Book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Ewald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Widely proclaimed a classic work of Christian faith, Life of Christ has been hailed as the most eloquent of Fulton J. Sheen's many books. The fruit of many years of reflection, prayer, and research, it is a dramatic and moving recounting of the birth, life, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Christ, and a passionate portrait of the God-Man, the teacher, the healer, and, most of all, the Savior, whose promise has sustained humanity for two millenia. With his customary insight and reverence, Sheen interprets the Scripture and describes Christ not only in historical perspective but also in exciting and contemporary terms -- seeing in Christ's life both modern parallels and timeless lessons. His thoughtful, probing analysis provides new insight into well-known Gospel events. An appealing blend of philosophy, history, and biblical exegesis, from the best-known and most-loved American Catholic leader of the twentieth century, Life of Christ has long been a source of inspiration and guidance. For those seeking to better understand the message of Jesus Christ, this vivid retelling of the greatest story ever lived is a must-read.

Book The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by William Boothby Selbie and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Now the first appetite man had in order to his great end was, to be as perfectas he could, that is, to be as like the best thing 'he knew as his nature and condition would permitd. And although by Adam's fancy and affection to his wife, and by God's appointing fmit for him, we see the lower appetites were first provided for; yet the first appetite which man had, as he distinguishes from lower creatures, was to be like God, (for by that the devil tempted him, ) and in order to that he had naturally sufficient instruments and abilities. For although by being abused with the devil's sophistry he chose an incompetent instrument, yet because it is naturally certain that love is the greatest assimilation of the object and the faculty, Adam by loving God might very well approach nearer Him according as he could. And it was natural to Adam to love God, who was his father, his creator, the fountain of all good to him, and of excellency in Himself; and whatsoever is understood to be such, it is as natural for us to love, and we do it for the same reasons, for which we love any thing else; and we cannot love for any other reason but for ione or both these in their proportion apprehended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bethlehem to Olivet: The Life of Jesus Christ Yet in no portion of the life of Jesus Christ is there really greater glory than in His birth. Nothing showed more love for the world than His condescending to be born. We should say that the heart of the gospel was the cross, but the first act of redemption was the Incarnation, when the Son of God emptied Himself of His divine attributes and entered human life in all the feebleness and helplessness of infancy. In its reveal ing of love and grace, the cradle of Jesus is as marvellous as His cross. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Christ of the Forty Days

Download or read book The Christ of the Forty Days written by A.B. Simpson and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-02 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, The Christ of the Forty Days, A.B. Simpson tells of the overwhelming experiences of the risen Christ. A.B. Simpson scripturally tells of the 40 days between Christ's resurrection and ascension, His appearance many times to His disciples, His teaching them about the nature of discipleship and His own divine nature and power they need to "go into all the world." In The Christ of the 40 Days, it is with this same power, that A.B. Simpson affirms is no less needed today to accomplish God's work today in all the world. The Christ of the Forty Days is a triumphant book of overpowering declaration and peace. He wins, He has defeated the aggressor, and Christ has been declared the victor! Christ is not an untouchable unapproachable Christ but is the opposite, knowing that we need Him and allows Himself to be a truly understanding Christ. He is "able to 'sympathize with our weaknesses' and ready to help us in our times of need." But he will also teach us during these times of trials and stress. He even took the opportunity to challenge his disciples during this most stressful time in their lives to "go into all the world and preach the gospel," sending them a clear message of that their real work had just started. The Christ of the Forty Days was originally published in 1883.

Download or read book Outlines of the Life of Christ Classic Reprint written by W. Sanday and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the Life of Christ In preparing to issue a second edition of this little book, the writer has been very conscious that it represents, not only the general position but the position in his own mind of the years 1898-1899 rather than of 1905. It was explained in the Preface to the First Edition that he deliberately abstained from attempting to bring the book really up to date. His reasons for this abstention were two: partly because such advances as he is able to make proceed as a rule by steps, and it seemed better that the steps should be allowed to stand out distinctly than that they should be confused and obliterated; and partly, it seemed, that the great amount of time that would have been taken up in re-casting and adapting the old work would be better employed upon the larger undertaking which is promised for the future. It seemed better to look forward than to look backward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
