In addition the Bishop's mind was strongly conservative in character, so that it was most difficult for him suddenly to realise that his Letters Patent gave him no powers; and he leant upon them to his own hurt: but the trouble that he suffered on that account was overruled to promote the welfare of the Church. These words of Dean Green were spoken in the ful ness of time, nearly forty years after the trial of Dr. Colenso.
