Book Tortured Soul

Download or read book Tortured Soul written by Marley Brant and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those interested in the history of the infamous Younger Brothers of Missouri know eldest brother Cole’s story. Or at least they think they do. Cole told it enough times. Yet his autobiography, his dozens of interviews, and the stories he told to his friends and family members unfortunately tell a story quite different from researched history of the same times and events. John and Bob died young and never had the opportunity to tell their side of it all. And brother Jim remained silent. Until now. Tortured Soul: Jim Younger in His Own Words finally reveals Jim’s memories, thoughts, and opinions. Although Jim’s recollections are also mired in selective memories and a certain distortion brought about by the passage of time, a damaged psyche, and a need to protect himself and those he loved, the story Jim tells is based on his history and his desire to set Cole’s tall tales in their proper perspective.

Book The Desolation of a Tortured Soul

Download or read book The Desolation of a Tortured Soul written by George Colby Hoffman and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My story begins in my home state of Maryland, where I was the youngest of three children. From my earliest memories, I was the victim of severe abuse at the hands of my birth father, which I endured throughout my adolescent years. During this time I was visited by two angels who have accompanied me my entire life. They told me that I would suffer many things and be hated by all men, but if I kept my faith in God, I would have a special place in heaven. Once my mother left my birth father, she moved us to her mother's house in Washington, D.C. Then my mother married my second father, who was from Germany. We moved back to Maryland, but he had a serious drinking problem and he committed suicide. She then married our third father and we moved to Florida, where he too became abusive. When our grandmother died, we moved back to Maryland. My third stepfather continually beat me. It became so bad, I had to live in the woods in the winter and eat out of trash cans. After I got a job, my mother took most of my paycheck for her husband's drinking and gambling money. This story of extreme child abuse promises to take you on a journey through the eyes of a child as the victim, to the young adult as the survivor. My sole purpose and motivation is to help child abuse victims and help those more fortunate to understand the victims! First-time author George Colby Hoffman now lives in Florida. His next book is titled From Exercise to Competitive Bodybuilding for the over 50. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/GeorgeColbyHoffman

Book The Tortured Soul Trilogy

Download or read book The Tortured Soul Trilogy written by C. J. Cassidy and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2011-05-05 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Tortured Soul Trilogy of Pain and Pleasure” is a raw and intimate inside look at the trials and tribulations of three women, Tobey Oceanside, Jennifer X. Jones and Katherine Stark. Adapted and edited from C.J Cassidy's previous novels, this loosely biographical account details the events that these three amazing women have experienced in both their separate and overlapping lives. Brutal and honest, yet erotic and sensual, the novel takes a no holds barred look into their private world of fetishes and sexual desires. Each had crosses that they had to bear and each found absolution in the most unexpected places. A must read for anyone who has their own demons to exorcise. The author is able to express their pain and heartache in a way that many of his readers have related to. Some readers have actually freed themselves of their own bonds of abuse because of these heroines. Not for the faint of heart, I dare you to try to put it down after you've begun to read it!

Book excerpt: Back in the car and heading to Joe’s place, Joe noticed a Bible sitting between them in the seat. Grace detected his glance: “Do you read the Good Book often?” she asked Joe. “No ma’am; not since I was a little boy,” Joe replied through a yawn. “Well, if you don’t have one you can have mine,” she told him with a cheery grin. Joe was bemused. “No, that’s okay. I have one. My mom got it for me when I was six years old.” Grace looked at him. “And you still have it? That’s amazing.” Joe didn’t understand what was so amazing about it. “It’s in a box somewhere.” They were pulling into the apartment complex as Grace said, “I learn something new about God every time I read the Word.” Undoing his seatbelt Joe mumbled, “I know all I need to know about God.” Joe Morgan wakes up from nightmares about the day in church when he was ten years old and the pastor yelled about a sin that can’t be forgiven. Since then, he has left the idea of God far behind, much more concerned with taking care of his self than with running after a Being who damns His creatures to hell. Joe lives the small town life, going to the same bar after work every week with his friend Ray and holding back his feelings for his coworker, Nicole. He’s too caught up in the relationship they already have to risk pushing it into romance. What Joe doesn’t know is that everything is about to change—what he thinks about Nicole, about himself and most of all, about God. How can a stolen truck and two men in the hospital change Joe’s humdrum life? Read Tortured Soul to find out.

Book The Torture Letters

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laurence Ralph
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2020-01-15
  • ISBN : 022672980X
  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book The Torture Letters written by Laurence Ralph and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torture is an open secret in Chicago. Nobody in power wants to acknowledge this grim reality, but everyone knows it happens—and that the torturers are the police. Three to five new claims are submitted to the Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission of Illinois each week. Four hundred cases are currently pending investigation. Between 1972 and 1991, at least 125 black suspects were tortured by Chicago police officers working under former Police Commander Jon Burge. As the more recent revelations from the Homan Square “black site” show, that brutal period is far from a historical anomaly. For more than fifty years, police officers who took an oath to protect and serve have instead beaten, electrocuted, suffocated, and raped hundreds—perhaps thousands—of Chicago residents. In The Torture Letters, Laurence Ralph chronicles the history of torture in Chicago, the burgeoning activist movement against police violence, and the American public’s complicity in perpetuating torture at home and abroad. Engaging with a long tradition of epistolary meditations on racism in the United States, from James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time to Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me, Ralph offers in this book a collection of open letters written to protesters, victims, students, and others. Through these moving, questing, enraged letters, Ralph bears witness to police violence that began in Burge’s Area Two and follows the city’s networks of torture to the global War on Terror. From Vietnam to Geneva to Guantanamo Bay—Ralph’s story extends as far as the legacy of American imperialism. Combining insights from fourteen years of research on torture with testimonies of victims of police violence, retired officers, lawyers, and protesters, this is a powerful indictment of police violence and a fierce challenge to all Americans to demand an end to the systems that support it. With compassion and careful skill, Ralph uncovers the tangled connections among law enforcement, the political machine, and the courts in Chicago, amplifying the voices of torture victims who are still with us—and lending a voice to those long deceased.

Book Sick Souls Healthy Minds

Download or read book Sick Souls Healthy Minds written by John Kaag and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a compelling introduction to the life-affirming philosophy of William James. In 1895, William James, the father of American philosophy, delivered a lecture entitled Is Life Worth Living? It was no theoretical question for James, who had contemplated suicide during an existential crisis as a young man a quarter century earlier. Indeed, as John Kaag writes, James's entire philosophy, from beginning to end, was geared to save a life, his life and that's why it just might be able to save yours, too. THis is an introduction to James's life and thought that shows why the founder of pragmatism and empirical psychology - and an inspiration for Alcoholics Anonymous - can still speak so directly and profoundly to anyone struggling to make a life worth living. Kaag tells how James's experiences as one of what he called the sick-souled, those who think that life might be meaningless, drove him to articulate an ideal of healthy-mindedness an attitude toward life that is open, active, and hopeful, but also realistic about its risks. In fact, all of James's pragmatism, resting on the idea that truth should be judged by its practical consequences for our lives, is a response to, and possible antidote for, crises of meaning that threaten to undo many of us at one time or another. Along the way, Kaag also movingly describes how his own life has been endlessly enriched by James. Eloquent, inspiring, and filled with insight, this may be the smartest and most important self-help book you'll ever read.

Book What Went Wrong

Download or read book What Went Wrong written by Judy Norris and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2012-12 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To a certain extent, the story of Robby's life and death is a mystery. No therapist was able to offer a definitive diagnosis. Robby's personality, so charismatic one moment, so irrational the next, defied categorizing. His downward spiral was inexorable and inexplicable. When he finally lost his battle with mental illness, it was as if a grey shroud had been pulled over my family's world. This tragedy was incomprehensible to me and made me look deep inside my soul to try to find some answers. Art provides perspective and insight. It helps people work out their feelings creatively. I did not realize it at the time, but the paintings I did during this period were duplicating his journey from the real world into one of confusion and madness. When I found Robby's journals it was evident that he was able to recognize what was happening to him. I spent weeks reading and rereading Robby's writings and comparing them with my artwork. There was an almost ethereal connection. It was then that I made the commitment to write this book and try to explain the deep relationship between a mother and her son by telling his story through the twin lenses of my painting and his writing. This book probes deeper into the events of Robby's life and death. I want to explore questions such as: How can a happy, normal boy become such a tortured soul? Why did he become obsessed with Orthodox Judaism and what prevented the psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers from helping him? Why wasn't the love of his parents, siblings, other family members and friends, enough to save him?
