Book excerpt: This Lesson Guide offers a variety of learning experiences based on the award-winning children's book, ABOUT A FARM. It is targeted to students in grade 3 through 5. ABOUT A FARM consists of twelve chapters, each one featuring a "vignette" about an individual social situation or relationship. The farm is merely a setting for the story dynamics. These could just as easily take place almost anywhere, such as a city, a small town or neighborhood. The episodes that take place in each chapter are played out by the various animals and the humans who interact with them. Each chapter is theme-based. These include such concepts as sacrifice, prejudice, self-esteem, compromise and even response to the death of a friend. ABOUT A FARM is the recipient of a 2013 Children's Literary Classics International Book Award. It was selected by CLC as "Best First Chapter Book."

Book Agriculture and Life

Download or read book Agriculture and Life written by Arthur D. Cromwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture and Life: A Text-Book for Normal Schools and Teachers Reading Circles This book was written for teachers. It was written by one who for years has taught Agriculture and Nature Study to pupils of all grades and ages. Most of the book consists of lectures delivered many times before Farmers' and Teachers' Institutes. The book is intended for Teachers' Reading Circles and Normal Training Classes. This book does not take the place of the text-book, such as Davis's Productive Farming. This book is written by one of a large number of teachers who believe that we should teach from things largely and teach by having pupils do things worth while at home. This book should be of help on the teacher's desk as a guide for her daily work. Agriculture must at all times be closely correlated with the home activities of the pupils. School Agriculture aims to teach things that are new, are a little more worth while doing than what is being done; that being true, a book cannot present matter for all time and cover our big, varied country. The best things to do will be changing, and hence a book is hardly off the press before it is out of date. A book on teaching Agriculture will be valuable for its suggestions and for the enthusiasm it puts into the teachers to take hold of the work. The subjects presented in School Agriculture should have seasonal sequence. Schools open in September; at that time the home folk are gathering grain, garden vegetables and seeds. As cold weather approaches the home folk begin to prepare for sheltering the plants and animals; then winter comes and the home folk feed the stock, take part in the grain and stock shows, plan the farm and the work for another year. As spring approaches they become interested in the soil, crop rotations, plowing, etc. It will be noticed that the chapters largely follow the seasonal interests of the folk on the farms. But it is to be hoped that the teacher will not kill the interest in Agriculture by following too rigidly a course of study. Therefore suggestions are given in nearly every chapter for work to be done in other months of the year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A delightful anthology of classical Greek and Roman writings celebrating country living—ranging from a philosophy of compost to hymns to the gods of agriculture Whether you farm or garden, live in the country or long to move there, or simply enjoy an occasional rural retreat, you will be delighted by this cornucopia of writings about living and working on the land, harvested from the fertile fields of ancient Greek and Roman literature. An inspiring antidote to the digital age, How to Be a Farmer evokes the beauty and bounty of nature with a rich mixture of philosophy, practical advice, history, and humor. Together, these timeless reflections on what the Greeks called boukolika and the Romans res rusticae provide an entertaining and enlightening guide to a more meaningful and sustainable way of life. In fresh translations by classicist and farmer M. D. Usher, with the original texts on facing pages, Hesiod praises the dignity of labor; Plato describes the rustic simplicity of his ideal republic; Varro dedicates a farming manual to his wife, Fundania (“Mrs. Farmer”); and Vergil idealizes farmers as residents of the Golden Age. In other selections, Horace extols the joys of simple living at his cherished country farm; Pliny the Elder explains why all culture stems from agriculture; Columella praises donkeys and tells how to choose a ram or a dog; Musonius Rufus argues that farming is the best livelihood for a philosopher; and there is much more. Proof that farming is ultimately a state of mind we should all cultivate, How to Be a Farmer will charm anyone who loves nature or its fruits.
