Book excerpt: The reflexive turn in qualitative research has transformed the process of doing life history research. No longer are research subjects examined through the lens of the all-knowing but supposedly invisible researcher. As Ardra Cole and Gary Knowles point out in this fresh introduction to conducting life history research, the process is now one of mutuality, empathy, sensitivity and caring. The authors carry the novice researcher through the steps of conducting life history research-from conceptualizing the project to the various means of presenting results-with an eye toward understanding the complex relationship between participant and researcher and how that shapes the project. In addition to examples from their own research, Cole and Knowles bring in the work of a dozen novice researchers who explain the challenges they faced in developing their own life history projects in a wide variety of settings. Well written, interesting, and pedagogically sound, Lives in Context is the ideal text for teaching life history research to students and an important reference for the bookshelf of all qualitative researchers.

Book Privacy in Context

    Book Details:
  • Author : Helen Nissenbaum
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2009-11-24
  • ISBN : 0804772894
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Privacy in Context written by Helen Nissenbaum and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privacy is one of the most urgent issues associated with information technology and digital media. This book claims that what people really care about when they complain and protest that privacy has been violated is not the act of sharing information itself—most people understand that this is crucial to social life —but the inappropriate, improper sharing of information. Arguing that privacy concerns should not be limited solely to concern about control over personal information, Helen Nissenbaum counters that information ought to be distributed and protected according to norms governing distinct social contexts—whether it be workplace, health care, schools, or among family and friends. She warns that basic distinctions between public and private, informing many current privacy policies, in fact obscure more than they clarify. In truth, contemporary information systems should alarm us only when they function without regard for social norms and values, and thereby weaken the fabric of social life.

Book The Life Course in Context

Download or read book The Life Course in Context written by Kyong Hee Chee and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Life Course in Context introduces undergraduate and graduate students to the main themes and concepts of the life course perspective. It shows how these concepts are applied to the analysis of life course events and provides insight into the importance of considering cultural and historical context when examining the life course. The studies in the collection have been grouped into four sections. Section one introduces the life course perspective as a dynamic theoretical approach and illustrates how it can be applied to studying the multiple connections between neighborhoods and individuals' health. Section two incorporates a multicultural perspective to shed light on the early years of the life course. In section three students gain a deeper understanding of family and employment patterns and expectations during adulthood, and in Section four the studies explore aging and dying as they are viewed within a cultural context. The Life Course in Context is well suited to courses that address social issues related to life course transitions. It is also a useful supplement to gerontology courses that examine aging from a life course perspective. Kyong Hee Chee holds a Ph.D in sociology from Iowa State University. She is an associate professor of sociology at Texas State University, where she participated in the creation of the university's new master's of science program in dementia and aging studies, which is the first of its kind in the United States. Her research interests include aging and the life course and community development. Her work has been published in The Gerontologist, the International Journal of Sociology of the Family, and Sociological Spectrum. In 2008 the Gerontological Society of America awarded her its Civic Engagement in an Older America Project Senior Scholar Award."

Book The Context of Holiness Psychological and Spiritual Reflections on the Life of St Th r se of Lisieux

Download or read book The Context of Holiness Psychological and Spiritual Reflections on the Life of St Th r se of Lisieux written by Marc Foley and published by ICS Publications. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores both the psychological and spiritual dimensions of the life of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. The basic premise of this book is that the spiritual life is not an encapsulated sphere, cloistered from the realities of our human existence. Rather it is our response to God within the physical, psychological, social and emotional dimensions of life. St. Thérèse did not grow in holiness apart from the human condition. Like all of us, she was emotionally scarred by the fragileness of life. She was deeply wounded by the death of her mother at the age of four, bedridden as the result of a neurotic episode when she was ten, struggled with debilitating scruples most of her life, and suffered an agonizing dark night of faith. St. Thérèse was no plaster statue saint. Her life was a real life. As it unfolds before us on the pages of Story of a Soul, we see a pilgrim soul who made her way home to God through many raging storms and dark nights. The specific nature of Thérèse's trials may differ from our own, but psychological and emotional suffering are our common lot. For example, we may not have know the pain of our mother dying when we were four, but most of us have know the pain of the loss of a loved one. The sufferings that we share with Thérèse are universal - physical pain, anxiety, anger, sadness, depression, loneliness, doubts of faith, to name a few. These sufferings make doing the will of God difficult, but they are the context of our choices. They are the context of holiness.

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Shoki Coe written by Jonah Chang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shoki Coe (1914-1988) was a pastor of the Taiwan Presbyterian Church who grew up in Japanese occupied Taiwan. He went on to become a champion of Taiwanese freedom, a pioneer of Asian theology, and an advocate of Christianity in the global south. This is his story, well researched and engagingly written by Jonah Chang. Coe was educated under Japanese rule and went to Cambridge for his ministerial education. He was involved in the ecumenical movement from the early 1950s, became a seminary president in Taiwan, and championed a contextual approach to ministry and mission. He served from 1965 to 1979 with the Theological Education Fund, where his deep influence helped to change the paradigm for theology and ministry internationally. Coe's story documents not only the growth and maturity of the worldwide ecumenical movement and the navigation of East-West and North-South tensions, but also the birth and legitimation of a distinctly contextual approach to world Christianity. *** "One of the most significant contributions of this book is that it captures the great extent to which Coe's local and international commitment as a theological educator was based on his strong sense of "m7-goan7," a Taiwanese Hoklo expression signifying "a sense of what is totally unacceptable." - The Ecumenist, Vol. 50, No. 4, Fall 2013

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing widespread discontent with contemporary schooling, Roland Tharp and Ronald Gallimore develop a unified theory of education and offer a prescription: the reconstitution of schools as 'educating societies'. Drawing on studies from the family nursery through the university seminar, and on their own successful experiences with thousands of students over two decades, their theory is firmly based in a culture-sensitive devellopmental psychology but seeks to integrate all the recent work in the Vygotskian tradition with basic concepts in cognitive science, anthropology, and sociolinguistics. One of the authors' primary resources is the Kamehameha Elementary Education Program (KEEP), generally regarded as the world's outstanding research and development program for elementary schooling.

Book Within the Context of No Context

Download or read book Within the Context of No Context written by George W. S. Trow and published by Atlantic Monthly Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written originally for a special issue of The New Yorker and reissued here with a new forward by the author, Within the Context of No Context is George W. S. Trow's brilliant exposition on the state of American culture and twentieth-century life. Published to widespread acclaim, Within the Context of No Context became an immediate classic and is, to this day, a favorite work of writers and critics alike. Both a chilling commentary on the times in which it was written and an eerie premonition of the future, Trow's work locates and traces, describes and analyzes the components of change in contemporary America -- a culture increasingly determined by the shallow worlds of consumer products, daytime television, and celebrity heroes. "This elegant little book is essential reading for anyone interested in the demise, the terminal silliness, of our culture." -- John Irving, The New York Times Book Review; "In this elegant, poignant essay, written with the grace of a master stylist, George Trow articulates the accelerated impermanence of American culture with a precision that is both flaunting and devastating." -- Rudy Wurlitrer; "Within the Context of No Context is a masterpiece of the century that belongs on a shelf next to Theodore Adorno's Minima Moralia and Guy Debord's The Society of the Spectacle." -- Michael Tolkin; "Within the Context of No Context may appear to be a book of the mind, for it is suffused with such a keen intelligence, but it is actually a book of the heart -- passionate, brave, and stirring." -- Sue Halpern.

Book Rethinking Education for Sustainable Development in a Local Community Context

Download or read book Rethinking Education for Sustainable Development in a Local Community Context written by Fumiko Noguchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the gap between Education for Sustainable Development and community development and examines the contributions of critical environmental education as a theoretical framework to the policy, research, and practice of Education for Sustainable Development. The book investigates what Education for Sustainable Development really means when it happens from the perspectives of a marginalized individual at the very bottom of society in a local community, where there is no such ‘educational’ institution, no policy or no curriculum to support the effort, but there is the necessity of learning and empowerment for changing the situation. In particular, drawing on the experience of the indigenous Ainu fisherman, it critically examines the theoretical foundation of Education for Sustainable Development, critical environmental education, investigating methodologically and epistemologically the relevance and efficacy of critical environmental education to socially critical approaches to Education for Sustainable Development in a community development context. And this investigation leads to develop a praxis framework for socially critical Education for Sustainable Development in a community development context so that both fields would be mutually supportive to strengthen the practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As biblical hermeneutics moves increasingly toward the inclusion of vernacular approaches to the text--understandings of the Bible based on culture, context, and human experience--many communities of faith around the world are contributing their voices to the conversation of global Christianity. This volume explores reading methods and text interpretations of believers in South Africa, the Caribbean, Spain, the Netherlands, the United States, India, Kenya, Fiji, Japan, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Nigeria--revealing the ways various faith communities read the Bible contextually. Essays in this volume also illustrate the impact of the biblical text in people's lives--on their understandings of oppression, identity, the plight of refugees, decline and loss, the relationship between church and society, imperialism, homelessness, restorative justice, bodily experiences of the Holy Spirit, and time and the future. Together, these writings provide an in-depth sense of how global Christians read the Bible through the lens of their own tradition or culture, as well as how the Bible informs all aspects of their lives as they read the world biblically.
