Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What began in the 1930's as a quiet nudist camp in rural Indiana became an international phenomenon by the late 1970's. From 1968 thru 1986 Naked City was not only the worlds largest nudist camp according to the Guinness World Book of Records, it was also home of the world famous Miss Nude America pageant. Naked City was run by Dick Drost, a self-made millionaire who built his sex-media empire from the confines of his wheelchair. He was a savvy self-promoter & hustler whose skills rivaled those of P.T. Barnum, Larry Flynt, and the infamous Reverend Jim Jones. Yet despite his incredible fame & wealth he was almost assassinated, kicked out of the state of Indiana for a decade, and died penniless & alone.Much mythology has built up around Drost and Naked City over the years. He was featured in countless newspaper & magazine articles, and even a documentary film but up until now no one has told the whole story about this unique part of 1970's Americana. I have researched every article available, and interviewed numerous witnesses to write a detailed account of this lost piece of history. I also have a personal perspective to tell the story from, as my family attended Naked City during its heyday.

Book excerpt: This richly illustrated volume examines the idiosyncraticphenomenon of social nudism in mid-20th-century Britain, anisland nation fabled for its lack of sunshine and its reservedsocial attitudes.Structured across three interrelated phases, readers firstencounter the movement at its genesis in the 1920s,when nudism was synonymous with vegetarianism, intellectualism and utopianism. That nascent cultureproliferated in the postwar era, with a widening landscapeof amateur clubs and governing organizations alongsidehigh circulation publications and censorship-challengingphotographers. Finally, Annebella Pollen examines themovement's redefinition as naturism, its cultural battles andits struggle to survive amid shifts in sexual liberation in thepermissive 1960s.Unadorned bodies were the central campaigning tool ofBritish naturism's photographic propaganda. They drewattention to the cause and drove publication sales but theyalso attracted regular public opprobrium. Naturism's shiftingvisual culture thus provides a microcosmic view of Britishmoral, legal and aesthetic transformations in a period of rapidsocial change, revealing evolving perspectives on health andsex, gender and ethnicity, pleasure and power.

They never notice the soft clicking noises as radiation detectors kick in and a strange code begins taking over a computer monitor. As a glowing saucer zips past the Voyager, locks itself into orbit around Neptune, rolls over, and then disappears from view, the technicians loudly argue over the rules of the game unaware that aliens are headed toward Earth. Unfortunately, the amphibian-like creatures who reproduce in alarming numbers have made a serious mistake. They have chosen a small town in Iowa as the place to launch their invasion, mistakenly thinking they can attack under a cloak of invisibility. But this rural setting is protected by the Pirates, an elite team of adventurers and foilers of evil plots comprised of the most dangerous creatures on planet Earth young boys. As the alien invaders kidnap one of the pirates and begin to examine him for weaknesses, they have no idea that they have in their possession the girl-hating, chaos-creating nuisance that is the bane of all fourth-grade math teachers in town. It may be the last mistake they'll ever make.

Book Naked At Lunch

Download or read book Naked At Lunch written by Mark Haskell Smith and published by Atlantic Books Ltd. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the great wandering tradition of Bill Bryson, Louis Theroux and Jon Ronson, journalist Mark Haskell Smith strips down the world of social nudism in a hilarious, wildly entertaining and profoundly enlightening book about those who renounce clothing and embrace what lies beneath. Naked at Lunch is one man's cracklingly witty, compellingly odd and oddly life-affirming journey into the subculture of nudism. Celebrated journalist Mark Haskell Smith meets, and indeed joins, those shucking off social conventions by shucking off their clothes - he hikes bareback in the Alps with a naked rambler's society, he buys baguettes in the buff in a French resort and he meets the marginally dressed mayor of a Spanish clothes-optional municipality. But this is not just a book of naked adventures and sun-ripened genitals. It is a study of 20th-century Western cultural and social mores; a record of radical history and politics practised by those made radical by their refusal to get dressed; a heartfelt celebration of the simple joys of being alive; and a full-blooded war cry for reclaiming pride in our bodies and rejecting those who would make us ashamed.
