Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of James Hepburn: Earl of Bothwell Professor Schiern has won for himself a distinguished name as an historical investigator. His Nyere Historiske Studier, though hardly known in this country, hold a high place on the Continent. The largest of these, his Monograph on Bothwell, is represented by R. Pauli in a recent article of his on Mary (Historische Zeitschrift, herausg. von H. v. Sybel, Neue Folge vi. 213), along with Dr. Hill Burton's History of Scotland, "as bringing no less honour on the science of history in our day by its trustworthy researches." It is equally favourably noticed by Professor Gaedeke of Heidelberg in a work on the same subject. In its English form it is hoped that it may be no less acceptable as a valuable contribution to the illustration of a most interesting period of Scottish History. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1882 edition. Excerpt: ... quet, in his own house, when the miserable boy-king was a corpse. If disinterested and impartial men of ability ever rewrite the history of this time, Murray will not stand forth as a model worthy of imitation, any more than some political magnates in this country who have learned to pull the wires and command the "bar'ls" of their accomplices and dupes. Murray was a character which is not confined to his era. It is "for all time." Bothwell was a man of his own time, impossible at plosion, without being singed," is simply laughable. A second, which Hosack (i. 268) mentions, along with the only true one, maintains, on the ground of a letter of W. Drury, is, that the King and his page Taylor were first strangled in the chamber, and then carried out of doors. This is quite as untenable, for, apart from the consideration that such a murder scene in the house would have woke up the servants, the murderers, in a business so pressing for haste, would hardly have taken the trouble to drag the bodies of the murdered eighty ells away from the house in the garden. The circumstance that the fur mantle and slippers of the King, as also some pieces of clothing belonging to Taylor, were lying not far from the corpses, proves that these articles were hurriedly taken up at the flight, and in the struggle were torn from them or lost; for to assume that the pieces of clothing which the murdered persons had on were not strewed about the garden until after the struggle would be contrary to sense. Thus the King Henry was murdered, a sacrifice to the Calvinistic nobles-party to the revenge of the Riccio murderers, as well as to his own disrespectful behavior to the magnates of Scotland, with whom he should rather have sought sympathy and reconciliation than to...

Download or read book The Challenge to the Crown written by Robert Stedall and published by Book Guild Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Queen of Scots: Catholic martyr or manipulative femme fatale On 10 February 1567, conspirators bent on killing Henry, Lord Darnley, King-Consort of Mary Queen of Scots successfully razed his Edinburgh residence at Kirk o' Field in a huge explosion. Soon afterwards, Darnley's partially-clothed body was discovered in a nearby orchard, strangled to death by an unknown assailant. Rumours of Mary's involvement in his murder quickly surfaced. Placards across Edinburgh implied that she had provoked the Earl of Bothwell into killing her husband in a crime of passion. This became more plausible when she tried to avoid having to prosecute him for the murder, and subsequently married him, encouraged by her most senior Protestant nobles. While Mary's motives for the marriage might be explained by her need for his protection, those of the Nobility who had encourage it are confusing. Why would they want a union, which would inevitably place Bothwell, a man they hated, as head of government? Was their motif to associate her in the murder plot? Mary's involvement in Darnley's murder has remained one of the great historical mysteries. Genealogist and author Robert Stedall has spent ten years researching the inter-marriages within Scottish peerage to provide an explanation for their motives in removing Mary from the throne. In this first volume, of his two volume history of Mary and James, he explains in vivid detail the switching allegiances of the nobility, and can reveal for the first time, the gripping true story of Mary's downfall and imprisonment.

Book Mary Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley

Download or read book Mary Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley written by Alison Weir and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Alison Weir's Mary Boleyn. Handsome, accomplished, and charming, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, staked his claim to the English throne by marrying Mary Stuart, who herself claimed to be the Queen of England. It was not long before Mary discovered that her new husband was interested only in securing sovereign power for himself. Then, on February 10, 1567, an explosion at his lodgings left Darnley dead; the intrigue thickened after it was discovered that he had apparently been suffocated before the blast. After an exhaustive reevaluation of the source material, Alison Weir has come up with a solution to this enduring mystery. Employing her gift for vivid characterization and gripping storytelling, Weir has written one of her most engaging excursions yet into Britain’s bloodstained, power-obsessed past.
