Book excerpt: In this biography, the acclaimed author of Sons of Providence, winner of the 2007 George Wash- ington Book Prize, recovers an immensely important part of the founding drama of the country in the story of Robert Morris, the man who financed Washington’s armies and the American Revolution. Morris started life in the colonies as an apprentice in a counting house. By the time of the Revolution he was a rich man, a commercial and social leader in Philadelphia. He organized a clandestine trading network to arm the American rebels, joined the Second Continental Congress, and financed George Washington’s two crucial victories—Valley Forge and the culminating battle at Yorktown that defeated Cornwallis and ended the war. The leader of a faction that included Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and Washington, Morris ran the executive branches of the revolutionary government for years. He was a man of prodigious energy and adroit management skills and was the most successful businessman on the continent. He laid the foundation for public credit and free capital markets that helped make America a global economic leader. But he incurred powerful enemies who considered his wealth and influence a danger to public "virtue" in a democratic society. After public service, he gambled on land speculations that went bad, and landed in debtors prison, where George Washington, his loyal friend, visited him. This once wealthy and powerful man ended his life in modest circumstances, but Rappleye restores his place as a patriot and an immensely important founding father.

Book Robert Morris s Folly

Download or read book Robert Morris s Folly written by Ryan K. Smith and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1798 Robert Morris—“financier of the American Revolution,” confidant of George Washington, former U.S. senator—plunged from the peaks of wealth and prestige into debtors' prison and public contempt. How could one of the richest men in the United States, one of only two founders who signed the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution, suffer such a downfall? This book examines for the first time the extravagant Philadelphia town house Robert Morris built and its role in bringing about his ruin. Part biography, part architectural history, the book recounts Morris’s wild successes as a merchant, his recklessness as a land speculator, and his unrestrained passion in building his palatial, doomed mansion, once hailed as the most expensive private building in the United States but later known as “Morris’s Folly.” Setting Morris’s tale in the context of the nation’s founding, this volume refocuses attention on an essential yet nearly forgotten American figure while also illuminating the origins of America’s ongoing, ambivalent attitudes toward the superwealthy and their sensational excesses.

Book excerpt: A HOLLYWOOD TRAGEDY REVEALED AFTER 60 YEARS!!! Robert Morris should have been a star. He was producer Bert Leonard's original choice to ride alongside George Maharis in Route 66; however, as the concept for the series evolved, Morris was out and Martin Milner was in. As Maharis and Milner prepared to drive into the annals of television history, Robert Morris relocated from New York to California to boost his career. What initially appeared to be a good move ended in tragedy. Less than a year after moving out west, Robert Morris died under peculiar circumstances at a "health ranch" in southern California at the age of 25. For the first time ever, the story of Robert Morris is finally being told: From his humble beginnings as Bobby Morawczynski, growing up in Reading, Pennsylvania; to his days at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City; his summer internship at the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut, in 1956; his television work in New York, most notably on episodes of Deadline and The Naked City, where he co-starred with George Maharis in a "backdoor pilot" for Route 66; to his final days in California where he met his untimely death. In his brief lifetime, Robert Morris worked alongside many people who would go on to fame and fortune, beginning with Lenny Moore, the Pro Football Hall of Famer whose career took shape on the field at Reading High School; Morris was the left halfback to Lenny Moore's right halfback. As a competitive bodybuilder, he shared the stage with Mickey Hargitay (Mr. Universe 1955), Yas Kuzuhara (Mr. USA 1954) and Harry Johnson (Mr. America 1959). At the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he took classes and hung out with the likes of Eileen Brennan, George Coe, Richard Stahl, Hoke Howell and Clint Kimbrough. At the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre, he worked with notable veterans like John Houseman, Norman Lloyd, John Emery, Stanley Bell, and Morris Carnovsky, up-and-comers like Nina Foch, Pernell Roberts, Fritz Weaver and Jonathan Frid, and future entertainment luminaries like Peter Bogdanovich, Michael Lindsay-Hogg and Jerry Stiller. His television work saw him share the screen with Steve McQueen, William Shatner, Ralph Bellamy, George Maharis, Paul Stewart, Vic Morrow, Michael Ansara, Rory Calhoun and Walter Matthau, working under directors like Robert Mulligan (To Kill A Mockingbird) and Stuart Rosenberg (Cool Hand Luke). Promise Unfulfilled: The Brief Life and Bizarre Death of Actor Robert Morris is the portrait of a man who put his best foot forward to attain the American Dream -- only to have tragedy intervene. Read the story as told by those who knew him -- his friends, family and colleagues, including George Maharis, Michael Lindsay-Hogg, Tony Franke, Barbara Lord Warburton, Pamela Saunders, Susan Quick, Harvey Grossman and Robert Heide.

Book excerpt: In Truly Free best-selling author Robert Morris invites us into a glorious truth—that the promise of being set free from the slavery of sin is a promise to be set free completely. Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18). As believers, we have Christ and never need to be afraid. Yet it’s also true that we are not immune to the effects of evil. Christ has conquered sin and death, but in his infinite wisdom—for reasons that are often difficult for us to understand—evil is still permitted to exist. Even if we’re saved and trust in Christ, we may still find areas in which we just can’t get victory. Maybe it’s a sin we’ve confessed again and again or a constant struggle with depression, anger, or lust. These long-imbedded patterns of shameful living continue to entangle us day after day, month after month, and even year after year. Although evil is real and Christians can be oppressed by it, we have the promise that the one who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world (1 John 4:4). Jesus saves us, trains us to resist the power of evil, and delivers us from anything that holds us back. With Jesus, we can be truly free forever.

Book Robert Morris

Download or read book Robert Morris written by William Graham Sumner and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-04-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Morris' tombstone states that he was "The Financier"; officially, however, he was Superintendent of Finance. Whatever his title, Robert Morris played an integral role in financing the American Revolution, and Yale Professor William G. Sumner examines Morris' life and actions to enhance our understanding of the finances of the young nation. In Volume I of a two-volume work, Sumner looks at the early life of Morris and his first years in public service through 1781. Born in Philadelphia, Morris was forty-one at the time of the Revolution and one of the wealthiest merchants in the colonies. Sumner notes, "His career as a public man then began. He took part in all the great enterprises of the United States which were not military, and he was not without influence on those." He had to organize the treasury and somehow make sure that soldiers were paid, the army was provided for, and creditors were appeased. The volume ends with the events of 1781, with Morris appointed the Financier during a tense era in our nation's history. WILLIAM GRAHAM SUMNER was a professor of political and social science at Yale University and became known as a Social Darwinist and advocate of the laissez faire principle in economics. Besides writing a number of books on sociology, history, and economics, he was also influential in the movement to modernize the American university system.
