Book Life Its Nature Origin Development and the Psychical Related to the Physical Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life Its Nature Origin Development and the Psychical Related to the Physical Classic Reprint written by Salem Wilder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life, Its Nature, Origin, Development, and the Psychical Related to the Physical Certain imperfectly understood teachings of nature have been perverted by a class of eminent men, and some one should restate these teachings from a different point of view. The writer has endeavored not to state as fact what does not rest upon good authority; but in writing What follows he assumes a serious responsibility. In the border lands of theory and speculation the lines of truth are not always clearly defined. To mislead is easy, and to mislead in important lines of thought may do harm; yet men must bear the responsibility of their honest convictions. Download or read book What Is Physical Life Its Origin and Nature written by William Hanna Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is Physical Life, Its Origin and Nature Discussion about the origin and development of life upon this globe cannot now be discountenanced nor prevented. It is a subject too interesting and too important to be ignored by any intelligent person. Being at present actually the leading subject of scientific investigation, the general reader should become acquainted at least with the principles of that investigation, enough to enable him to avoid many prevalent misconceptions about the conclusions so far reached. Previous to our own age, views on this question were based either on speculation or on tradition. They now claim to be based entirely on observation. Book Radium and the Secret of Life

Download or read book Radium and the Secret of Life written by Luis A. Campos and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before the hydrogen bomb indelibly associated radioactivity with death, many chemists, physicists, botanists, and geneticists were excited thinking that radium held the key to the secret of life. Luis Campos examines the many and varied connections between early radioactivity research and understandings of vitality, both scientific and popular, in the first half of the twentieth century. As some physicists and chemists early on described the wondrous new element and its radioactive brethren in lifelike terms ( decay, half-life, and frequent reference to the natural selection and evolution of the elements), many biologists of the period eagerly sought to bring radium into the biological fold. They did so with experiments aimed at elucidating some of the most basic phenomena of life, including metabolism and mutation, and often saw in these phenomena properties that in turn reminded them of the new element. These initially provocative links between radium and life proved remarkably productive in experimental terms and ultimately led to key biological insights into the origin of life, the nature of mutation, and the structure of the gene. "Radium and the Secret of Life" traces the half-life of this connection between the living and the radioactive, while also exploring the approach to history that emerges when one follows a trail of associations that, asymptotically, never quite disappears."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biophilia" is the term coined by Edward O. Wilson to describe what he believes is humanity's innate affinity for the natural world. In his landmark book Biophilia, he examined how our tendency to focus on life and lifelike processes might be a biologically based need, integral to our development as individuals and as a species. That idea has caught the imagination of diverse thinkers. The Biophilia Hypothesis brings together the views of some of the most creative scientists of our time, each attempting to amplify and refine the concept of biophilia. The variety of perspectives -- psychological, biological, cultural, symbolic, and aesthetic -- frame the theoretical issues by presenting empirical evidence that supports or refutes the hypothesis. Numerous examples illustrate the idea that biophilia and its converse, biophobia, have a genetic component: fear, and even full-blown phobias of snakes and spiders are quick to develop with very little negative reinforcement, while more threatening modern artifacts -- knives, guns, automobiles -- rarely elicit such a response people find trees that are climbable and have a broad, umbrella-like canopy more attractive than trees without these characteristics people would rather look at water, green vegetation, or flowers than built structures of glass and concrete The biophilia hypothesis, if substantiated, provides a powerful argument for the conservation of biological diversity. More important, it implies serious consequences for our well-being as society becomes further estranged from the natural world. Relentless environmental destruction could have a significant impact on our quality of life, not just materially but psychologically and even spiritually.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of Life: Its Physical Basis and Definition In presenting this work to the judgment of my critics, as the result in part of my studies for some years past, in some respects in outline whilst in others in detail, and more so perhaps than it was my intention at first to make it, two points should be borne in mind. In the first place, it is intended that the chapters which deal with phosphorescence may with advantage be omitted by those who are not particularly interested in such matters, since they may tend to divert the attention from the real points at issue, if the mind is not specially familiar with physical conceptions. The reader who does not wish to be burdened with detail is therefore recommended to omit them, at any rate on the first reading, if the book should prove of sufficient interest to demand his perusal for a second time.
