Book Lives of the Popes

Download or read book Lives of the Popes written by Platina and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bartolomeo Platina (1421-1481), historian, political theorist, and author of a best-selling cookbook, began life as a mercenary soldier and ended it as the head of the Vatican Library. A papal official under the humanist Pope Pius II, he was a member of the humanist academies of Cardinal Bessarion and Pomponio Leto, and was twice imprisoned for conspiring against Pope Paul II. Returning to favor under Pope Sixtus IV, he composed his most famous work, a biographical compendium of the Roman popes from St. Peter down to his own time. The work critically synthesized a wide range of sources and became the standard reference work on papal history for early modern Europe, reprinted dozens of times and translated into a number of languages. A characteristic work of Renaissance humanism, it used Christian antiquity as a standard against which to criticize modern churchmen. This edition contains the first complete translation into English and an improved Latin text. Volume 1, the first of a projected four, covers the period from the founding of the church through ad 461.

Download or read book Life of St Peter written by François De Ligny and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an opportunity to review your scriptural knowledge of the first pope, and to take a journey through the early history of the Church. Learn the real reason for St. Peter's coming to Rome, and why he might have later been exiled from the city. Learn why the "Babylon" the saint mentions in his First Epistle refers to Rome. Learn who was the first writer who dared to deny that St. Peter was ever at that city. The author painstakingly proves, through ancient histories and the Church Fathers of the early centuries, that St. Peter's residence in the Eternal City cannot be refuted. Doubts about his presence there first arose in the 14th century; and in spite of the proofs contained in Fr. De Ligny's thoroughly researched work, controversy about St. Peter's residence in Rome persists to this day in some quarters.

Book excerpt: INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER "A remarkable book. Weigel's biography is likely to remain the standard one-volume reference on John Paul II for many years to come." — Pittsburg Post-Gazette ?“Fascinating. . . sheds light on the history of the twentieth century for everyone.” —New York Times Book Review The definitive biography of Pope John Paul II that explores how influential he was on the world stage and in some of the most historic events of the twentieth century that can still be felt today Witness to Hope is the authoritative biography of one of the singular figures—some might argue the singular figure—of our time. With unprecedented cooperation from John Paul II and the people who knew and worked with him throughout his life, George Weigel offers a groundbreaking portrait of the Pope as a man, a thinker, and a leader whose religious convictions defined a new approach to world politics—and changed the course of history. As even his critics concede, John Paul II occupied a unique place on the world stage and put down intellectual markers that no one could ignore or avoid as humanity entered a new millennium fraught with possibility and danger. The Pope was a man of prodigious energy who played a crucial, yet insufficiently explored, role in some of the most momentous events of our time, including the collapse of European communism, the quest for peace in the Middle East, and the democratic transformation of Latin America. With an updated preface, this edition of Witness to Hope explains how this “man from a far country” did all of that, and much more—and what both his accomplishments and the unfinished business of his pontificate mean for the future of the Church and the world.
