As the hut population diminished, occasions for special services were more rare, and though the closing services at each of the chapels were days to be remembered, they cannot well be called red letter days. At each chapel special closing services were held, though there were but few of the railway folk left to attend. A writer in the "Home Mission Field of the Church of England," the organ of the Additional Curates' Society which has so liberally furthered the objects of the Mission, after giving a short history of the work and describing the tunnel service, says--and his words shall conclude this chapter--"With this scene, too, might fitly end our brief sketch of this most interesting Mission; but perhaps a word or two should be added as to results. The question is often asked, when such work is described, 'What have been the results ' Here, at any rate, they have been manifest. Evil livers have been reclaimed--men almost heathen brought to worship God--the young cared for and saved from evil influences. Enough, indeed, has been achieved to make those feel who have laboured here... that if they have sown the good seed with tears and painfulness, they shall doubtless behold the harvest-sheaves with joy and thankfulness. But it is a grave error to measure such works with results--the work is not man's but God's, and its real fruits are known to Him alone. "This much is clear, that we have a plain and positive duty to discharge towards this much-neglected class of our fellow-countrymen.
