Book The Story of Japan Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Japan Classic Reprint written by R. Van Bergen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Japan Our nearest neighbor across the Pacific has been reckoned among the foremost nations of the earth ever since, in the late war with China, she humiliated that vast but inert empire. Japan will have a voice in the future destiny of Asiatic countries, and in that of the islands of the Pacific. Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written. It was deemed essential to explain repeatedly the key to the history of Japan and to the reforms of our time, by noticing the overpowering influence of the samurai of old, who were and still are the makers of the nation. With a very few exceptions, the nobles of Japan have been wholly dependent upon their leading samurai, who, in turn, have been influenced by the ablest of their peers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan, Vol. 2: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese J A P A N farmer's instinct guided him correctly. His farm was capricious. Its yield varied largely owing to causes beyond his control. That the tax levied upon him should vary correspondingly, seemed just and natural, and in practice the principle received recognition from his tax masters. A money payment, on the contrary, must tend to assume a character of fixity. He would be required to deliver up so many strings of cash or so many pieces of silver instead of so many bushels of grain or so many bundles of silk. Thus the vicissitudes of his agricultural life would gradually pass beyond the range of his ruler's sympathies. He wisely preferred the patriarchal custom of contributing to the State a yearly quota of his actual produce, and the State refrained from enforcing the more civilised, though less paternal, system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Japan: A Record of Modern Life in the Island Empire In the following letters, written during a three years' residence in Tokyo, no method was followed beyond the interests and the fancy of the moment; no detailed description was attempted of Japan, her history and her customs and her philosophies. In the times when every foreigner saw the same sights in the Island Empire, obtained the same stereotyped glimpses of the people's life, and was contented with the half-comprehended information given by his guide, it was easy, and alas! fashionable, to describe the "toy country" and its "fairylike" inhabitants with glib security in large print. Those times are gone for ever. Japan has set the doors of her secret shrines ajar, so that we can at any rate take the first step in wisdom, and realise how little we know. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan Today All the more intense for this age-long re pression was the activity that immediately ensued when the crust was broken, finally, in 1854. The Japanese is a born Yankee; monastic life does not become him. He had needed, however, precisely that strong self control that came from the schooling of Buddhism. He now realized with the flash of instinct that he had finally come into his own. The ozone of the West filled his lungs. He breathed full and deep, then leaped with great bounds straight into the thick of things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
