Excerpt: ... one after the other, like a feu de joie, the instant the priest has said the benediction. A greater gun is often put in the middle or end, according to the fancy of different churches. One night at Catania I heard a drum and two clarionets, followed by a rabble, shouting and throwing up squibs and fireworks. 'What is this?' 'Per la gloria della Vergine.' ' Della Vergine? ' ' Signer, si, della immaculate.' When I reached Syracuse, it was the first of thirteen days' festa in honour of Santa Lucia. 600 ' maschi' were let off in the piazza. As the Sicilian gentry are great sportsmen, they send their steeds to face the battery, for if they stand this they will not easily flinch from a gun. So the groom rides up, and the town boys stand behind with whips and switches to prevent a retreat. As they stand a good chance of a kick, and hope to see the grooms thrown, they are never tired of this sport. The horse rears and plunges his nose in the smoke, with the noisy mob behind, and I could not help thinking what religious associations the lads must acquire in regard to ' maschi.' From Lentini to MelilJi. I had a letter to the vicar, a brother-member of the Geronian Society. His invitation to sleep there was such as I did not choose to accept. The room I got (for inn there was none) was a queer place, and everything to be begged and borrowed but the bed. Next day I found that a crater discovered by the priest was a circular valley cut out of limestone strata, with three veins of volcanic rock through them. I must write to Dr. Gemellaro, for if he publishes this in the transactions of a Society at the foot of Etna, it will be a joke against them they will never get over. Went to Sortino, to see grottoes of Pentalica, where a vast population once...

Book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 7 1858 1859

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 7 1858 1859 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters in this volume cover two of the most momentous years in Darwin's life. Begun in 1856 and the fruit of twenty years of study and reflection, Darwin's manuscript on the species question was a little more than half finished, and at least two years from publication, when in June 1858 Darwin unexpectedly received a letter and a manuscript from Alfred Russel Wallace indicating that he too had independently formulated a theory of natural selection. The letters detail the various stages in the preparation of what was to become one of the world's most famous works: Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, published by John Murray in November 1859. They reveal the first impressions of Darwin's book given by his most trusted confidants, and they relate Darwin's anxious response to the early reception of his theory by friends, family members, and prominent naturalists. This volume provides the capstone to Darwin's remarkable efforts for more than two decades to solve one of nature's greatest riddles - the origin of species.

Book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 29 1881

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 29 1881 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 1242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically. In 1881, Darwin published his final book, The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms. He reflected on reactions to his previous book, The Power of Movement in Plants, and worked on two papers for the Linnean Society on the action of carbonate of ammonia on plants. In this year, Darwin's elder brother, Erasmus, died, and a second grandchild, also named Erasmus, was born.

Book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 2 1837 1843

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 2 1837 1843 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the complete edition of The Correspondence of Charles Darwin. For the first time full authoritative texts of Darwin's letters are available, edited according to modern textual editorial principles and practice. The letters in this volume were written during the seven years following Darwin's return to England from the Beagle voyage. It was a period of extraordinary activity and productivity in which he became recognised as a naturalist of outstanding ability, as an author and editor, and as a professional man with official responsibilities in several scientific organisations. During these years he published two books and fifteen papers and also organised and superintended the publication of the Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle, for which he described the locations of the fossils and the habitats and behaviour of the living species he had collected. Busy as he was with scientific activities, Darwin found time to re-establish family ties and friendships, and to make new friends among the naturalists with whom his work brought him into close contact. In November 1838, two years after his return Darwin became engaged to his cousin, Emma Wedgwood, whom he subsequently married.

Download or read book Paleoclimatology written by Colin P. Summerhayes and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-06-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life on our planet depends upon having a climate that changes within narrow limits – not too hot for the oceans to boil away nor too cold for the planet to freeze over. Over the past billion years Earth’s average temperature has stayed close to 14-15°C, oscillating between warm greenhouse states and cold icehouse states. We live with variation, but a variation with limits. Paleoclimatology is the science of understanding and explaining those variations, those limits, and the forces that control them. Without that understanding we will not be able to foresee future change accurately as our population grows. Our impact on the planet is now equal to a geological force, such that many geologists now see us as living in a new geological era – the Anthropocene. Paleoclimatology describes Earth’s passage through the greenhouse and icehouse worlds of the past 800 million years, including the glaciations of Snowball Earth in a world that was then free of land plants. It describes the operation of the Earth’s thermostat, which keeps the planet fit for life, and its control by interactions between greenhouse gases, land plants, chemical weathering, continental motions, volcanic activity, orbital change and solar variability. It explains how we arrived at our current understanding of the climate system, by reviewing the contributions of scientists since the mid-1700s, showing how their ideas were modified as science progressed. And it includes reflections based on the author’s involvement in palaeoclimatic research. The book will transform debate and set the agenda for the next generation of thought about future climate change. It will be an invaluable course reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students in geology, climatology, oceanography and the history of science.
