Book Life Inside the Church of Rome Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life Inside the Church of Rome Classic Reprint written by Francis Clare Cusack and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Inside the Church of Rome His book will be characterised by plain speaking, and contain a record of plain facts. I hesitated long and thought much before I began this work, because I knew how great its importance would be, and I did not forget that I shall have to answer to God for what I have written. I know that all the treachery and deceit of which I have been made the subject is the common, ordinary practice of the Church of Rome; and if my sufferings have been great, and if the treatment which I have received has been cruel, it has simply been because I was at the mercy of a power which knows no mercy, and which makes persecution a dogma of her Church. As I shall have occasion to mention my autobio graphy several times in the course of this work, I may at once refer the reader to the end of this volume for particulars of its contents. It may be well to state here that any one who reads Roman Catholic lives of Roman Catholic canonized saints, will find in them ample evidence of the persecuting spirit of the Roman Catholic Church. Every one of thosesaints whom the Roman Church now honours so highly, was in his or her lifetime made the subject of the bitterest opposition, and the victim of the most cruel persecution. Rome hated her own saints while they were living, but canonised them when they were dead. Rome need not boast of the good works which have been done in her Church, because they have been accomplished, for the most part, not because of the help of the Church, but in spite of its opposition. Would to God that the eyes of all mankind could be Opened to see Rome as she is! It has the power in many countries to trample on and crush the weak, because it Hatters and bribes the strong to act as its ally in evil, until the strong also become weak and then they, too, learn what are the tender mercies of this professedly Christian Church. Book Through the Eye of a Needle

Download or read book Through the Eye of a Needle written by Peter Brown and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping intellectual history of the role of wealth in the church in the last days of the Roman Empire Jesus taught his followers that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. Yet by the fall of Rome, the church was becoming rich beyond measure. Through the Eye of a Needle is a sweeping intellectual and social history of the vexing problem of wealth in Christianity in the waning days of the Roman Empire, written by the world's foremost scholar of late antiquity. Peter Brown examines the rise of the church through the lens of money and the challenges it posed to an institution that espoused the virtue of poverty and called avarice the root of all evil. Drawing on the writings of major Christian thinkers such as Augustine, Ambrose, and Jerome, Brown examines the controversies and changing attitudes toward money caused by the influx of new wealth into church coffers, and describes the spectacular acts of divestment by rich donors and their growing influence in an empire beset with crisis. He shows how the use of wealth for the care of the poor competed with older forms of philanthropy deeply rooted in the Roman world, and sheds light on the ordinary people who gave away their money in hopes of treasure in heaven. Through the Eye of a Needle challenges the widely held notion that Christianity's growing wealth sapped Rome of its ability to resist the barbarian invasions, and offers a fresh perspective on the social history of the church in late antiquity.

Book Daily Life through American History in Primary Documents 4 volumes

Download or read book Daily Life through American History in Primary Documents 4 volumes written by Randall M. Miller and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-12-12 with total page 1208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book, students, teachers, and general readers get a most important look at primary documents—essentially history's "first draft"—revealing rare insights into how American life in past eras really was, and also about how professional historians begin their work. Daily Life through American History in Primary Documents presents a large sweep of American history through the voices of the American people themselves. This multivolume work explores the daily lives of American people from colonial times to the present through primary documents that include diaries, letters, memoirs, speeches, sermons, pamphlets, and all manner of public and private writings from "the people." The emphasis is on the variety of people's experiences as they ordered and lived their daily lives. The cast includes Americans of every class and condition, men and women, parents and children, free and "unfree," native-born and immigrant. Hundreds of images further illustrate American life as it developed over more than four centuries and as Americans moved across a continent. Organized both chronologically and topically, this collection invites many uses by students, teachers, librarians, and anyone wanting to discover what counted in American lives at any one time and over time. Its focus on primary documents encourages readers of the volume to explore specific and critical events by taking a firsthand look at the actual documents from which those events draw historical meaning. The documents show Americans at work, at home, at play, in the public square, in places of worship, and on the move. As such, they perfectly complement the acclaimed Greenwood Encyclopedia of Daily Life in America and will enrich any American history, social science, and sociology classroom.
