Jemima, the eldest child, married John Pitner, the son of Henry and Deborah, of. Bucks county, about 1786. He was born at Penn's Manor, August 18, 1755, and married, in early life, a daughter of a Captain Thompson, of near Newtown. Six daughters and two sons were born to Jemima and John Pitner: Sarah, May 21, 1787, and died September 9, 1809, of yellow fever; James Neely, September 29, 1788, died about 1842 Deborah, June, 19, 1790, died April 5, 1879; Mary, May 30, 1792, and has been dead half a century; Anna, January 11, 1794, died December 14, 1836; John, October 19, 1796, died October. 15, 1823; William, October 29, 1798, died April 10, 1833; and Eliza N., born July 12, 1802, still living (1885) at Wilmington, Dela ware. Several of these children married and left large families. John Pitner lived at Newtown several years after his Second marriage, but removed to Maryland, five miles west of Newark, in 1811. I cannot speak out loud. A large part of my body is paralyzed, so this has been a slow and difficult task and has taken a long time. I wish the reward of a rich blessing upon the lady who so kindly gave me her spare moments to write down my thoughts. I could not sit and write and re-write as I might if I were well. Nor could I wait until I was in the mood for writing. I had to work whenever I could get some one to write for me, and so the pictures are not so graphic nor the sentences so smooth nor the thought so cohesive as I would like. J. E. Davis. Preface To The Second Edition. The first edition of 1,000 copies of the "Life Story of a Leper" sold rapidly, and we are glad to issue a second and larger edition. From all over the land have come expressions of inspiration received from the reading of this wonderful life. We are sure that the book will yet find its way into thousands of homes. It is everywhere deepening interest in that most unfortunate class of people in India - the lepers - and it is a strange Providence that the one through whose prayers and pleadings the Leper Asylum at Ramachandrapuram is so largely due, should himself have become a martyr to the disease. Mr. Davis never ceased to express his appreciation of the attention of the doctor and kind nurses at the Government Asylum at Tracadie, N.B., where he spent the last five years of his life, and of the thoughtfulness of the "Mission to Lepers in India and the East," to whose generous support the Leper work at Ramachandrapuram is so greatly indebted and whose Secretary in Great Britain visited him and ministered to him during his stay at the Hospital for Oriental Diseases in London.
