Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Canada In the following pages will be found some contributions towards the history of Canada and of the manners and customs of its inhabitants during the hundred years beginning October 5th, 1792. On that date my ancestor, Roger Conant, a graduate of Yale University, and a Massachusetts landowner, set foot on Canadian soil as a United Empire Loyalist. From him and from his descendants - handed down from father to son - there have come to me certain historical particulars which I regard as a trust and which I herewith give to the public. I am of the opinion that it is in such plain and unvarnished statements that future historians of our country will find their best materials, and I therefore feel constrained to do my share towards the task of supplying them. The population of Canada is but five and one-third millions, but who can tell what it will be in a few decades? Book Roughing It in the Bush Or Forest Life in Canada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Roughing It in the Bush Or Forest Life in Canada Classic Reprint written by Susanna Moodie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roughing It in the Bush, or Forest Life in Canada In the year 1832 I landed with my husband, J.W. Dunbar Moodie, in Canada. Mr. Moodie was the youngest son of Major Moodie, of Mellsetter, in che Orkney Islands; he was a lieutenant in the 21st regiment of Fusileers, and had been severely wounded in the nightattack upon Bergen-op-Zoom, in Holland. Not being overgifted with the good things of this world-the younger sons of old British families seldom are-he had, after mature deliberation, determined to try his fortunes in Canada, and settle upon the grant of 400 acres of land, ceded by the Government to officers upon half-pay. Emigration, in most cases-and ours was no exception to the general rule-is a matter of necessity, not of choice. It may, indeed, generally be regarded as an act of duty performed at the expense of personal enjoyment, and at the sacrifice of all those local attachments which stamp the scenes in which our childhood grew in imperishable characters upon the heart. Nor is it, until adversity has pressed hard upon the wounded spirit of the sons and daughters of old, but impoverished, families, that they can subdue their proud and rebellious feelings, and submit to make the trial. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Life and Resources, Vol. 6: August, 1908 UR magazine is now in its sixth year. Since that day in June, 1903, when the first copies of our first issue came in damp from the press and with mingled pride and misgivings were nervously turned over by those who had planned and produced its simple, unillustrated pages, much has happened in this great, young country of Canada. In looking back over the past and projecting one's thoughts into the years before us and our country, there are these thoughts prominent in our mind. It is a pride and satisfaction to us to have seen so 'much of what we have advocated in these pages carried successfully into e ect. Six years ago the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway was an idea only. We backed it from the first. The first map of the projected line ever published in'a paper appeared in this magazine. Today we know that hundreds of miles of track have been completed and that locomotives have begun to run on part of it. Book Wild Life in Canada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wild Life in Canada Classic Reprint written by Angus Buchanan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Life in Canada Canada, in a great belt that runs from sea to sea, across the southern territory of her dominion, is the civilised, rapidly growing country which we all know to-day. Therein, in out-of-the-way places where mankind pass not too often, there are still quantities of big game and fur-bearing animals and wild-fowl to delight the lover of nature and solitude. But it is not of such places that I write in this narrative - not of the outdoor places that are within reach of those who inhabit the populated south country of Canada; for the wanderings which it has been my good fortune to experience, and which henceforth I will endeavour to describe, were through a part of the great unpeopled North, which even today comprises more than half of the large Dominion of Canada. So great is the far north territory that there is many a hundred miles on which no white man has yet set foot, and even where the white man has been, in the distant interior near to the Barren Lands, in many cases the footprints have been so few that an old Indian inhabitant of a district could easily count those who had passed in a lifetime on his ten fingers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roughing It in the Bush, Vol. 2: Or, Life in Canada IT was a bright frosty morning when I bade adieu to the farm, the birthplace of my little Agnes, who, nestled beneath my cloak, was sweetly sleeping on my knee, unconscious of the long journey before us into the wilderness. The sun had not as yet risen. Anxious to get to our place of destination before dark, we started as early as we could. Our own fine team had been sold the day before for forty pounds; and one of our neighbours, a Mr. D was to convey us and our household goods to Douro for the sum of twenty dollars. During the week he had made several journeys, with furniture and stores. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Queen s and Canada Classic Reprint written by Robert Bruce Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen's and Canada Co-education, so far as university life in Canada is con cerned, began in Queen's. Women were admitted, to begin with, to the Faculty of Arts. The question then arose why they should not be allowed to study Medicine. The thing had not hitherto been done in Canada, but it was done here. The very novelty of the scheme attracted a singularly able group of women. There were, however, difficulties not a few in the carry ing on of a medical school for men and women where the schoolitself was small. Consequently, when the University of Toronto opened the doors of its medical faculty to women, Queen's decided to restrict its work in this field to men. The Extra-mural system, which has been of such benefit to teachers throughout the Dominion, began almost by accident. Students with the long summer vacation before them used to ask their professors for guidance in their reading. Gradually this counsel came to be increasingly important till the question arose, as to whether credit might not be given for such reading provided the student possessed the necessary academic require ments for entering upon a course of university study, followed the University curriculum in his reading, and passed the same examinations as the student attending the classes in Queen's. The idea was not in itself new. London University had shown the Way. But the conditions in Canada made the problem largely new, and the regulations governing it have been modified con siderably as the result of the long years of trial. The system, however, has been of the greatest value to the Dominion. Every where one meets men in high positions in the educational world who received their opportunity through the Extra-mural system.
