The following year he moved to Salt Lake City and was soon called on a mission to the Society Islands in the South Pacific where the natives threatened to burn him at the stake. In the early 1860s he undertook a mission to Great Britain but soon after his return suffered a severe accident which resulted in the amputation of a leg.
