Book Life Histories of Indian Insects Vol 5

Download or read book Life Histories of Indian Insects Vol 5 written by C. C. Ghosh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Histories of Indian Insects, Vol. 5: Lepidoptera (Butterflies) The insects, the life-histories of which are described in this volume, are representatives of the principal families of that interesting group of insects, the Butterflies. With the exception of one (delias) the others are pests of more or less economic import ance, occurring on trees and plants either cultivated or grown for the garden. All are of interest and importance in that they are probably the first to attract the attention of the beginner in Ento mology, especially Economic Entomology. Also they occur so constantly and are so common that in all their stages, they ftc quently come under the notice of even the common people, but for want of a proper knowledge and observation ordinary people fail to see the connection between the caterpillar which eats the leaves, the dormant pupa and the butterfly which incessantly flies about under trees, over bushes and plants and not infrequently in houses or even over one's head. The hanging Nymphalid, Papilionid and Pierid pupae are frequently mistaken for fruits by many. For the progress of Economic Entomology in India it is essential that the people should become familiar with the insects and especially with their life-history. The greatest bar to progress in checking injurious insects here is the fact that a mysterious origin is usually assigned to them, simply because the elementary and essential facts of insect transformations are not known to those who suffer from the depre. Book excerpt: A remarkable book about the natural history of insects Did you know?- Dance flies of the family Empididae court their mates by presenting them with silk-wrapped prey. - Some moth-caterpillars will walk only on a path of silk - something humans can certainly aspire for! - Insects were spinning silk 150 million years ago, even if it has been only 5000 years since humans discovered itSilk, perhaps the most ubiquitous luxury item, is produced by one of Earth's grittiest species which has found ways to cope with a changing world. Since life evolved on this planet, there have been five major extinctions, but insects - since their arrival 400 million years ago - have not been amongst them. How have insects survived when species after species is going extinct. In a world faced with cataclysmic environmental changes, there is an increasing amount of interest in knowing the secrets of their survival. In The Weavers, silk forms the central motif of an enquiry into the life of insects, their management practices, their mating rituals and ways of life. Generously sprinkled with oddities and eccentricities, this book is an invitation into their fascinating world.
