Download or read book Beyond Redemption written by Carole Emberton and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the months after the end of the Civil War, there was one word on everyone’s lips: redemption. From the fiery language of Radical Republicans calling for a reconstruction of the former Confederacy to the petitions of those individuals who had worked the land as slaves to the white supremacists who would bring an end to Reconstruction in the late 1870s, this crucial concept informed the ways in which many people—both black and white, northerner and southerner—imagined the transformation of the American South. Beyond Redemption explores how the violence of a protracted civil war shaped the meaning of freedom and citizenship in the new South. Here, Carole Emberton traces the competing meanings that redemption held for Americans as they tried to come to terms with the war and the changing social landscape. While some imagined redemption from the brutality of slavery and war, others—like the infamous Ku Klux Klan—sought political and racial redemption for their losses through violence. Beyond Redemption merges studies of race and American manhood with an analysis of post-Civil War American politics to offer unconventional and challenging insight into the violence of Reconstruction.

Download or read book Beyond Orientalism written by Eli Franco and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilhelm Halbfass, philosopher and Indologist, is a committed participant in the dialogue between India and Europe, whose reflections on the Indian tradition and its Western perception are accompanied by reflection on and critical examination of the Western tradition. In this innovative combination of Indological research and philosophical-hermeneutical research in the history of ideas, he demonstrates a purpose more ambitious and a scope wider than Edward Said's who constructed the Western study of the so-called Orient as an attempt to deprive it of its identity and sovereignty, and who perceived the pursuit of Oriental Studies in Western universities to be an extension of a fundamentally political will to power and domination. Without denying the domination of the dialogue between India and Europe by the West, Halbfass goes beyond that to show a different way of approaching Indian thought; he strives to establish the presuppositions and prerequisites that would make a true dialogue and mutual understanding between Indian and Western intellectual cultures possible. The papers in the present volume originate from twenty-three scholars of Indology, philosophy, religious studies, comparative theology, classics, folkloristics and political theory, working in eleven countries spread over three continents. They address central issues of Halbfass' work; his critical responses to them commence with an extensive essay in which he assesses in a masterly manner the state of Indian studies almost twenty years after the publication of Said's Orientalismz.

Book excerpt: What would compel a successful surgeon to give up his practice in affluent Brentwood, Tennessee, to move to Haiti and serve the poorest of the poor? The catastrophic earthquake that devasted Haiti in 2010 was the motivation that Dr. David Vanderpool needed to completely change his life to follow the call of Jesus. For several years, he and his wife, Laurie, had been asking each other a daily question: What did you do yesterday that required faith? God’s call to Dr. David Vanderpool’s was so powerful that he organized medical and logistical relief to help the hundreds of thousands of desperate Haitians?suffering people with no water, food, or shelter, much less medical care. But it didn’t stop there. The Vanderpools sold everything—surgical practice, home, belongings—to bring much-needed medical care to the people of Haiti. They established a nonprofit, LiveBeyond, to empower the impoverished. Today, its work continues with basic needs such as nutrition and water, in addition to health care, education, and agricultural assistance. The goal: achieve sustainable communities, beginning with the home base of Thomazeau, Haiti. The inspirational true stories of LiveBeyond’s work in Haiti will lead you to ask yourself, What did I do yesterday that required faith? And maybe do something about it.

Book The Ups and Downs of Aging Beyond Seventy Years

Download or read book The Ups and Downs of Aging Beyond Seventy Years written by Viola B. Mecke Ph.D. ABPP and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life grows ever more complex as each choice is shadowed by the loss of future time. Hope, a positive attitude, becomes mellowed in accepting the nearing of the end. Two psychological periods emerge: the first is described as the Summing-Up Period and the second as the Encore Phase in life. The Summing-Up Period of life brings a driving force to attain a congruence of forces within oneself, complete unfinished personal tasks and fulfill unsatisfied experiences, and compassion, a wish to give others, now encountering once-familiar problems, with compassion and understanding. The Encore stage of life may be more physically passive, but it is a time of sayonara, of saying goodbye with gratitude and forgiveness for all; of serene-ness, an acceptance of all life has given, even as sorrows increase, and of soliloquys, a review of life. All are diffused with gratitude and solace for others.

Book Television Beyond and Across the Iron Curtain

Download or read book Television Beyond and Across the Iron Curtain written by Kirsten Bönker and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-1950s onwards, the rise of television as a mass medium took place in many East and West European countries. As the most influential mass medium of the Cold War, television triggered new practices of consumption and media production, and of communication and exchange on both sides of the Iron Curtain. This volume leans on the long-neglected fact that, even during the Cold War era, television could easily become a cross-border matter. As such, it brings together transnational perspectives on convergence zones, observations, collaborations, circulations and interdependencies between Eastern and Western television. In particular, the authors provide empirical ground to include socialist television within a European and global media history. Historians and media, cultural and literary scholars take interdisciplinary perspectives to focus on structures, actors, flow, contents or the reception of cross-border television. Their contributions cover Albania, the CSSR, the GDR, Russia and the Soviet Union, Serbia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia, thus complementing Western-dominated perspectives on Cold War mass media with a specific focus on the spaces and actors of East European communication. Last but not least, the volume takes a long-term perspective crossing the fall of the Iron Curtain, as many trends of the post-socialist period are linked to, or pick up, socialist traditions.

Book Wagner Beyond Good and Evil

Download or read book Wagner Beyond Good and Evil written by John Deathridge and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2008-07-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection provides us with that rarest of objects: a genuinely new book on Wagner. Virtually every page offers fresh perspectives, some of them mined from the most unlikely of sources; indeed, the sheer eclecticism of the book, its willingness to range widely and irreverently through both popular and elite culture, is one of its greatest strengths."—Roger Parker, author of Remaking the Song: Operatic Visions and Revisions from Handel to Berio "John Deathridge is one of the most authoritative, widely-regarded Wagner scholars around in any language. Few can match his command of scholarship and primary sources, and no one else knows how to put them to such clever, provocative uses. In addition, Deathridge enjoys an impressive range of critical, historical, and literary reference. The writing is consistently lively and engaging. The collection will provide a welcome change of diet for those tired of the usual Wagnerian fare. This is a welcome contribution, indeed."—Thomas Grey, author of Wagner's Musical Prose: Texts and Contexts
