Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Sir Walter Scott Criticism will not be attempted, because it would demand more space than it is thought well to occupy because the pre sent writer lacks the disposition for it; because the World is now Scott's judge, and because such criticism can be best gathered from the prefaces and notes to the numerous editions of his works. But to write a true biography, a history of the man's life, and to do so faithfully and lovingly, is all that has been here attempted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Walter Scott Life of Sir Walter Scott, in ten volumes. N o introduction to Scott would be worth much in which that course was not followed. Indeed, excepting Sir Walter's own writ ings, there is hardly any other great source of information about him; and that is so full, that hardly anything need ful to illustrate the subject of Scott's life remains un touched. As regards the only matters of controversy, Scott's relations to the Ballantynes, I have taken care to check Mr. Lockhart's statements by reading those of the representatives of the Ballantyne brothers; but with this exception, Sir Walter's own works and Lockhart's life of him are the great authorities concerning his character and his story. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Intimate Life of Sir Walter Scott For this presentation of Sir Walter is new. It is not the picture of him that is given in the books of last century, and it may be unsatisfactory in the eyes of 2020, but it is a twentieth-century portrait that contains lights and shadows obscure or absent in previous representations. This is the first time, too, that his first love has been discussed with common sense, and that anyone has taken the trouble to master the details of Scott's involved connection with the business firms and with their failure. He was, as I have been informed by a lady who chanced to live near him, a remarkably active and dauntless boy full of all manner of fun, and ready for all manner of mischief. He calls himself, in one of his introductions to Marmion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 10 Miss Fergusson was on her deathbed; and thus, when my wife and I were obliged to move south wards at the beginning of winter, Sir Walter was left almost entirely dependent on his daughter Anne, William Laidlaw, and the worthy domestics whom I have been naming. Mr. Laidlaw attended him occasionally as amanuensis when his fingers were chilblained, and often dined as well as break fasted with him; and Miss Scott well knew that in all circumstances she might lean to Laidlaw with the confidence of a niece or a daughter. Book Domestic Manners and Private Life of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint

Download or read book Domestic Manners and Private Life of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint written by James Hogg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Manners and Private Life of Sir Walter Scott The Ettrick Shepherd's "Familiar Anecdotes of Sir Walter Scott," as this little work has sometimes been named, calls for no apologetic preface upon its republication. The book throws so much light upon the social and more homely side of the Great Novelist's character, and, at the same time, reveals in so amusing a fashion the foibles and egotism of the worthy and justly celebrated "Shepherd," that it has always been exceedingly popular. In recent years, however, the volume has become so scarce that copies have been only obtainable at a very high price. The publisher therefore hopes that the present edition will enable those who love a good book in a good form, and who desire to possess the brief but interesting sketch, to add it to their stores. Book The Life of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint written by G Le Grys Norgate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir Walter Scott He is proud to count himself a gentleman and to claim descent from such celebrities Of the Border as Auld Watt of Harden and the Flower Of Yarrow. It was their son William who was fain to wed Meikle mouthed Meg. From this lady, whose story Browning has revived for us in a Characteristic poem, Sir Walter perhaps got a prominent feature Of his physiognomy. It is remarkable. That two of these Scotts of Harden were, like their descendant, lame, and, spite the fact, did very well in the world, just as he did. Not to dwell upon ancestry, we need merely at present further mention Scott's Jacobite great-grandfather (another Walter), who not only fought for the Stewart cause, but let his beard grow unshorn out of regret for its failure. Beardie 'must have been an ancestor after the author of Waverley's own heart. He quarrelled with his second son (walter's grandfather) because he would not go to sea, and the young man revenged himself terribly by becoming a Whig. This Robert Scott did well for himself in the cattle trade, having laid the foundations of his fortune by a lucky speculation with a hunter. He rode well to hounds, and was prominent in all field sports, wearing usually a jockey-cap over his grey hair. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir Walter Scott: Reprinted With Corrections and Additions From the Quarterly Review Since this sketch was written, Mr. Hope Scott has published a cheap edition of Lockhart's abridgment of the great work which supplied me with almost all my materials. Let me express the hope, that they who honour these pages with wa perusal, will look beyond them to the more important and interesting volume thus brought within their easy reach. For no judgment can be more sound in regard to matters like this than that which Mr. Hope Scott has delivered in his introductory letter, and with which I beg to close my own, perhaps, too elaborate preface. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Sir Walter Scott: Baronet The author has sought to produce something between the large work of Lockhart and the slighter biographies. He has not catered for gossip, and his book will be found to contain little, although there are not a few new facts sprinkled throughout. It aims rather at being an accurate summary of the leading events in Scott's life, and a candid, full, and genial criticism on his principal works. How far its aim has been successfully gained, the public must decide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir Walter Scott: Abridged From Lockhart's Life of Scott Sirwalterhadgivenhim, wrote, 'i maybe wrong, but I am vaguely under the impres sion that it has never had a really wide circula tion. If so, it is the saddest pity, and I should greatly like (without any censure on its pres ent length) to see published an abbreviation of it.' Mr. Gladstone did not then know that as long ago as 1848 Mr. Lockhart did himself prepare such an abbreviation, in which the original eighty-four chapters were compressed into eighteen, - though the abbreviation con tained additions as well as compressions. But even this abridgment is itself a bulky volume of 800 pages, containing, I should think, con siderably more than a third of the reading in the original ten volumes, and is not, therefore, very likely to be preferred to the completer work. In some respects I hope that this intro duction may supply, better than that bulky abbreviation, what Mr. Gladstone probably meant to suggest, - some slight miniature taken from the great picture with care enough to tempt on those who look on it to the study of the fuller life, as well as of that image of Sir Walter which is impressed by his own hand upon his works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 5 However this may have been, Scott's answer to Mr. Train proceeded in these words I am now to solicit a favour, which I think your interest in Scottish antiquities will induce you readily to comply with. I am very desirous to have some account of the present state of Turnberry Castle - whether any vestiges of it remain - what is the appearance of the ground - the names of the neighbouring places - and above all, what are the traditions of the place (if any) concerning its memorable surprise by Bruce, upon his return from the coast of Ireland, in the commencement of the brilliant part of his career. The purpose of this is to furnish some hints for notes to a work in which I am now engaged, and I need not say I will have great pleasure in mention ing the source from which I derive my information. I have only to add, with the modest importunity of a lazy correspondent, that the sooner you oblige me with an answer (if you can assist me on the subject), the greater will the obligation be on me.
