Book excerpt: Dolly Varden Salvalinus malma in northwest Alaska support vital subsistence fisheries and popular sport fisheries. This study will address a lack of information regarding the diversity of Dolly Varden life histories and the genetic composition of the subsistence harvests in the Noatak River drainage. To address these knowledge gaps this project will 1) use otolith microchemistry to describe life-history variability throughout the drainage and compare lifehistories of present-day spawners and harvests to fish sampled in the early 1980s (DeCicco 1985); and, 2) using mixedstock analysis (MSA) identify the genetic make-up of the harvests as it relates to spawning populations. Otolith samples and genetic material will be collected from the bycatch in the Kotzebue commercial fishery and from the subsistence fisheries in Noatak and Kivalina. Otolith and genetic material will be collected from 9 tributaries of the Noatak River watershed over a 3 year period. Fish will be captured by hook and line, beach seine, and/or gillnets in each of the tributaries. Fish will be sacrificed for otolith collection and have a fin clip removed for genetic analysis. A graduate student at UAF will be responsible for otolith analysis as part of a masters’ thesis and genetic material will be used to determine the stock-of-origin of the harvests.
