Book My Life As a US Merchant Marine in World War II

Download or read book My Life As a US Merchant Marine in World War II written by Charles Hoffman and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-20 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This World War II US Merchant Marine memoir was written by Charles William Hoffman. This highly personal memoir of his days as a young man serving his country reflects the culture of that time. The US entry into WWII required immediate growth of US Merchant Marine capabilities. The Atlantic Ocean was a major strategic battle zone during WWII. The Merchant Marine participated in every landing operation by the US Marine Corps from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima. It took 15 tons of suppliers to support one soldier for one year at the front. During 1945 alone, the Merchant Mariners delivered 17 million pounds of cargo every hour, including ammunition, airplanes, fuel, PT boats and amphibious craft, tanks, jeeps, trucks, medicines, locomotives and food. Mariners delivered the goods when and where needed in every war theater.Charles W. Hoffman served his country on seven ships, including a United Nations mercy mission and a highly dangerous ammunition ship. He was 1 of only 7 who survived from his original group of 51 young men who left St. Louis, Missouri to serve their country by delivering the goods to serve all warfighters.

"Turbulent Seas" takes the reader back to the rousing American high sea memoirs that began 180 years ago with Richard Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast." From the mid-1960s until his retirement, Merchant Marine Captain Lance Orton led an adventurous life on ships that crossed the globe's oceans and served ports in wartime Vietnam, India, the old Soviet Union, Alaska, and beyond. Co-authors Orton and Professor Barnett Singer tell of Captain Orton's career in an engaging narrative that, at times, could serve as a script for an action-adventure movie. Book Turbulent Seas

Download or read book Turbulent Seas written by Lance Orton and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-05-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merriam Press Personal Chronicle 1. Second Edition (May 2012). Lance Orton's career in the American Merchant Marine, during which he experienced an interesting, hectic, and often dangerous life on the high seas, and in a variety of ports from the mid-1960s through to the mid-1980s. What to him were fascinatingly difficult human challenges began with his cadet days and from his earliest times on the water, then continued during his first voyage as a third officer, and through his appointment as one of the youngest American captains of a very large vessel-in fact, the largest American ship ever built at that time (late 1970s), "The Golden Endeavor," then classed as a supertanker, but later downgraded to "Baby Super." Lance sailed with colorful, crazy, but sometimes gifted maritime personnel, and fought off a number of life-threatening situations, including pirate attacks, knife fights on board ship, attempted poisonings (of me), etc. I also sailed to Vietnam in the years when a merchant mariner literally took his life in his hands doing so. I had to deal with accidents and near explosions on ships, due to volatile hydrocarbons and other material we carried, but also to human error. In this book you get the inside story. You also get a close view of American organizations both blessed and plagued by a variety of personalities, and especially, by the growing disease of bureaucratization and political maneuvering. And you will encounter a sad, yet comical Soviet Union before Gorbachev, where the secret police, inequities, and paranoia were rife. This is one man's story that will compel the your attention. Contents: * My Baptism at Sea with Captain Crofton; * A Young Cadet's Progress and Revolt; * First Voyage to India; * Strafing in Vietnam and American Rage; * Enter the Divine Element; * Incompetence and Tragedy; * To Russia with Vodka; * Back to American Scalawags; * Returning as Captain Orton to KGB Land; * Ships' Revolvers and Revolts; * Final Diagnosis-Lunacy on Board Ship!

Book Until The Sea Shall Free Them

Download or read book Until The Sea Shall Free Them written by Robert Frump and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1983, the freighter Marine Electric ran into a violent storm off the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Despite Force 10 conditions and fifty feet waves the crew were unconcerned: the ship had survived worse. But something was wrong, the ship was beginning to break up under them; gradually it began to go down by the head, then to capsize. Within two hours the crew were in the water in a desperate struggle for their lives. Their plight sparked one of the most dramatic air-sea rescues in maritime history. Only three of the 34 crew survived the night. The ship had sunk due to a serious structural defect. The chief mate Bob Cusick discovered that the owners had lost several other ships in similar circumstances to the Marine Electric, but the sinkings had been covered up. He decided to go after the company and they in turn rounded on him, the sole surviving officer. What follows is an epic and epochal court case that left none of the participants unscarred.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life on the Ocean: Being Sketches of Personal Experience in the United States Naval Service, the American and British Merchant Marine, and the Whaling Service But sitting at home, by the fireside, among his friends, there is nothing to remind him of his past life the incitement is wanting - the yarn can't be spun. Not being able, in any other way, to gratify the wishes of certain of my young friends, I have endeavored here to jot down such reminiscences as will not, it is trusted, prove entirely uninteresting. To give a sailor's impressions of a sailor's life, nothing extenuating, nor aught setting down in malice, has been the aim. Neither exaggerating its hardships - they do not need it - nor highly coloring its delights, whatever those may be, the very plainest truth has been thought sufficient for the purpose in view. These terrible disasters add up to be the greatest loss of life ever recorded at sea, but the stories of these ships have been lost from view. While everyone recognises the name Titanic, the names Cap Arcona, Goya, General von Steuben and Thielbek draw little more than blank stares. Claes-Göran Wetterholm brings the horror of these tragic events to life in this gripping study, first published in Swedish, as he collates the unknown stories of four major shipping disasters, the most terrible in history. Combining archive research with interviews with survivors and the relatives of those who died, Wetterholm vividly conveys his experiences of meeting many witnesses to a forgotten and horrifying piece of history.
