I have read them with the greatest interest. To them I am indebted for about all the historical knowledge I have." Considered what we would now call "young adult" literature, this collection, first published between 1848 and 1871, was designed to present a clear, distinct, connected narrative of the lives of the great figures of world history, those people who have been most influential, at least as American pastor and historian JOHN STEVENS CABOT ABBOTT (1805-1877) saw it from his 19th-century perspective. Wildly popular and republished many times under different collected names, this replica set mimics the 1904 reprint known as the "Makers of History" series. It will delight students of history as well as show the scholar how history telling has changed over the last few centuries. More than 30 other volumes in the series are also available from Cosimo Classics. This volume, dating from 1871, covers the last French king, Louis Philippe I (1773-1850), from the origin of the House of Orleans and the dethroning of Charles X to Louis Philippe's ascension and the ending of the monarchy.

Book History of Louis Philippe

Download or read book History of Louis Philippe written by John S. C. Abbott and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating account of the life, trials, tribulations-and ultimately failure-of one of Europe's first notable "constitutional monarchs," Louis Philippe (1773-1850). The first king to be properly elected by the National Assembly, his reign was based on the principle of union of king and people, and marked the first real shift away from the "divine right to rule" approach to kingship. This sweeping work reveals many details not generally known about this momentous change in European politics, all the while keeping the reader's attention by weaving together the story of Louis Philippe's youth, his years of exile, the dramatic events leading to his appointment as king, his extended family and relations, and finally his steady decline in popularity until his own forced abdication and exile in 1848. Regarded as a usurper by the aristocracy, but rejected by the masses because of the fact that he was made king by an assembly elected by only one hundred and fifty thousand voters-he was stalked by assassins at every step, becoming known as the "Target King." Finally, caught between the conflicting demands of the aristocracy and the 1848 revolutions, he resigned and fled into exile once again. "We may search history in vain for the record of any monarch so unrelentingly harassed as was Louis Philippe from the time he ascended the throne until he was driven from it. He was irreproachable in morals, a man who had seen much of the world in all its phases, sagacious and well meaning. But he was placed in a position in which no earthly wisdom could rescue him from the direst trouble."

Louis Philippe, the late king of the French, and one of the most remarkable men in Europe, was born in Paris, October 6, 1773. He is the eldest son of Louis Philippe Joseph, Duke of Orleans, better known under his revolutionary title of Philippe Egalite, and of Marie, only daughter and heiress of the wealthy Duke of Penthievre. The Orleans branch of the Bourbon family, of which Louis Philippe is now the head, originated in Philippe, a younger son of Louis XIII., created Due d'Orleans by his elder brother Louis XIV., and of whom the late French king is the grandson's great-grandson. Philippe, the first Duke of Orleans, was twice married; his second wife being Elizabeth Charlotte of Bohemia, granddaughter of James I. of England. From this lady the Orleans family are descended, and through her trace a direct relationship to the line of Stuart, and the present royal family of England. While a child, Louis Philippe was entitled Duke of Valois; but on His father succeeding to the title of Duke of Orleans, in 1785, he became Duke of Chartres, which for a number of years he retained. Whatever were the personal and political faults of Citizen Egalite, he was a kind father, and beloved by his children, five in number, one of whom, however, a daughter, died young. Desirous of imparting to his family a sound education, in which he himself had had the misfortune to be deficient, he committed them to the superintendence of Madame de Sillery, better known by her later adopted title of Countess de Genlis. Notwithstanding the subsequent errors of this lady, she was eminently qualified, by her talents and dispositions, to be an instructress of youth. The principles on which she based her plans of education were considerably in advance of the age, and such...
