And yonder - outside the gates - between the trees, rises stately and impressive, the abbey Saint-Germain des Pres, where the kindly abbot, William Briconnet, sways his sceptre. Like a fortress the abbey is surrounded by deep moats to prevent surprise from any sudden and unexpected attack; and a sweet resting- place it affords to the man, who worn out by the moil and toil of the great city, wishes here to end his days in tranquillity and peace. There in the great hall with its costly library, sits a solitary man. The friendship of Briconnet brought him to the place. And on the parchment, that is lying before him on the massive writing-table, he writes: "Anno 1509." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John Calvin The history of the life of Calvin, and of the times in which he lived, should be familiar to every protestant, and especially to those who venerate the man, and admire the theological system which he so ably defended. The odium which some would unjustly cast upon his name and memory, should excite us to cherish both with increased attachment. The pious and candid among his cotemporaries, and among his immediate successors in life, appreciated his worth, and delighted to honour him. The good loved him - the wicked hated, because they feared him. He was the Hercules of the Reformation, a distinguished and commanding leader among the hosts of the Lord, a brilliant ornament of his age, and of the church of Christ. Violent opposition to religious opinions, is easily transferred to those who hold them, or are distinguished by an able defence of them. So it has fared with Calvin, and, for the most part, with those who are called by his name; at whose charge the weightiest accusations are not unfrequently laid by those who are at war with the doctrinal sentiments, and therefore, the character of this great Reformer. But the ablest defence which either can receive, is a fair exposition of both. It has therefore been thought desirable to furnish such an exposition, in a form, and at a price, suited to the habits and the means of all. Calvin's Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans has just been published with this view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of John Calvin, Vol. 2 of 2: The Great Reformer Now, the greater the danger on all sides, the more must we strive to be ready to afford help, especially since they exhibit so noble an example of firmness; and we should deserve, did we forsake them, to be overwhelmed with shame. Add to this, that the present matter does not concern them alone, for either the way will be opened by their persecution to the rage of the wicked against the churches, in all parts of the kingdom, or the Gospel will by this means be everywhere diffused. What re mains therefore for us but to employ all our strength, lest our pious brethren should perish through our sloth, and the door be long closed to Christ? I have desired to say this to you, in order that, should they seek refuge with you, your government might be prepared to render them assistance. One of two things must be done for them; that is, we must either induce the king to exercise his promised good-will towards them, or soften his anger, should it have been excited to their prejudice. Book The Life and Times of John Calvin Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Life and Times of John Calvin Vol 1 of 2 written by Paul Henry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of John Calvin, Vol. 1 of 2: The Great Reformer Twenty years, we understand, intervened between the commencement and the completion of this work. No slight variety of style has been the consequence. The Author generally writes with much vigor, and is often eloquent; but his style is occasionally painfully harsh, abrupt, and perplexed. Hence the Translator has had to choose between the attempt to soften the original, at the hazard of somewhat modifying the meaning of the Author, or following the current of his style, rough as it may be, and thus leaving the matter to be settled between the reader and the original writer. But anxious as he has been honestly to preserve the sharpest features of the original, the Translator may be permitted, he trusts, to guard himself against the chance of misrepresentation as to his own views or opinions. He begs then that it may be understood, that it is chiefly on account of its historical value that he has desired to make this work known to English readers. He has a most sincere respect for the piety and eminent talents of the author; but neither his regard for Dr. Henry, nor his profound admiration of Calvin, in the general features of his char acter and sublime zeal, has altered his views on the sub jcet to which he has here more especial cause to refer. Dr. Henry has defended Calvin, in the case of Servetus, with admirable ability but the Translator believes still, as he has ever believed, that when men enjoy so large a meas ure of light and wisdom as Calvin possessed, they cannot be justified, if guilty of persecution, because they lived in times when wicked and vulgar minds warred against the rights of human conscience. If Calvin had prayed to be set free from the bondage which made him a persecutor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Calvin: His Life, Letters, and Work Briconnet had been appointed bishop, and being a man of some importance he believed he could accomplish something in his diocese.1 His father had been first minister under Charles VIII, and after the death of his wife, had entered the Church and become in succession Bishop of St. Malo, Arch bishop Of Rheims, and cardinal. His son Guillaume was first Archdeacon of Rheims and Avignon, then Bishop of Lodeve, then Abbot of St. Germain des Pres, which his father resigned in his favour. He had also acted as ambassador-extraordinary to Rome. As the curates under his jurisdiction in Meaux seldom resided in their parishes and were ignorant and vicious he divided the diocese into thirty-two sections and provided each with a preacher. Among those whom he called into action were Le Fevre, Farel, Vatable, Roussel, and others. He also went to the pulpit and preached himself. A preach ing bishop was a rarity in these days, and one who preached what looked like Lutheran doctrine was a still greater rarity, so the multitude ocked to hear him. Further, at his own expense, he published those passages from the gospels and epistles which were used in the services of the Church, and he circulated them. Every one began to read them. A change Speedily appeared. People began to leave off pray ing to the Virgin and the saints, and confined their worship to Christ alone. Blasphemy gave place to Bible study, and riotous behaviour was replaced by decorum. So great was the excitement which the movement set up that the Romish authorities became alarmed and took action. Book History of the Reformation in Europe Vol 1

Download or read book History of the Reformation in Europe Vol 1 written by J. H. Merle D'aubigne and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation in Europe, Vol. 1: In the Time of Calvin At the conclusion of the preface to the first volume of the History of the Reformation, the author wrote, 'This work will consist of four volumes, or at the most five, which will appear successively.' These five volumes have appeared. In them are described the heroic times of Luther, and the effects produced in Germany and other countries by the characteristic doctrine of that reformer - justification by faith. They present a picture of that great epoch which contained in the germ the revival of Christianity in the last three centuries. The author has thus completed the task he had assigned himself; but there still remained another. The times of Luther were followed by those of Calvin. He, like his great predecessor, undertook to search the Scriptures, and in them he found the same truth and the same life; but a different character distinguishes his work. The renovation of the individual, of the Church, and of the human race, is his theme. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
