuing fascination with the “gold rush experience” as a defining epoch in western--indeed, American--history.
