Download or read book The Complete Guide to Boston Terriers written by Vanessa Richie and published by LP Media Inc. This book was released on 2020-05-25 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the American gentleman, the Boston Terrier always appears to be ready for sophisticated fun. But owning one can come with its own set of unique challenges for an owner who is unprepared for the quirks and personality of this loveable, but often mischievous breed. Written by experienced author and dog owner Vanessa Richie, The Complete Guide to Boston Terriers is an excellent overview of the breed, covering everything a new owner will need to know to successfully raise their BT. Plus, it contains information, tips, and advice from some of the top Boston Terrier breeders in the world. Be prepared to take on the challenges of owning a Boston Terrier by learning about: Picking the right Boston Terrier for your family and home Preparing to bring your BT home Boston Terrier health and wellness Integrating your new BT with your current pets Housetraining Boston Terrier socialization Training Nutrition Grooming Genetic health concerns common to Boston Terriers Caring for an aging Boston Terrier Generally considered a fantastic dog for first time dog families, the Boston Terrier has an incredibly friendly personality that makes him a great addition to any home. Socialization is fairly easy because the breed is naturally friendly. Training may be a bit more difficult, particularly housetraining, so do be prepared to put in a lot of extra patience and some extra time to get your puppy to the point where accidents become a thing of the past. They adore their people, though some are prone to choosing one favorite person, and it will be obvious as they will become like a shadow to their favorite person. This is also a breed that has a wide range of personalities, with some being bouncy and fun, while others are more dignified and mellow. What most of them have in common though is how much they enjoy spending time with the people in their lives. They are also easy to integrate into a home with other dogs, and even cats – as long as the cat doesn’t totally object to your new dog. The biggest drawback to the breed is their numerous genetic health issues. Part of the issues stem from the fact that the Boston Terrier has a short nose, which increases the number of issues with their large eyes and hampers their ability to breath as easily as dogs with longer snouts. They are also prone to bother allergies and stomach sensitivities, so you will need to be careful about what you feed your dog and how much the environment affects your pup. Most of the ailments are not life-threatening – they have a life expectancy between 13 and 15 years. They are also incredibly easy to groom with their short-haired coats.

Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Download or read book You Had Me at Pet Nat written by Rachel Signer and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the publisher of Pipette Magazine, discover a natural wine-soaked memoir about finding your passion—and falling in love. It was Rachel Signer's dream to be that girl: the one smoking hand-rolled cigarettes out the windows of her 19th-century Parisian studio apartment, wearing second-hand Isabel Marant jeans and sipping a glass of Beaujolais redolent of crushed roses with a touch of horse mane. Instead she was an under-appreciated freelance journalist and waitress in New York City, frustrated at always being broke and completely miserable in love. When she tastes her first pétillant-naturel (pét-nat for short), a type of natural wine made with no additives or chemicals, it sets her on a journey of self-discovery, both deeply personal and professional, that leads her to Paris, Italy, Spain, Georgia, and finally deep into the wilds of South Australia and which forces her, in the face of her "Wildman," to ask herself the hard question: can she really handle the unconventional life she claims she wants? Have you ever been sidetracked by something that turned into a career path? Did you ever think you were looking for a certain kind of romantic partner, but fell in love with someone wild, passionate and with a completely different life? For Signer, the discovery of natural wine became an introduction to a larger ethos and philosophy that she had long craved: one rooted in egalitarianism, diversity, organics, environmental concerns, and ancient traditions. In You Had Me at Pét-Nat, as Signer begins to truly understand these revolutionary wine producers upending the industry, their deep commitment to making their wine with integrity and with as little intervention as possible, she is smacked with the realization that unless she faces, head-on, her own issues with commitment, she will not be able to live a life that is as freewheeling, unpredictable, and singular as the wine she loves.

These spunky little dogs come in a variety of sizes, with the largest specimens reaching nearly thirty pounds in size and the smallest topping out at just ten pounds or so. They have three distinct coat types to choose from—smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired. This is a fearless little breed, developed hundreds of years ago in Germany to track and hunt animals that went to ground, like badgers, and pull them out of their dens. While the majority of Dachshund dogs today are pampered pets rather than independent hunters, they still retain both their high prey drive and their tenacity. The traits that made them great hunters can also make them somewhat difficult to train. With this thorough guidebook, you will discover everything you need to raise your Dachshund from an impulsive puppy into a confident and well-mannered adult dog. The Complete Guide to Dachshunds is your road map to unlocking your Doxie’s potential. You will learn what to do and what not to do to ensure your canine companion’s continuing good health, as well as tips and techniques for training the stubborn Dachshund. Whether you refer to your new fur baby as a wiener dog, sausage dog, Doxie, Dotson dog, or badger dog, one thing is certain: he will keep you busy! There’s something for beer novices and beer geeks alike.”––Ken Grossman, founder, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. “Erudite, encyclopedic, and enormously entertaining aren’t words you normally associate with beer, but The Beer Bible is no ordinary beer book. Download or read book Pit Bull Flower Power written by Sophie Gamand and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, pit bulls have been demonized by society and portrayed as hellhounds. They've become the most feared, hated, and abused of all companion animals. Some cities and even entire countries ban them, while the media persist in associating them with viciousness. This unjust reputation has sealed the fate of millions of dogs, who face prejudice around the world and languish in shelters, where they are the most euthanized. In America alone, hundreds of thousands of pit bulls are put to sleep every year. Since 2014, French photographer Sophie Gamand has been composing portraits of adoptable pit bulls from more than thirty shelters and rescues throughout the United States. Many had been waiting for years for a home. Adorning her models with handmade flower-crowns, Gamand tells each dog's story and celebrates their inherent personality, vulnerability, and individuality. Posted and shared widely on social media, the portraits--at once charming, candid, and deeply affecting--have not only led to hundreds of dogs finding loving, forever homes, but have also spurred efforts to destigmatize an animal whose reputation for violence says more about us than it does the character of the dogs themselves. Full of moving, honest, and inspiring stories of individual dogs and their lives (and deaths), Pit Bull Flower Power presents a vivid, beautifully composed cross-section of Gamand's extraordinary work. The book also serves as a testament to the caring people who work in animal rescue, the passion and dedication of those who provide homes for these animals, and the dignity, forbearance, and love of these dogs, who are at the mercy of humans.
Download or read book The Runaways of Missing Lake written by Tanya Fyfe and published by . This book was released on 2020-09 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke Houser and his friends enter their junior year at Missing Lake High School in rural western Montana under extremely unusual circumstances after a tremendous forest fire kept the community on edge for months. The memory of the fire permeates all aspects of everyone's lives, including those of the incredible secret dragon family who live up north. Luke makes a new canine friend through his step-mom's veterinary clinic and Chase plays an important role despite not being one of the family's beloved sled dogs. The silver dragon, Zagros has some serious news for his young Dragoneer that will impact the entire dragon realm, particularly the young ones, Helios and Cassiel. Luke has to process this information all while a crisis unfolds during one of Ms.Tanner's Sharing Sessions in English class. Luke and two of his best friends are suddenly involved in the frightening situation and it is one more time that Luke realizes how special it is to attend a smaller high school where just about everyone knows who you are. Luke's ability to be charming, thoughtful and funny once again endears him to his classmates even though he has to make choices that could jeopardize their meaningful relationships. These choices challenge the sometimes awkward sixteen-year-old but he cannot share them with anyone without risking the discovery of the magnificent dragons. Luke and his friends are very much teenagers and their experiences, frustrations and dialogues are relatable and even touching at times. Luke and his father are still training their Alaskan huskies and the dream to race this coming winter is very real. This is the fourth book in the Missing Lake series that follows a reluctantly intrepid young man's journey into adulthood with his family, friends, dogs, cats and dragons by his side.Tanya Fyfe has been creating the Missing Lake series for several years after publishing Lost and Found in Missing Lake in 2014. The talented illustrator, Ben Brick came on board for The Dragons of Missing Lake and Secrets Abound in Missing Lake. The series introduces a modern blended family living in rural Montana where they eventually get to meet a dragon family. The fantasy weaves in with the real life fictional story in a very believable way. This is a series of hope, love and friendship while also being a story about caring for others. It is about being more than just yourself, which comes at a crucial time in our planet's history.

Behaviorist, Shay Kelly shows you how to become your dog's best friend by providing simple, fun activities to spark their mind and enrich their life. A lack of mental stimulation is a leading contributory factor in dog behavioural problems. Ensuring that our dog's needs are met is the first step in avoiding and rectifying problematic behaviour. Shay's practical approach and behaviour knowledge combine in this critically acclaimed book, to deliver practical, kind, and scientific advice. ~ What Dr Susan Friedman says about the book: I am so happy to have Shay Kelly's book, "Canine Enrichment" to recommend to all animal caregivers. As I often say, animals are built to behave, not to be still; and, arranging the environment to facilitate meaningful behavior, that is, behavior that leads to strong positive reinforcers, is as necessary to behavioral well being as healthy food is to physical health. With this book, Mr. Kelly gives practical examples and ignites the imagination to result in endless possibilities to improve the lives of the learners in our care.~What Sara Sokol says about the book: Canine Enrichment: the book your dog needs you to read" is essential reading for any dog guardian who wants to provide their dog with the most satisfying, fun, and fulfilled life possible. Mr Kelly inspires and motivates the reader while educating them on the importance of providing enrichment to their canine companions. The result is a dog/human team who is physically, mentally, and emotionally fulfilled and behaviorally at their best.
