Book Reinterpreting Emmet

Download or read book Reinterpreting Emmet written by Anne Dolan and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Emmet's life, death, and immediate elevation into the pantheon of Irish nationalist heroes are well known. These essays on Emmet's life and legacy, however, demonstrate a new interdisciplinary approach to studies of the Irish nationalist hero. "Reinventing Emmet" includes essays on commemoration, literature, legal history and aspects of the Emmet legacy not explored elsewhere, such as studies of his influence on American culture, and draws on research from young as well as established scholars. Robert Emmet is an Irish (and Irish-American) nationalist icon. Although Emmet's rebellion of 1803 was an embarrassing failure, his speech from the dock prior to his execution for high treason has captured national and international imagination. The trial, the speech, and the image of Emmet have in many ways superseded his actual achievements, and have been perpetually reproduced across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, culminating in the bicentenary of Emmet's rebellion in 2003. But what is Emmet's legacy? Is there more to this iconic figure than a failed rebellion and a memorable speech?

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1847 edition. Excerpt: ... APPENDIX. The manifesto of the provisional government, drawn up by Robert Emmet, and found at the Depot in Marshalsea-lane, was produced on the trial of Edward Kearney. Lieutenant Coltman, of the 9th regiment, proved that several bundles of this document were found in the Depot "quite wet from the press." Extracts from the documents have been published, and the entire manifesto that was produced on Kearney's trial is given in Ridgeway's Report, but, knowing the unscrupulous conduct of the government agents of that day with respect to such documents, I thought it desirable to give an exact copy of the original paper, the authenticity of which might be depended on. I am indebted to Miss M'Cracken for the copy of that document, and of the proclamation annexed to it, which were found among Russell's papers. "THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT TO THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND. "You are now called upon to shew the world that you are competent to take your place among nations; that you have a right to claim their recognizance of you, as an independent country: by the only satisfactory proof you can furnish of your capability of maintaining your independence, your wresting it from England with your own hands. "In the development of this system, which has been organized within the last eight months; at the close of internal defeat, and without the hope of foreign assistance, which has been conducted with a tranquillity mistaken for obedience, which neither the failure of a similar attempt in England has retarded, nor the renewal of hostilities has accelerated; in the development of this system you will shew to the people of England, that there is a spirit of perseverance in this country beyond their power to calculate or repress; you will shew to them that as...

Book excerpt: Robert Emmet was the romantic hero of the 1803 Irish Uprising. This is the definitive, thrilling account of his life and legend. Robert Emmet, the leader of the doomed July 1803 rebellion, was executed for treason by the British government in September 1803. He became a legend, fuelled by his speech from the dock after the judge pronounced sentence, his doomed romance with Sarah Curran (whose father, a Patriot advocate, had refused to help Emmet), the moving scenes from his last night in prison, and his courage and defiance at the scaffold. Two hundred years from his death, many nationalists can still recite by heart his famous death oration.
