Book Life Happens my journey through translation and other stories

Download or read book Life Happens my journey through translation and other stories written by Alison Hughes and published by Alison Hughes. This book was released on 2023-03-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Dear Mr Snozzi, Do you remember me?' So began the letter that was going to take my life in a whole new direction. One month later I arrived in France’s Champagne region with one suitcase, dreadful spoken French and nowhere to live. Fast forward three years and I’m heading for London with one suitcase, fluent French, somewhere to live and a case or two of champagne. In 1990, I was on the move again. This time back to Scotland with several suitcases and a husband. Oh, and in the interim, I had become an in-house translator. After my heady, carefree 20s in the wine and spirits business, life was about to become much more serious with a mortgage, children, health issues, bereavement, the ups and downs of family life and – from 1997 – my own freelance translation business. Life Happens… and freelancers are all too familiar with the challenge of running a business while it does. This is my story of coping admirably, failing miserably and generally keeping my head above water most of the time.

Book Practice Strategies That Cause Musical Improvements

Download or read book Practice Strategies That Cause Musical Improvements written by Stephanie Burns and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you practice frequently and consistently, your musical skills should rightly be improving. If not, this is about HOW you are practicing, and NOT about who you are. There should be NO doubt in your mind that you CAN become a better player. As musicians mature in their playing abilities and begin to perform, many will maintain a genuine desire to continuously improve their playing skills. Indeed, they can see this as a life-long pursuit. But over time it seems their practice no longer leads to the changes they are striving for.Today, research has led to a much better understanding of the ways to practice that will lead to improvement and the ways that will not. Many players simply do not practice in a way that will cause fundamental changes in the skills related to higher-quality playing. This book illuminates the path toward continuous improvement in the development of musical skills for the seasoned player. The creation of this book was aided by the insights of Jack Lee, Stuart Liddell, J. Reid Maxwell & Steven McWhirter.

Playing his bagpipes at events and special occasions for 35 years, he has a collection of interesting and bizarre tales that he shares in Ballad of a Bagpiper, winner of the 2010 Florida Publishers Award.Have you ever thought that bagpipes would be played at a nudist camp? Or in a nudist wedding? What about at a vampire wedding? How about at a funeral where the bagpiper suddenly disappears ... Ballad of a Bagpiper tells of a man who has devoted his life to bringing the sound of bagpipes around the world. Book Gateways to Understanding Music

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gateways to Understanding Music, Second Edition, explores music in all the categories that constitute contemporary musical experience: European classical, popular, jazz, and world music. Covering the oldest forms of human music making to the newest, this chronology presents music from a global rather than a Eurocentric perspective. Each of 60 "gateways" addresses a particular genre, style, or period of music. Every gateway opens with a guided listening example that unlocks a world of music through careful study of its structural elements. How did the piece come to be composed or performed? How did it respond to the social and cultural issues at the time, and what does that music mean today? Students learn to listen to, explain, understand, and ultimately value all the music they encounter in their world. New to this edition is a broader selection of musical examples that reflect the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion advocated by North American universities. Eight gateways have been replaced. A timeline of gateways helps students see the book’s historical narrative at a glance. Features Values orientation—Diverse, equitable, and inclusive approach to music history. All genres of music—Presents all music as worthy of study, including classical, world, popular, and jazz. Global scope within a historical narrative—Begins with small-scale forager societies up to the present, with a shifting focus from global to European to American influences. Recurring themes — Aesthetics, emotion, social life, links to culture, politics, economics, and technology. Modular framework—60 gateways—each with a listening example—allow flexibility to organize chronologically or by the seven themes. Consistent structure—With the same step-by-step format, students learn through repeated practice how to listen and how to think about music. Anthology of scores—For those courses that use the textbook in a music history sequence. Gateways to Understanding Music continues to employ a website to host the audio examples and instructor’s resources.

Book Alastair Campbell Diaries Volume 7

Download or read book Alastair Campbell Diaries Volume 7 written by Alastair Campbell and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caught in the no man's land between being a key figure in Downing Street and the relative anonymity of the world outside politics, Alastair Campbell finds himself being torn in several directions. Having succeeded Tony Blair as Prime Minister, Gordon Brown wants Campbell at his side. Campbell resists, flooding his reservoir of guilt as a general election looms and Brown's indecision and fluctuating moods suggest the Labour administration is seriously threatened by the Tory 'posh boy', David Cameron. Soon Campbell is earning not only praise but big money from motivational speaking and writing novels which darkly reflect the personal mood swings that continue to concern to both him and his family. Serious journalism across platforms old and new puts him back in the public eye and together with live appearances and a love of sport – his enduring love affair with Burnley Football Club still smoulders – sees him board a celebrity merry-go-round that often leaves him far from his comfort zone. With politics constantly tugging his sleeve, he eventually returns to the front line to marshal a party in disarray. The intensity of the months leading up to 6 May 2010 is as dramatic as any screenplay, with Campbell chronicling Brown's struggle to win over a disillusioned nation and then his dignified departure from the main stage. For Campbell, another chapter closes. So what next?
