Book excerpt: This is about the extraordinary lives of two people who fell in love on the cusp of WWII. They secretly married after the war started and survived three wars while raising a family of five. Clara and Warren married while he was in the Marine Corps’ flight training. Over thirty years of highly decorated marine service, Warren flew thirty different aircraft and survived scores of combat missions and close calls in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. What saw Warren through the darkest hours of three wars and Clara through lonely and extended separations while taking care of five kids were their dedication and love. Warren would always come home, and Clara would always be there. And after seventy-five years of marriage, that holds true today. Affectionately known by friends and family as the General and the Colonel, Clara and Warren’s memoir is an inspiring, remarkable story of love and war—a journey through life.

There is no disputing the impact of this revelatory collection.” —BookPage From the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and New York Times bestselling author, a stunning and personally curated selection of her work across the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist and MacArthur Fellow Lynsey Addario has spent the last two decades bearing witness to the world’s most urgent humanitarian and human rights crises. Traveling to the most dangerous and remote corners to document crucial moments such as Afghanistan under the Taliban immediately before and after the 9/11 attacks, Iraq following the US-led invasion and dismantlement of Saddam Hussein’s government, and western Sudan in the aftermath of the genocide in Darfur, she has captured through her photographs visual testimony not only of war and injustice but also of humanity, dignity, and resilience. In this compelling collection of more than two hundred photographs, Addario’s commitment to exposing the devastating consequences of human conflict is on full display. Her subjects include the lives of female members of the military, as well as the trauma and abuse inflicted on women in male-dominated societies; American soldiers rescuing comrades in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan, and Libyan opposition troops trading fire in Benghazi. Interspersed between her commanding and arresting images are personal journal entries and letters, as well as revelatory essays from esteemed writers such as Dexter Filkins, Suzy Hansen, and Lydia Polgreen. A powerful and singular work from one of the most brilliant and influential photojournalists working today, Of Love & War is a breathtaking record of our complex world in all its inescapable chaos, conflict, and beauty.

Book It s What I Do

Download or read book It s What I Do written by Lynsey Addario and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An unflinching memoir . . . [that] offers insight into international events and the challenges faced by the journalists who capture them.” —The Washington Post War photographer Lynsey Addario’s memoir is the story of how the relentless pursuit of truth, in virtually every major theater of war in the twenty-first century, has shaped her life. What she does, with clarity, beauty, and candor, is to document, often in their most extreme moments, the complex lives of others. It’s her work, but it’s much more than that: it’s her singular calling. Lynsey Addario was just finding her way as a young photographer when September 11 changed the world. One of the few photojournalists with experience in Afghanistan, she gets the call to return and cover the American invasion. She decides to set out across the world, face the chaos of crisis, and make a name for herself. Addario finds a way to travel with a purpose. She photographs the Afghan people before and after the Taliban reign, the civilian casualties and misunderstood insurgents of the Iraq War, as well as the burned villages and countless dead in Darfur. She exposes a culture of violence against women in the Congo and tells the riveting story of her headline-making kidnapping by pro-Qaddafi forces in the Libyan civil war. As a woman photojournalist determined to be taken as seriously as her male peers, Addario fights her way into a boys’ club of a profession. Rather than choose between her personal life and her career, Addario learns to strike a necessary balance. In the man who will become her husband, she finds at last a real love to complement her work, not take away from it, and as a new mother, she gains an all the more intensely personal understanding of the fragility of life. Watching uprisings unfold and people fight to the death for their freedom, Addario understands she is documenting not only news but also the fate of societies. It’s What I Do is more than just a snapshot of life on the front lines; it is witness to the human cost of war.

But when she tanks the SATs, her automatic assumptions about going to college don't appear to be so automatic anymore. She determines that her only hope for college admission is to win the election for student body president. When she brashly bets her classmate Logan that she can go two weeks without uttering a single insult, Samantha immediately realizes that she may have bitten off more than she can chew. And when her current boyfriend dumps her, less than three weeks before the prom, it couldn't be a worse time to be forced to keep her opinions to herself. Finding a new boyfriend will be a challenge now that Logan shadows her every move, hoping to catch her slipping back into her old ways. Samantha is determined to win the election and find a dream date for the prom, no matter what it takes. After all . . . all's fair in love and war (and high school!).

Download or read book Love and War written by Tom Digby and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideas of masculinity and femininity become sharply defined in war-reliant societies, resulting in a presumed enmity between men and women. This so-called "battle of the sexes" is intensified by the use of misogyny to encourage men and boys to conform to the demands of masculinity. These are among Tom Digby's fascinating insights shared in Love and War, which describes the making and manipulation of gender in militaristic societies and the sweeping consequences for men and women in their personal, romantic, sexual, and professional lives. Drawing on cross-cultural comparisons and examples from popular media, including sports culture, the rise of "gonzo" and "bangbus" pornography, and "internet trolls," Digby describes how the hatred of women and the suppression of empathy are used to define masculinity, thereby undermining relations between women and men—sometimes even to the extent of violence. Employing diverse philosophical methodologies, he identifies the cultural elements that contribute to heterosexual antagonism, such as an enduring faith in male force to solve problems, the glorification of violent men who suppress caring emotions, the devaluation of men's physical and emotional lives, an imaginary gender binary, male privilege premised on the subordination of women, and the use of misogyny to encourage masculine behavior. Digby tracks the "collateral damage" of this disabling misogyny in the lives of both men and women, but ends on a hopeful note. He ultimately finds the link between war and gender to be dissolving in many societies: war is becoming slowly de-gendered, and gender is becoming slowly de-militarized.

Book excerpt: 'You live in a love story set in the midst of a very real war...' What Wild at Heart did for men, and Captivating did for women, LOVE & WAR will do for married couples everywhere. John and Stasi Eldredge have contributed quintessential works on Christian spirituality for men and women separately but now they turn their focus to the incredible union between those two forces - marriage. With refreshing openness, the Eldredges discuss their own marriage and the insights they've gained from the challenges they've faced. Both speak independently to the reader about what they've learnt, giving their guidance personal immediacy and balanced male and female perspectives. John and Stasi begin LOVE & WAR with an obvious but necessary acknowledgement: marriage is fabulously hard. For every minute of happy delirium, there are equal amounts of disappointment and frustration and a sense that we've been deluded, that this isn't the marriage we dreamed of. Once we admit this, we are free to accept the great adventure of marriage; working together through strength gained from our own individual relationships with God, rather than looking to each other for happiness.

I walked the roads of Hell until I figured out that the only way to survive was to exist under a cloak of darkness--to deal with the devil himself. It was the only way to escape the pain, the torment. But the nightmares are still very real. They'll never leave me alone. The shadows of solitude follow me wherever I go.Weapons--they can be anything I need them to be. Unlike people in my life, they are predictable, dependable. Without any effort they can cause so much destruction, but also so much peace. Through the internal chaos, the anger that won't cease, and the constant noise, everything is silenced with the pull of the trigger.Ink--I've loved it since I can remember. It defines me. It's my release. When I feel like I'm about to blow I turn to the needle. It is the one high I need. I brand people. It's what I do. Kross Brannon is the best there is when it comes to tattoos. The success of my company proves it. But I never teach. Those that work for me learn from someone else. I'm a solo artist. Always have been and always will be...but then I looked up and saw her, standing in my shop, beautiful, tattooed, and her soul screaming for me to reach out. She was a force of nature I couldn't turn away. That's the moment everything started falling into place...
